On some photos, one might notice that the edges of the objects are surrounded with colourful fringes This phenomenon is known as chromatic aberration and it is
a consequence of dispersion.
The perfect, very thin lens focuses the refracted rays exactly in the single focal point. But in the real world most of the lenses are not so perfect.
The chromatic aberration is caused by the inability of a lens to focus all colours in the single focal point. The reason is that the focal length depends on the index of refraction i.e. for blue light is larger than that of red light.

Image correc on
As the chromatic aberration reduces the image sharpness and contrast, often being an unwanted effect, especially in optical devices like telescopes, cameras, glasses or contact lenses.
The simplest method to reduce aberration is to use an aperture. However, it reduces significantly the amount of light passing through a lens.
Another way to reduce aberration is to use a set of lenses of different shapes and made from different materials.

Defini on: Achroma c lens
A concave lens is added to a single lens, made from material with greater capability to disperse light, which causes red and blue light to be focused at the same point. The fringe around the image disappears partially.

Summary
Chromatic aberration is an optical phenomenon that occurs when a lens is unable to focus all colours at the same point due to the fact that each of them has a different refraction index.
Exercises
Exercise 1
Exercise 2
Order the seven primary rainbow colours according to their focal length of a convex lens, from the largest to the smallest.
Exercise 3
Explain in English what chroma c aberra on is.
Choose the correct sentences.
Chroma c aberra on in lenses is due to dispersion of light.
For red colour the focal length of a convex lens is the largest.
When light travels from air into a glass prism, its speed decreases.
Converging lenses are thinner at the centre than at the edges.

Realizacja lekcji Polecenie
Przyglądnij się zdjęciom umieszczonym w galerii. Czy zauważasz coś szczególnego?
[Slideshow]
