European Inland Waterway Navigation Conference 8-10 June, 2005, Szeged, Hungary

Preface

This is already the fourth occasion that the Department of Aircraft and Ships of Budapest University of Teclinology and Economics supported by many other local and international authorities, organisations, scientific institutes and professional firms - among them the Danube Commission, the Commission Central pour la Navigation du Rliine, the Ministry of Economy and Transport of Hungary, Municipality of Szeged, the Institute for Transport Sciences, the DUNAFERR Portolan Forwarding Ltd., the Ferryboatmen National Associacion, and via-Donau (Austria) - organised the European Inland Waterway Navigation Conference.

In this year the conference takes place between 8-10th of June in Szeged in Hotel Novotel. The EIWN conference series has already six years history. The organisers deeply believe, that during the six years the biannual EIWN conferences could achieve good reputation among the other similar professional events. This is proved by the growing international interest, the increasing number of lecturers and participants. The conferences ensure not only possibilities for the professionals to introduce their new findings and ideas, but also good occasion for them to meet each other personally. These personal connections can be the base of further common cooperations and projects, these talks and discussions can fertilise their already existing, but still not fully worked out thoughts, and can open new development directions for the future. The organisers hope, that the EIWN conferences have the same role, and these meetings are much more than only one of those professional events, where the participants can summarize the state of art of the European inland waterway shipping.

It is already tradition, that each conference has a special theme, which gives the guideline for most of the papers and presentations. In this year the slogan of the conference is: „Shift to Shipping". The theme is very actual. The development of inland waterway navigation is a highlighted theme of the transport policy of the European Union. The inland waterway navigation tries to fmd its new role among the other transportation modes. For the professionals in Europe is obvious already since a long time, that the inland waterway navigation can not compete with the other transport modes. Not because the inland waterway shipping can not offer good quality service for the costumers, or because it can not be operated economically, rather because the specialities of these transport mode, which basically distinguish the inland waterway navigation from the other transport splits. The inland waterway navigation has to find those connecting points where it can be inserted into the transport chain. The inland waterway navigation has special advantages - unused transport potential, environmental friend and safe operation, low labour and external costs, etc. -, which can be realised only in that case i f the required technical, logistical, and organisational modernization will take place in the near future. The following papers collected in this CD-ROM are dealing with these issues. Also tradition of the EIWN conference series, that between the frames of the highlighted theme, the topics of the papers are not limited only for a small technical or business segment of inland waterway navigation. The actual conference always tries to give a global picture of the industry. The papers in this CD were edited in order of the time-table of the conference. The CD contains 30 papers from 14 countries, even from the USA and China introducing the latest results regarding to different aspects of the inland waterway navigation.

On behalf of the National Organising Committee I would like to express my thanks to the authors for their high quality and camera ready articles helping us to prepare this CD-ROM for the beginning of the conference. I would like to thank to our sponsors also - DUNAFERR Portolan Forwarding Ltd., Ganz Danubius Vitla Ltd., Germanischer Lloyd Hungary Ltd., Municipality of Szeged, Ganz Danubius Trading Co., Mészaros és Tsa. Bt., the Ferryboatmen National Associacion, Carbon Composites Kft. - for their generous financial support helping to realise this important professional event.
