Preface

We place in the hands of our Readers a subsequent vol- ume of the journal Antiquitates Mathematicae (Annals of the Polish Mathematical Society, Series VI). The journal has been published since the year 2007. Since 2014 we also function in an electronic form on the journal portal of the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM). In the years 2011-2014 the publication of the journal was suspended; the Commission for the History of Mathematics by the Principal Board of PTM did not function either.

Let us recall that since 1985 scientific conferences in history of math- ematics have been taking place cyclically, organized by the Commission for the History of Mathematics by the Principal Board of PTM. Publi- cations of materials from these conferences was prepared by individual scientific centers (the list of the volumes and their content is contained in Antiquitates Mathematicae, vol. 1). In the years 2007-2009 a sub- stantial proportion of talks from the nationwide conferences in history of mathematics was published in Antiquitates Mathematicae.

In 2013, the community of historians of mathematics made an at- tempt at reactivating the Commission for the History of Mathematics, which functioned by the Principal Board of PTM since 1977, as well as at restarting the publication of Antiquitates Mathematicae. At the meet- ing at the University of Wrocław of the representatives of the Principal Board of PTM with a broad representation of the community a par- tial success was achieved by restarting the publication of the journal (reactivation of the Commission for the History of Mathematics failed there).

The managing of the editorial board was entrusted to Prof. Krzysztof Szajowski (Wrocław University of Technology), the vice-president of the PTM responsible for its journals, while the section editors were selected in a competition: Biographies – Stanisław Domoradzki (Rzeszów), His- tory of Polish Mathematics – Danuta Ciesielska (Kraków), History and philosophy of mathematics– Małgorzata Stawiska-Friedland (Ann Ar- bor, USA), Death Notices, Letters, Reports, Reviews – Zdzisław Pogoda (Kraków) and Walerian Piotrowski (Warszawa). Out of the previous members, Roman Duda, Lech Maligranda, Jerzy Mioduszewski, Roman Murawski, Andrzej Schinzel, Witold Wi¸esław and Krystyna Wuczyńska

remained in the Scientific Committee. Two members of the Scientific Committee, Andrzej Pelczar (1937-2010) i Krzysztof Tatarkiewicz (1923- 2011), died.. Dr hab. Witold Wi¸esław resigned from the participation in the Scientific Committee of Antiquitates Mathematicae at the beginning of the year 2014.

The first task accomplished by Editor Szajowski was transportation of three volumes of Antiquitates Mathematicae I–III to a portal dedi- cated to the journal. This time-consuming work consisted , among oth- ers, in establishing Polish and English titles, development of abstracts of papers in Polish and English, development of keywords in Polish and English and confirming the authors’ addresses.

Due to the suspension of the publication of the journal Antiquitates Mathematicae in 2011, the materials from subsequent scientific confer- ences in history of mathematics were published as Dzieje Matematyki Polskiej by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Wrocław Uniwersity (the editor of both volumes was Witold Wi¸esław).

The Principal Board of PTM decided that these two volumes of Dzieje are a natural part of Antiquitates Mathematicae. As a consequence of such a position articles from Dzieje Matematyki Polskiej were incorpo- rated into the electronic edition of Antiquitates Mathematicae (volumes:

Tom IV(2010) electronic version, Tom V(2011) electronic version, Vol- ume VI(2012) electronic versionand Tom VII(2013) electronic version).

On this matter an agreement was signed between the Faculty of Mathe- matics and Computer Science of the Wrocław Uniwersity (the publisher of the volumes) and the Principal Board of PTM.

The Volume VIII(2014) of Antiquitates Mathematicae was published as edited by K. Szajowski (the paper version of the volume is available in some libraries). After an evaluation in 2015, the journal was included in the List B developed by the ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The current makeup of the Editorial Board and the Editorial Com- mittee, taking into account also the editors of Polish and English lan- guages, is printed on the inner cover.

In the presented here Volume IX (2015) of Antiquitates Mathemati- cae we introduced new sections: Essays, History of application of math- ematics. By publishing some articles in foreign languages we try to ac- quire also foreign authors, and to display problems related to the history of Polish mathematics in a broader worldwide context.

Editor-in-Chief Rzeszów, 31 grudnia 2015 r. Stanisław Domoradzki
