on the detailed conditions of completing first-cycle and second-cycle studies as well as diploma theses and diploma examinations at the Faculty of Letters The general conditions of completing studies at the University of Wrocław are defined in the Regulations of Studies at the University of Wrocław (Resolution no. 94/2019 of the Senate of the University of Wrocław of 22 May 2019), in particular in part IX Completion of studies sections 43-49), hereinafter referred to as the Regulations of Studies).

Pursuant to section 43 of the Regulations of Studies, Resolution no. 149/2016 of the Senate of the University of Wrocław of 21 December 2016 on the guidelines for the councils of basic organisational units concerning the development of the programmes of first-cycle, second-cycle and long-cycle master’s studies, postgraduate studies, training courses and training based on the Polish Qualifications Frameworks (as amended), Regulation no. 9/2018 of the Rector of the University of Wrocław of 7 February 2018 on implementing the procedure of graduating, verifying diploma theses by means of the antiplagiarism system, archiving diploma theses by means of the Archive of Diploma Theses (Archiwum Prac Dyplomowych (APD)) and submitting theses to the Polish Repository of Written Diploma Theses (Ogólnopolskie Repozytorium Pisemnych Prac Dyplomowych (ORPPD)) (as amended), The Council of the Faculty of Letters defines the following requirements for completing first-cycle and second-cycle studies, the requirements for diploma theses and the form of diploma examinations:

FIRST-CYCLE STUDIES

1. The student of first-cycle studies (or in specific cases, after obtaining the dean’s consent, a team of students, pursuant to section 44, point 6 of the Regulations of Studies) independently, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Faculty of Letters (exceptions are defined in section 44, point 1 of the Regulations of Studies) and in connection with the diploma seminar, prepares a diploma thesis which should contain approximately from 55,000 to 70,000 characters, (including spaces), including references. Moreover, each diploma thesis should include a concise summary (containing no more than 4,000 characters, including spaces) and keywords (containing no more than 1,000 characters, including spaces) in Polish. If the diploma thesis is written in Polish, it must include the title page and keywords in Polish and English.

In the field of study philology and the fields of study established by Resolutions nos.

30-56 of the Senate of the University of Wrocław of 20 March 2019, preparing a diploma thesis in the major studied language does not require a separate consent of the dean or head of the teaching unit. If the diploma thesis is written in the studied foreign language, it must include the title page and keywords in Polish and the studied foreign language.

2. Before the commencement of the work on the diploma thesis, the student submits to the supervisor a written consent of the administrator of the statutorily protected secrecies, including professional secrecies, included in the diploma thesis, a consent to make the diploma thesis available in the Polish Repository of Written Diploma Theses (if required; if the diploma thesis contains such secrecies). The template of the declaration of the administrator of the statutorily protected secrecies expressing the consent to make the diploma thesis available in the Polish Repository of Written Diploma Theses is to be found as an enclosure to the Regulation of the Rector of the University of Wrocław on implementing the procedure of graduating, verifying diploma theses by means of the antiplagiarism system, archiving diploma theses by means of the Archive of Diploma Theses (Archiwum Prac Dyplomowych (APD)) and uploading theses to the Polish Repository of Written Diploma Theses (Ogólnopolskie

Repozytorium Pisemnych Prac Dyplomowych (ORPPD)). The supervisor is obliged to enclose this declaration with the notification of the scheduled diploma examination submitted to the dean’s office of the Faculty of Letters.

3. The bachelor’s diploma thesis is an independent study of descriptive or analytic character, resulting from the application of at least some research procedures, equipped with the apparatus characteristic of scholarly texts. With the dean’s consent, the supervisor’s and department head’s or director’s opinions, the diploma thesis can also be an independent project complying with the principles of originality and equipped with the elements presenting the methodology used. In this case, the dean can also allow the student to prepare the diploma thesis which does not comply with the requirements concerning its length presented in point 1 hereinabove on the minimum length of diploma theses. The student’s own translation, along with the appropriate commentary and methodological framework, can also be presented as a diploma thesis.

4. During the bachelor’s diploma examination, the student answers three questions.

Two questions refer to the scope of the scholarly field defined by the council of the institute or chair and the student has the right to select the scope from among those defined by the council. The selection has to be made at last a month before the examination date. One examination question concerns the diploma thesis and its widely understood context. The examination does not cover the contents of all the courses in the programme and does not verify the achievement of particular learning outcomes. The examination can be written, oral or mixed (as provided for in the programmes for particular fields of study).

5. The formal conditions which the supervisor of the bachelor’s diploma thesis and the examination board have to fulfil are defined in the Regulations of Studies. The bachelor’s diploma thesis is subject to the procedures of registration, archiving and verification by the Uniform Antiplagiarism System, described in separate regulations of the Rector and other regulations which are binding at the Faculty of Letters.

6. The topics of bachelor’s diploma theses are approved by appropriate councils of institute’s/chair’s and announced to students by publishing them on the institute/chair website no later than one semester before the scheduled completion of studies. The final title can diverge from the approved topic; however, the basic scope of the knowledge and methods defined in the topic have to be maintained.

7. With reference to section 11, point 7 of Resolution no. 149/2016 of the Senate of the University of Wrocław, the Council of the Faculty of Letters decides that the number of the ECTS credits assigned to bachelor’s seminars reflects the student's workload while writing the diploma thesis and preparing for the diploma examination.

8. The council of the institute/chair specifies the scopes of the bachelor’s examination and its specific principles by 30 June of the academic year preceding the year, in which the diploma examination is to take place.

SECOND-CYCLE STUDIES

9. The student of second-cycle studies (or in specific cases, after obtaining the dean’s consent, a team of students, pursuant to section 44, point 6 of the Regulations of Studies) independently, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Faculty of Letters (exceptions are defined in section 44, point 1 of the Regulations of Studies) and in connection with the master’s seminar, prepares a diploma thesis which should contain approximately from 110,000 to 140,000 characters (including spaces), including references. Moreover, each master’s thesis should include a concise summary (containing no more than 4,000 characters, including spaces) and keywords (containing no more than 1,000 characters, including spaces) in Polish. If the diploma thesis is written in Polish, it must include the title page and keywords in Polish and English.

11. The master’s thesis is an independent study of scholarly character which should fulfil the requirements of writing such theses, in particular, it must make use of the procedures and apparatus characteristic of scholarly texts and manifest the performance of a scholarly (analytic or problem-related) task in a written form. With the dean’s consent, the supervisor’s and department head’s or director’s opinions, the diploma thesis can also be an independent project complying with the principles of originality and equipped with the elements presenting the methodology used. 12. During the master’s diploma examination, the student answers three questions related to the contents of the scientific field, within which the master’s thesis is located and at least one question refers directly to the master’s thesis and the methodology used therein. The examination does not cover the contents of all the courses in the programme and does not verify the achievement of particular learning outcomes. The examination is oral.

13. The formal conditions which the supervisor of the master’s diploma thesis and the examination board have to fulfil are defined in the Regulations of Studies. The final title can diverge from the approved topic; however, the basic scope of the knowledge and methods defined in the topic have to be maintained.

15. With reference to section 11, point 8 of Resolution no. 149/2016 of the Senate of the University of Wrocław, the Council of the Faculty of Letters decides that the number of the ECTS credits assigned to master’s seminars reflects the student’s workload while writing the master’s diploma thesis and preparing for the diploma examination.
