P.A. Strik Distripark Maasvlakte: karakteristieken van de containerstromen en bijbehorende overslagconcepten. Masters thesis, Report 95.3.LT.4492, Transport Engineering and Logistics.
In the next five years a so called "distripark" will be built at the Maasvlakte. This is an area meant for companies that mainly deal with storage, groupage or treatment of goods. The planned concentration of such companies induces considerable flows of goods and containers at the Maasvlakte. The size of this flow and its caracteristics are subject of this research. Also the different ways of transportation and especially of the handling of the containers that flow between the distripark and the terminals at the Maasvlakte are considered.
The transportation can be executed by the distributors themselves, by a transportation company or by ECT combining it with the existing Inter Teminal Transport (ITT). The latter incorporates most coordination wich implies that it may be executed at lowest costs. However, due to the use of special vehicies for the ITT, additional handling is required in comparison misth the first two altematives.
Two possible ways of dealing with this extra handling are examined: direct delivery by ITT at the shed and indirect delivery through a stack, the so called "verdeelcentrum".
The handling facility at the shed for the direct variant is designed. Use of a crane seems to be most suitabie for this situation. The implications of this variant on the distributors and on the ITT are determined.
In case of the indirect variant, the 'verdeelcentrum' can serve as a stack not only for distripark containers but also for the continental rail containers (i.e. containers that are exchanged between the rail and the road).
The impact of directing both flows through the 'verdeelcentrum' is considered. The area required as well as the costs of a 'verdeelcentrum' are determiried. For this purpose a model is built. It transforms the assumptions conceming the distripark Maasvlakte and the 'verdeelcentrum' into a handling pattem at the 'verdeelcentrum'. Taking this pattem into account, designs of the 'verdeelcentrum' for several combinations of containerflows are produced. Here a distinction is introduced as to what kind of handling equipment is applied: straddle carriers, reach stackers or top loaders.
The calculations show that the costs for each of these types are virtually the same. The space required, however, is larger for the latter two than for the first. In the case of the most demanding scenario of containerflows, the requirements the 'verdeelcentrum' imposes on the ITT system are determined.
