Tutorial 7

Stability of the atmosphere

Consider an unsaturated parcel that is displaced upward inside the condi- tionally unstable layer. Assume a constant lapse rate Γ = 0.008K/m up to the hight z = 10km and a lapse rate of zero above that height (the same conditions ias presented in lecture thermodynamics 12).

A parcel of air is lifted from the ground level (p = 1000hP a) having initial temperature 20oC and specific humidity qv = 7.48g/kg is lifted upward.

1. Calculate parameters (T, p, z) of the lifting condensation level (LCL).

2. Calculate parameters (T, p, z) of the level of free convection (LFC).

3. Calculate parameters (T, p, z) of the level of neutral buoyancy.

4. Calculate the value of the convective available potential energy (CAPE).

5. Plot a profile of potential energy.

In practice a balance occurs between the Coriolis terms and the stress due to small-scale turbulent motion, and this gives rise to a boundary layer that has a typical depth of.. tens

If the temperature lapse rate in the environment is smaller to the parcel’s temperature lapse rate (either dry or wet adiabatic) then that parcel (dry or wet) experience a
