FRIDAY EVENING NOVEMBER 12 at 8:30

November 11, 1918, with the total defeat of the Imperial German Army, the Polish State was re

established after 123 years of slavery. Hence the day of the Eleventh of November is Polish Independ

ence Day. In observance of Polish Independence Day of 1943, and to mark that spirit of independence and fortitude which, now more than ever, characterizes the struggle of their Polish brethren against the brutal Nazi usurper, the Polish Relief and Defence Committee in Montreal is sponsoring a Festival of Polish Music at the St. Denis Theatre on the evening of November 12th.

The program will include music by Poland's most representative composers, by Frederic François Chopin, Stanislaw Moniuszko, M. Karłowicz, Karol Szymanowski and by Felix Roderick Labunski (the lat

ter now resident in the United States will be present for the ocasion).

This music will be interpreted by three of Poland's greatest executive musicians. The three are Gregor Fitelberg, Poland’s leading conductor, who will direct the Montreal Philharmonic Orchestra of 75 musicians, especially assembled for the event. Bronislaw Huberman, the distinguished violinist, and Witold Malcuzynski, the brilliant young Polish pianist.

It is felt that the presentation of the above composers by three such outstanding representatives ol Poland will not only be a fitting tribute to a country which, as much as any of those fighting the Hitler menace, has contributed to the eventual triumph of the United Nations, but also that it will present, for the first time in Montrael, au authoritative conception of the vitality and beauty of Poland's musical culture.

THE COMPOSERS

FREDERIC FRANCOIS CHOPIN 1810-1849. — Poland's greatest composer and one of the greatest composers of all time. Regarded as one of the greatest artist of the romantic era, a pianist of unsurpas

sed beauty and virtuosity, one who revolutionized the concept of pianoforte music and left behind more than 200 compositions of superb technical brilliance and poetic power, most of which reflect him as a great Polish patriot and lover of his country.

STANISLAW MONIUSZKO 1819 1872 — Native of Warsaw. Considered as the most outstanding Polish composer of the 19th century proper after Chopin. Father of Polish national opera, five of his operas being in the permanent repertory of the Polish Theatre. Creator of the Polish art-song.

KAROL SZYMANOWSKI 1883-1937 — Born in the Polish Ukraine on September 21, 1883. Second only to Chopin in the ranks of Polish composers and regarded as one of the greatest of modern composers.

Formed Mloda Polska (Young Poland) for the furtherance of Polish music in collaboration with Gregor Fitelberg, conductor of this festival. Died at Lausanne on March 28, 1937, buried in Warsaw.

FELIX RODERICK LABUNSKI. Outstanding Polish composer, pianist, critic and lecturer. Born Ksaw- erynowo, Poland, on December 27, 1892. Pupil of Maliszewski, Paul Dukas and Lili Boulanger.
