Professor Wojciech Silny

On 29 September 2015, Professor Wojciech Silny, a doctor, scientist, teacher of many generations of doctors, professor emeritus of the Dermatology Clinic of the Poznan Medical University, Editor-in-Chief of “Advances in Dermatology and Allergology” passed away.

Professor Silny was born on 12 July 1942 in Chobielin.

After primary education he attended the Marcin Kasp- rzak High School in Poznan, where he passed his final examinations in 1960. His ties with the Poznan Medical Academy, later the Poznan Medical University, as a med- ical student started in 1961. Since 1968 he has been an employee of the University first as an assistant, senior assistant, lecturer, associate professor and finally tenured professor. In cooperation with the Dermatology Clinic and Institute of Immunology of the Vienna University he established in 1995 a Center for Allergic Disease Diag- nostics, which he managed as a director until 2001. He has acted as the Head of Dermatology Clinic from 2002 to 2012.

Many years of his research, didactic and clinical work came into fruition in 2002 when he was appointed the Head of Dermatology Clinic of the Poznan Medical University, where he strived to continue ideas of his great predecessors. Professor Silny emphasized that he was lucky to have great teachers: professor Julian Rosner, doctor Adam Burda and professor Jerzy Bowszyc. During his term as the Head of Dermatology Clinic he trained several dozens of dermatology consultants, was a disser- tation advisor on 10 PhD and 4 DSc theses. He received several awards and honors. Helping patients was equally important, therefore he conformed all his actions to im- prove quality of care according to the latest standards.

Professor Silny emphasized that when retiring from his position at the Dermatology Clinic he felt fulfilled and happy with his 45 years of work. At the beginning of his

term as the Head of the Dermatology Clinic he promised himself to be a good man and a good manager who would not squander the work of his predecessors but rather multiply it.

Since his retirement he focused all his energy on re- inforcement of the international position of Advances in Dermatology and Allergology, what came into fruition with IF 0.845. This was his personal success since until now Advances in Dermatology and Allergology have been the only Polish dermatological journal with Impact Factor.

He treated the journal as his own kid, which he took care of as best as he could.

He passed away suddenly, but still had a lot of profes- sional and personal plans ahead of him. He had a great strength to make them happen and a great talent to infect others with his determination. He will forever be remem- bered.
