A STU DY O F GRAIN SIZE D ISTR IB U TIO N O F CLAY M IN ERA LS IN SO ILS AND CLAYS

C om parison of size of c ry sta ls of m in erals form ed in su p ergene con d itions show s th a t some of th e m can occur in th e fo rm of sev eral m ete r larg e c ry sta ls (gypsum ) w h ereas th e o th er in th e fo rm of sm all grains, seldom a tta in in g a size of sev eral c en tim eters (barite, an h y d rite). G rains of m an y clay m in e rals do n o t exceed se v era l m icrons (halloysite) or even fractio n s of a m icron (m ontm orillonite).
T he c ry sta l size is often d e te rm in e d by th e conditions of c ry sta lliz a tion. It is kn o w n h ow ever th a t even u n d e r th e m ost fav o rab le conditions
c e rta in m in erals cry stallize solely in th e fo rm of sm all grains, w h ereas th e o th er a tta in re a d ily larg e sizes. E se n tia lly m in e rals of sim ple chem i cal com position a n d sim ple s tru c tu re are capable of fo rm ing larg e c ry sta l in d iv idu als. M inerals of com plex s tru c tu re involving b o th geo m e try an d a n u m b e r of v ario u s ions co n tain ed in it, form in th e condi tions of n o rm a l te m p e ra tu re a n d p ressu re c ry sta ls of m icroscopic size. The aim of th e p re se n t stu d ies w as to d ete rm in e th e ran g e s of g rain size in w h ich th e m ost im p o rta n t m in e rals occur in soils a n d clays. The g rain com position w as d e te rm in e d for 100 sam ples of soils fo rm ed on g ra n ites a n d b asalts, loesses, illite, illite -m o n tm o rillo n ite an d k ao lin ite clays a n d kaolines. The g rain size w as m e a s u re d 1 in th e ran g e 60— 0.1 [x. In th e
ran g e 60— 2 th e g rain size w as d e te rm in e d w ith th e help of th e
sed im en tatio n balan ce and in th e ran g e 2— 0.1 ц. w ith S cherples u ltr a centrifuge. The sam ples w ere p u rifie d fro m am orphous alu m in u m an d silicon h y d ro x id e s w hich acted as b in d in g ag ent in grains, by boiling th em in 0.5 N N aO H [1]. In th e case of high co n ten t of F e 20 3 it w as rem oved w ith sodium d ith io n ate [2]. T he p u rifie d sam ples w ere d isp e rs ed sh ak ing m echan ically th e ir w a te r suspensions w ith addition of sodium
p y ro p h o sp h ate as a dispersin g agent. T he sam ples w ere divided into
fractio n s of th e ran ge: 60— 20 20— 2 ц, 2— 0.2 0.2— 0.8 м. and < 0.08 u
or 60— 16 [X, 16— 4 |я, 4— 1 ix, 1— 0.5 m-, 0.5— 0.1 \i and < 0.1 \x. The m in eral com position of above fra c tio n s w as d e te rm in e d by X -ra y analysis and DTA. T hese stu d ies allow ed to estab lish th e d istrib u tio n of clay m in erals in th e given g rain ranges.
As th e re su lts of th ese stu d ies th e follow ing reg u la ritie s have been observed: q u a rtz occurs m ain ly in th e fra c tio n s h ig h er th a n 10 \i. Below 10 jx its c o n ten t ra p id ly decreases w ith th e decrease in th e g rain size. Below 0.5 jX q u a rtz is p ra c tic a lly n o t observed. In the clayey rocks red e p o sited, a fin e q u a rtz (below 20 м) has g rain s of sh a rp edges w h ereas th e la rg e r g rain s are ro u nded. T he n u m b er ro u n d ed of g rains is o ften the h ig h er th e la rg e r is th e ir d iam eter. K ao lin ite T is observed m ain ly in th e
ran g e 0.5— 20 Its m ost c h a ra c te ristic ra n g e is b etw een 1— 10 jn, how ev er
in some special cases th e p lates of k ao lin ite of 1 m m d iam e te r (or even higher) are found. K ao lin ite pM is found below 1 м. T he co n te n t of th is m in e ral in th e fra c tio n s sm a lle r th e n 0.1 u is g e n e ra lly low, th u s th is v alu e can be ta k e n as th e low er lim it of its g rain size. In som e clays occurence of dickite w as observed 1. It is fo un d ex clusively in th e fra c tio ns h ig h er th a n 1 \i. Illite is fo u n d m ain ly in th e ran g e 1— 0.1 |я sim ila rly lik e k ao lin ite pM. Below 0.1 w its co n te n t d ecreases fast. In th e fractio n s h ig h er th a n 1 \i one find s p lates of m ica chan ged to a d iffe re n t e x te n t by w eath erin g . M ost fre q u e n tly it is m uscovite k ao lin itized in various degrees. B iotite on th e o th er h a n d u nd ergoes n o rm a lly a process of ch loritizatio n. M ontm orillo nite is co n c en tra te d in th e fra c tio n fin e r th a n 0.2 ix. It is as a ru le d io cta h ed ra l m o n tm o rillo n ite from th e series b eid ell- eite — n o n tro n ite. In som e cases m o n tm o rillo n ite is observed in th e co ar ser fractio n s of g rains la rg e r even th a n 1 м. U su ally th is is m o n tm o rillo n ite bound m ech an ically w ith th e su rface of g rain s of o th er m in erals, not rem oved by w ash ing in th e p re p a ra tio n of a sam ple, or aggreg ates of m o n tm o rillo n ite p lates, w hich could no t be b ro k en in to in d iv id u al grains. In some sam ples feld sp a r w as observed. It w as fo un d in th e fractio n s larg e r th a n 2 |bt, an d its co n te n t in creased w ith th e in crease in th e g rain size.
T he g rain size ran g es in w h ich p a rtic u la r m in e rals occur, are show n sch em atically in Fig. 1. T hey a p p eared to be th e sam e for soils as for clays, in spite of th e fact th a t th e la tte r a re fro m older geological fo rm a tions (from lias to pliocene). H isto gram s of th e m in e ral d istrib u tio n as d ep e n d en t of th e grain size for tw o sam ples of soils a re p rese n ted in Fig. 2.

