The last volume of the Prosopographia Ptolemaica deals with the army and police forces of the Lagides. As in the preceding chapters the authors refer to the date of the text on which the person in question performs his duties and indicate the place where this person stays.

Volume I V of the Inscriptiones Creticae published by M. Guar-d u c c i comprises unGuar-der No. 208 four texts from Gortyn which according to the criteria of paleographical order should be attri-buted to the 1st half of II cent. B.C.
The document in question seems to resolve the problem of the identification of Ptolomaeus Macron, the strategos of Cyprus as well as the career of Noumcaiios, the ambassador. With the help of it we may better follow the activity of Hippalos who plays an important part as an epistrategos anil eponymous priest in Ptolemais in Upper Egypt.
