The know ledge of th e process of soil ag gregate fo rm atio n is an im p o r
ta n t prob lem in soil tillage. The soil aggregates are the chief lin k in th e
s tru c tu re of an arab le soil an d m ay decide on soil fe rtility . T h eir com po
n e n ts a re little kn ow n as y e t (in the q u a lita tiv e as w ell as the q u a n tita
tive sense).
The c o n stitu tio n of soil aggreg ates in th e ir se p ara te fractio n s is best
in v estig a ted in th in m icroscopic slides. In such slides th e n a tu ra l agg re
gate s tru c tu re m ay be observed, th e k in d of skeleton d e te rm in e d to g eth e r
w ith cem ent binding them , as w ell as th e porosity, th e kind and size of
pores.
This p ap er brin gs only some resu lts of in v estig atio n s on lig ht an d
d ark -co lo u red soil aggreg ates (in th e 2— 3 and 3— 4 m m fraction).
THE M A TE R IA L A N D R E SU L T S
The in v estig ated aggregates w ere tak e n fro m th e hum ic horizon of
a m o u n tain acid bro w n soil, fo rm ed on F ly sch sandsto ne and clay shale,
u n d e r g reen lan d . Its m echan ical com position corresponds to fine sandy
m edium loam. The A horizon is 28 cm thick, grey-coloured, acid. The
profile is as follow s: A 0— A x— (B)— C.
The to ta l co n ten t of ag gregates in th e sam ple w as 4.6% fo r th e
2— 3 m m fractio n , 3.4% for th e 3— 4 m m one. In th e fo rm er fractio n
38.0% w ere lig h t-co lo u red aggreg ates an d 62.0% d a rk ones; th e la tte r
fractio n con tained 29.6*%' lig h t aggreg ates an d 70.4% d a rk ones.

2. The course of th e su m m ation curves show s cle a rly th a t th e g rain size
is sm a lle r in th e lig h t aggreg ates th a n in th e d a rk ones. In th e d a rk
aggreg ates th e skeleton g rain size a tta in s 382.5 m icrons (fraction 2— 3 mm);
fo r fraction 3— 4 m m th e larg e st g rains m easu re 262.5 m icrons. In oth er
ara b le bro w n soils have such exam ples of a coarser g rain size also been
observed in th e ir d a rk ag gregates (also in o th er fractions).

in v estig a ted fractio n s show sm aller pores, w hich m ay cause m ore a n a
erobic conditions and fu rth e r th e fo rm atio n of h u m u s w hich gives th e
d a rk e r colour. The m in e ral com position of th e aggregate skeleton varies;
how ever, in gen eral, th e co n ten t of q u a rtz an d chalcedony (passive or b a r
re n m inerals) is th e larg est in a ll aggregates, orthoclase tak in g th e second
place, follow ed by m uscovite and others. A considerable co n ten t of felspars
an d m uscovite (19— 46% of th e m in e ral skeleton) m ay becom e a p o te n tia l
source of p o tassiu m and calcium fo r th e plan ts.

The m olar ratio s S i 0 2:R203 an d S i 0 2:Fe20 3 are sm aller in d a rk aggregates,

w ard s fun n el-w ise, w hile th e closed spaces are u su ally of a longish or
oval shape.
D a r k a g g r e g a t e s , 2— 3 m m d i a m e t e r . The skeleton grains
are sm all or m edium -sized. L arge g rains single, th e sm all ones m ore
aggregated. Some g rain s cleaved, fra c tu re d , soiled by isotropic organic
substance. The grain s are an g u lar, slig h tly ro un ded , also su b an g u lar. In
some aggreg ates only some of th e a n g u la r skeleton grains are stu ck into
a clay -h u m u s substance. The cem ent is lig h t-b ro w n , its colour u n ifo rm
in m ost aggregates; th e re occur d a rk brow n b lu rs and sm all fra g m en ts
of p la n t rests in vary in g stages of decom position, d a rk -b ro w n or black,
q u ite isotropic. The cem ent is m o stly com pact or porous, in th e m ore dense
skeleto n g rain con cen tratio n s also contacting. Som etim es it form s a ske
leto n-less aggregation. The con tactin g cem ent d istin c tly dense, stro n g ly
a d h erin g to th e skeleton grains. The w hole m ass of th e cem ent is je lly -
-like (sm all com pact clews). The pores in some aggregates are c h an n el-
-like, in some o th ers — closed, v a ry in g in size an d shape. The chann els