It follow s from th e re su lts p rese n ted above th a t m inerals occuring in soils an d clays show c h a ra c te ristic ran g es of g rain size fo r a given m ineral. The absence of feld sp a r in fine fractio n s is due to its sm all sta b ility in supergen e conditions, fine g rain s being m ost easily dissolved.
The absence of q u a rtz below 0.5 ja can be ex p lain ed also by th e ir disso lu
tion. Am ong th e clay m in erals dickite has the m ost ord er s tru c tu re an d it co n cen trates in coarser fraction s; sim ilar b eh av io u r is ex h ib ited by k ao

n ite T. K ao linite pM show ing a d iso rd ered s tru c tu re in w hich, as it is assum ed a c e rtain n u m b er of isom orphic su b stitu tio n s is observed, is found m ost fre q u e n tly below 1 \i. Illite an d m o n tm o rillo n ite m in erals of th e o rdered stru c tu re s a re fou nd in th e ran g e of th e fin e st grains. G en e ra lly one can say th a t th e less o rd ered is th e s tru c tu re of a clay m in eral, th e sm aller c ry sta ls it form s.
T he shape of cu m u lativ e cu rves of g rain size d istrib u tio n for clay m in erals occuring in soils an d clays w as th e n analysed. For th is from th e in v estig ated sam ples we selected those in w hich co n ten t of q u a rtz and o th er d e trita l com ponents did not exceed 10%, an d as such, could be n eglected. T h eir g rain d istrib u tio n is th e n p ra c tic a lly a g rain d istrib u tio n of clay m in erals. On th is basis it w as possible to d istin g u ish sev eral ch a ra c te ristic v a ria n ts of th e g rain size d istrib u tio n for the clay m inerals (Fig. 3). The g rain size d istrib u tio n w as c h aracterized also n u m erica lly by

