J.G. van Daelen De logistiek van plaatonderdelen: verbetering van de materiaalstroom in de voorbewerking bij Van der Giessen-de Noord.
Masters thesis, Report 97.3.LT.4967, Transport Technology, Logistic Engineering.
Van der Giessen-de Noord Shipbuilding (GNS) has to offer a part of the prefabrication (preparation) of plate parts to subcontractors. This consists mainly of flame-cutting of plates. A goal set by GNS is to do all their flame-cutting at the own production facilities. Purpose of this study is to state possibilities to enhance the flow of materials in the prefabrication. Primary target is to improve the productivity of the flame-cutting machines. The improved logistics in the prefabrication will also benefit the productivity in general.
The research project is divided in three parts. Firstly the current situation in the prefabrication is studied by examining the production as well as talking to employees and their superiors. Secondly an inventory is made of the number of parts that has to be made in a year. Thirdly a simulation model is developed and used in order to assess the effect of changes to the layout of the production.
Improvement of the productivity will only be achieved if: 1. disturbances in the production are decreased; 2. crane capacity enhanced;
3. the separation and sorting of parts and plate material is improved.
Improving only one of these items will not lead to real improvement of productivity. Ways to achieve improvement are the construction of a new flame-cutting shop, buying new transportation equipment (automatic, sorting crane) and improving communications between departments.
