EuPA
Open
Proteomics

Thetiming isright. Coinciding withthe first days ofgood weather,thisnewspringwelcomesthebirthoftheyoungest babyinthefamilyofproteomicsjournalspublishedby Else-vier. The necessary incubation and development work, in theninemonthsafteritsconceptioninbeautifulSiena,has been primarilybehindthe scenes.With theexperthelp of experiencedcolleagues ofsister journals, in particularthe
JournalofProteomicsandTranslationalProteomics,wehavenow
reachedthestagewherethe productofall this teamwork
canseethelight,and,literally,‘golive’.Weinviteyouallto
jointheexcitementoftheEuropeanProteomicsAssociation
(EuPA),theproudparentandownerofthejournal,withthe
launchofthisnoveltitleinqualityproteomeresearch.
Fully in line with the mission of EuPA, ‘to strengthen
and promotefundamental research and applications inall
areasofproteomicsacrossnationalborders’,EuPAOpen
Pro-teomicsisanonline-only,openaccessjournal.Authorsretain
copyright and are offered the choice of Creative Common
licences.WeherewithurgespecificallyallEuPAmembersto
takeadvantageofthisnewpossibilitytoenhancethe
visibil-ityofthesocietybysubmittingqualityarticlesofscientific
excellence.
Besides operating according to a different distribution
model, also in its Aims & Scope EuPA Open Proteomics
is clearly distinct from the society affiliate Journal of
Pro-teomics, which it nicely expands and complements. EuPA OpenProteomicswelcomesmanuscriptsinavarietyof‘typical’
formats.Theseincludeoriginalresearchpapers,short
com-munications,(mini)reviews,opinionpapers,andproteomics
tutorials. Enjoying all the benefits of being entirely
elec-tronic, EuPA Open Proteomics will, in addition, also accept
articlesonlargeproteomicdatasets, especiallywherethese
can serve as digital reference materials, and less
conven-tionaltypesofpieces,suchasofficialEuPAnotesandmeeting
reports. Special attention will go to the coverage ofnovel

use,distributionandreproductioninanymedium,providedtheoriginalauthorandsourcearecredited.
methodologicalandtechnicaldevelopments,including
bioin-formaticsanddataprocessing.Assuchourjournalaspiresto
becomeoneoftheprimarysourceswheremass
spectrome-tryimagingexperimentscanbedisplayed,cross-referenced,
and discussed in their full extent. At the other side of
the spectrum, also short preliminary studies that warrant
rapid publication willbe willinglyconsidered. In all cases,
scientificrigour,qualityandnoveltywillformthemain
cri-teria onthe basisofwhichmanuscriptsare evaluated and
reviewed.
It is our intention to cover the complete spectrum of
proteome sciences from basic, fundamental to applied,
translationalproteomics,frommicroorganisms,overplants,
and (model) animal species to human. Within these
fields, papers will be specially fostered that focus on
proteomicpathwayanalysesaswellasonbiologically
rele-vantsubproteomics,includingpeptidomics,lipidomics,and
glyco(proteo)mics.
EuPAOpenProteomicsisaimedatinternationalproteomics
scientists, academicand industrial,seniorand established,
butalsoyoungandpromising.InfullagreementwithEuPA’s
vision,EUPAOpenProteomicswill,therefore,specificallyoffer
junior (Europeanaswell asotherinternational)proteomics
scientists aplatform topush the distribution of their first
results, byaccepting shortpaperscommunicatingeminent
qualitystudentresearch.
WiththeenthusiasticeffortofourBoardofAssociate
Edit-ors,askilfulinternationalteamofproteomeexpertswithin
each ofthespecific(sub)disciplineslisted above,EuPAOpen
Proteomics willsoongrowupand occupyadistinctposition
amongthehighclassproteomicsjournalsoftodayandofthe
future.
Confident that the entire Proteomics community will
embrace this innovative option to propagateand promote