in th e points 75 an d 25% of c u m u lativ e curve.
The follow ing ty p es of g rain size d istrib u tio n are found m ost fre q u e n tly for clay m in erals (Fig. 3):
a) clay m in erals show a n a rro w ran g e of g rain size, w h at is show n by
a step of cum u lativ e curve. This ty p e d istrib u tio n is c h a ra c te ristic for clay m ate ria ls of th e sim ple m in e ral com position, con tainin g one or tw o
clay m inerals. S uch g rain size d istrib u tio n is ex h ib ited by e.g. m iocene fire clays occuring in L ow er Silesia, co n tain in g m a in ly kao lin ite pM and illite - m o n tm o rillo n ite pliocene clays also from th is region. The g rain size of clay
m in erals in th ese clays is co n tain ed in th e n a rro w ran g e 0.1— 1 (Fig. 3a,
curv e 1). A sim ilar g rain size cu rv e is o b serv ed for dickite fro m W iśniów ka (near Kielce), a m in e ral of th e h y d ro th e rm a l origin. It is m ore coarse-g

in ed a n d th e ran g e of its g rain size is 4— 40 ц, (Fig. 3a, cu rve 2). This ty p e of g rain size d istrib u tio n is ch ara c te riz e d by a low coefficient SQ (1.3— 1.6). In th e a u th o rs opinion such a g rain size d istrib u tio n in d icates th a t clay m in erals w ere form ed as a re s u lt of one process in the s tric tly d e te rm in e d physico-chem ical conditions (cry stallizatio n fro m the h y d ro th e rm a l so lu tions, tra n s itio n of th e s tru c tu re of illite in to k ao lin ite in th e acidic m e dium , fo rm atio n of k ao lin ite in th e process of w e a th erin g of feldspar).

b) The g rain size of a clay m a te ria l varies in th e w ide range, th e g rain d istrib u tio n being close to norm al. T he cu rve of th e g rain com position has th en a sm aller slope an d th e coefficient S 0 is contained b etw een 2.5— 3.5. Such a g rain size d istrib u tio n is fo u n d in a clay m ate ria ls of some p rim a ry kaolins and some te rry g e n ic clay sedim ents. It ap p ears th a t it is ty p ic a l of a clay m ate ria l, w hich w as fo rm ed in a n u m b er of in d ep e n d e n t processes such as sim u ltan eo u s w e a th e rin g of se v era l k in d s of various p rim a ry m in erals or b y deposition in a sed im en tatio n basin of clay m in e rals of d iffe re n t origin.
c) C um u lative cu rves of a d istin c tly tw o -ste p shape in d icate th e p re sence of tw o groups of g rains of d iffe re n t m in e ral com position, or com po sed of th e sam e m in erals fo rm ed in v e ry d iffe re n t conditions. Such curv es are yield ed often by illite clays, in w h ich fine fra c tio n contains illite and m o n tm o rillo n ite or clay m in erals of m ixed layer s tru c tu re an d th e coarse fra c tio n com prises co arse-g rain ed m ica and hydrom ica. In som e clays p rim a ry k aolins th e fin e fra c tio n is com posed of k ao lin ite pM, th e coarse fra c tio n d istin c tly se p ara te d fro m the fine one contains k ao lin ite T. This ty p e of th e g rain size d istrib u tio n is c h aracterized by th e coefficient S 0 h ig h er th a n 3.
d) D e trita l q u a rtz produces an a d d itio n a l step in th e cu m u lativ e curve
u su a lly above 10 m, (Fig. 3c). It is p a rtic u la rly d istin ct in the cum u lativ e
curves of loesses. C urves of th is ty p e ap p eared ty p ic a l of th e soils in v e sti gated. T he g rain size d istrib u tio n of th e clay m a te ria l occuring in th em is given by th e curve b (Fig. 3), g rain size ran g e being how ever sm aller.
It seem s th a t curves of th e g rain com position of th e clay m a te ria l can in some cases prov ide in fo rm a tio n ab ou t th e conditions of its form atio n. This prob lem re q u ire s f u rth e r d eta ile d studies.

Диккит .(dickit) н аходи т ся исклю ч ительно во ф р а к ц и я х к р уп н ее 1 микрона. К аоли н и т „Т” в стречается в основном в п р е д е л а х 0,5— 20 микронов; каолинит „рМ ” — в п р ед ел а х 1— 01 микрона. И ллит к он - цен трмруетс’я в области 1— ОД микрона. М онтмориллонит груп п и руется н и ж е 0.2 микрона. Чем м енее уп ор я доч ен а струк тура глинистого минерала, тем м ельче о бр азую щ и еся кристаллы .
