378 JOURNAL OF PAPYROLOGY

according to their origin, and that the inscription in a demos raised to the state of πολίται".

C a r l o G a s t e l l o , Uacquisto della cittadinanza в i suoi rifłessi familiari nel diritto romano (1951).

This excellent dissertation has its importance also for the papy-rologists because the author makes use of papyrological literature and subsequently deals with a number of matters presented in that literature, cf. p. 26, 30 (the letter of the triumvir Octavianus to the navarch Seleucus), p. 32 (the edict of the triumvir Octavia-nus de privilegiis veteranorum), p. 34 (Έπικρίματα of Caesar and Augustus cited in the third edict of Augustus ad Cyrenenses), p. 43 (the document which is known as the edictum Domitiani de pri-vilegiis veteranorum), p. 46 (the military diplomas in favour of the peregrin veterans), p. 180 (the conubium of the persons who hold alien citizenship).

F r i e d r i c h Z u c k e r , Studien zur Namenkunde vorhelleni-stischer und hellenivorhelleni-stischer Zeit (SB der deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, Klasse für Sprachen, Literatur und Kunst, Jahrgang 1951, Nr 1), 1952.

In the third section of these studies the author deals with the Onomastiken of the Zenon Papyri (p. 6—26). The Zenon Papyri should not be underestimated on account of their contents. We find therein the names of persons, invaluable for the explanation of the social system and structure. In the times recorded in these papyri and referring to the years from 260 till 230 B. C. — the immigration into Egypt from all parts of Hellenic and Hellenised world is in full progress. The names give us exact information about the descent of the new settlers even if they lack more data. The author gives a selection of the names deserving attention, never before taken or insufficiently taken into consideration. The study of these names offers many problems also for the jurists.

I know this work only from the review published by E. G. T u r n e r in The Classical Review, New Series, volume III, number I, (1953), Oxford, (p. 44—45).
