INTRODUCTION

The present volume of Studies in Physical Culture and Tourism is being published in a brand new graph-ical layout. The new SPCT format has been modified to meet the editorial requirements of its new publisher, Cornetis. Despite these new developments our journal has retained its fully interdisciplin-ary character. Research institutions have been calling for interdisciplininterdisciplin-ary work for some time, yet few of them have been implementing the concept. We are proud of the fact that since the publication of the first volume in 1990, SPCT has been one of the few exceptional journals. We have stayed on the same interdisciplinary course. We publish reviewed articles covering the wide spectrum of sport ences, physical education, tourism and all other connected fields. Our articles draw from natural sci-ences, exercise training methodology, and humanities – in particular – cultural anthropology and sport history.

At the beginning, the SPCT was published irregularly, then annually and semi-annually. In one year three SPCT issues were published. Finally, the increasing international interest in our journal and num-ber of submitted manuscripts from many countries led us, in 2008, to publish the journal on a quar-terly basis. Our contributors include scholars and scientists from the Sorbonne, universities in Toronto, Athens, Thessaloniki, Bonn, Sterling, Teheran and many other research institutions. We take special and really great pride in contributions from numerous historians of sport and physical education from Greece – the very cradle of European sport.

Two special issues of Studies in Physical Culture and Tourism have been published so far. In 2003, a spe-cial volume on Ethnology of Sport was issued in cooperation with the European Traditional Sports and Games Association (FALSAB) and its President Guy Jaouen. The volume tackled a number of subjects from sport ethnology - a scientific discipline mainly concerned with the origins of traditional sports and games which are currently under the special care of UNESCO. In 2009, another SPCT special issue titled Sports Language and Linguistics was published under official UNESCO patronage. The volume dealt with a largely neglected area of the language, or rather languages, of millions of sports partici-pants and fans. In the future, we are planning to publish other special issues that will encompass the most significant achievements in individual research areas.

Thus Studies in Physical Culture and Tourism constitutes an interdisciplinary platform that promotes confrontation and mutual inspiration in various scientific disciplines connected with sport, physical education and tourism. We would like to invite all those whose interests are in line with the profile of our journal to contribute to this scholarly confrontation and mutual inspiration.
