WHERE THEY USE BAKELITE LAMINATED

This special tm n -co il induction heater was b u ilt by Birlec L td . for ann ealin g th e rim s o f deep pressings. Special design difficulties were m et because o f the exceptional n u m b er of am pere turns in the coils. These coils, connected in series, were enclosed in an annular box b u ilt o f B A K E L l T E L am inated and filled w ith an in su latin g com p o u n d . T he voltage on each coil is approxim ately 2,500 and th e frequency about 300 kc/s per second, cooling being supplied by w ater circulated in the copper tubes w hich form the coil conductors. B a k e l i t e L am inated was chosen because it was able not only to play its part in solving th e difficult insulation problem but to offer effective heat resistance w hen exposed to the tem perature of the pressings.

ran an underground movement in London in the ’Eighties?

Im possible to keep that dark, for this electrifying event— putting one o f the first gearless locom otives on L ondon’s tube railways— was the work o f the man w ho spread electric light throughout the w o r ld : C olonel Crompton. The achievements o f this great pioneer ran non-stop from lighting royal palaces and opera houses to supplying safety equipm ent in mines and power installations at such remote spots as Lhasa and Darjeeling. It was C olonel Crompton too, who first introduced house-to-house electric lighting in England. Today his

work is continued in the great Crompton Parkinson organiza

tion, w hose products include Crompton Lamps and Lighting Equipment and whose lighting engineers are ready always to apply their specialised knowledge to every kind o f lighting problem.

What makes the World go Round ?

R e s e a rc h w o r k e r s a r e liv in g question marks. Their daily bread consists of how, why, where—of

“ifs and ans” . At the BTH Labor

atories they have a full meal every day.

With so many enquiring minds at work, Nature has a hard job to hide her secrets, and it is scarcely sur

prising that the BTH team of research workers is always coming forward with new techniques, im

proved methods and every now and then, a brand new discovery that makes electrical history.

(ife i

^ L A M P S

But although the first stage in all scientific advancement is accom

plished by “taking thought”, there is a great deal of hard work to follow, with many difficulties and disappointments to overcome before success is finally achieved.

At BTH no effort is spared, no trouble considered too great, in order to carry an idea through to its conclusion. This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why BTH re

search has accomplished so much in the past, and will accomplish more in the future.
