The i n t e r e s t s of the O f f i c e of N a v a l Research i n arranging f o r the pub-l i c a t i o n of the c o pub-l pub-l e c t e d h y d r o d y n a m i c a pub-l papers of Sir Thomas H a v e pub-l o c k have a d u a l nature. F i r s t , we take great pleasure at t h i s o p p o r t u n i t y to express our r e s p e c t and a d m i r a t i o n f o r Sir T h o m a s , whose i n t e l l e c t u a l and s c i e n t i f i c achievements i n h y d r o d y n a m i c s have served as a source of i n s p i -r a t i o n and guidance f o -r those -resea-rche-rs who a-re f o l l o w i n g h i m . T h e e d i t o r was very honoured and d e l i g h t e d to r e c e i v e the i n v i t a -t i o n of -the O f f i c e of N a v a l Research -to e d i -t -the c o l l e c -t e d e d i -t i o n of Sir T h o m a s H a v e l o c k ' s h y d r o d y n a m i c a l p a p e r s . Since h i s f i r s t i n t r o d u c t i o n to h y d r o d y n a m i c a l research many y e a r s ago, the e d i t o r has a l w a y s garded P r o f e s s o r H a v e l o c k ' s work w i t h the greatest admiration and re-s p e c t . A n d , for nearly f o r t y y e a r re-s , a f t e r m a k i n g perre-sonal acquaintance w i t h P r o f e s s o r H a v e l o c k , the editor has r e c e i v e d much very k i n d a d v i c e and a s s i s t a n c e f r o m h i m , w h i c h he i s very g l a d to acknowledge here. N e a r l y a l l the m a t h e m a t i c a l a n a l y s i s i n these papers has been re-w o r k e d , and a number of minor m i s p r i n t s have been f o u n d . I n one or tre-wo papers more s e r i o u s changes have been made, either by P r o f e s s o r Have-l o c k h i m s e Have-l f , or w i t h h i s agreement. T h e papers are arranged i n chrono-l o g i c a chrono-l order, w i t h o u t reference to t h e i r c o n t e n t . T h e s u b j e c t r e c e i v i n g the most a t t e n t i o n i n the papers i s the development o f the m a t h e m a t i c a l theory of wave r e s i s t a n c e and wave f o r m a t i o n f o r a m o v i n g body.