G E N ER A L C O N C LU SIO N S
1. T he in v estig a ted soil aggregates in th e 2-3 an d 3-4 m m fractio n s
d iffe r fro m one a n o th e r by th e ir m icrom orphology an d co n stitu tio n al
elem ents. The d a rk and lig h t-co lo u red aggreg ates d iffe r m ore b etw een
th e m th a n those of d iffe re n t size.
2. The m in eral com position of th e sk eleton in d a rk an d lig ht ag
g reg ates d iffers also. The skeleton also contains larg e fra g m en ts of
slig h tly decom posed p la n t rests w ith visible cell s tru c tu re . T here is no
rela tio n b etw een aggreg ate colour an d th e p ro p ortion of “b a rre n ” m in e
ra ls (quartz, chalcedony).
3. The average d egree of ro u n d n ess of th e skeleton g rains is less in
the d a rk aggregates th a n in th e lig h t ones. The d a rk aggregates contain
m ore a n g u la r skeleton grains, and less su b a n g u la r o r slig h tly ro u n d ed
ones.
4. The d ifferen ces in chem ical com position occur b etw een d a rk and
light aggregates, b u t n o t b etw een v arious ag gregate fractions. T he d a rk
aggreg ates con tain less H C l-soluble S i 0 2 an d A120 3, b u t m ore F e 20 3 and
som ew hat m ore CaO th a n th e lig ht ones.
5. T he d a rk aggregates co ntain m ore organic sub stance and h um us,
w hich — to g eth e r w ith fe rric h y d ro x id e — causes th e ir d a rk e r colour.

Основным элем ентом структуры (строения) паш ни и почвы являю тся почвенны е агрегаты. Им п р и н адл еж и т дом инирую щ ая роль в ф орм ировани и ф и зи ч еск и х свойств почвы и в х о д е м и к роби ологическ их процессов. И зуч ен и е строения п очв ен н ы х агрегатов удобн ее проводить на тон к и х ш л и ф а х . Н а т а к и х ш л и ф а х в о зм ож н о п роследить и х естеств ен н ое строение т.е. установить род скелета, вещ еств скл еи в аю щ и х этот скелет и величины свободн ы х п р о странств. В данной статье приведены только некоторы е результаты для ф рак ц и й диаметром 2— 3 и 3—4 мм со светлой и темной окраской агрегатов. 2. М икроскопное описан ие тонких агрегатны х ш л и ф ов вы явило, что они разли чн ы т а к ж е по м икром орф ологи и и элем ентам строения. 5. В м икроскопном обследовани и установлены разн и ц ы в м инеральном составе, пористости и в степени обтачивания м инерального скелета агрегатов со светлой, и темной окраской (табл. 2). 6. Х им ически й со,став пок азы вает т а к ж е некоторы е р азл и ч и я в с о д е р ж а нии отдельн ы х х и м и ч еск и х элем ентов м е ж д у св е т л о - и тем ноокраш енны м и агрегатам и а особенно в со д ер ж а н и и органического вещ ества. Т ем ны е агрегаты со д ер ж а т отчетливо больш е органического вещ ества, чем светлы е. Агрегаты светлой окраски отличаю тся больш им сод ер ж ан и ем растворимого крем незем а, алю миния и магния, а меньш им — кальция и ж е л е з а (таб. 3).
