Preface
B y t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h i s century, the v i t a l role o f fluid mechanics i n engineering science a n d t e c h n o l o g i c a l progress was c l e a r l y recognised. I n 1918, f o l l o w i n g a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l t r e n d , t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e c h n o l o g y i n D e l f t established a chair i n fluid d y n a m i c s , a n d we can s t i l l a d m i r e t h e w i s d o m o f the c o m m i t t e e w h i c h a p p o i n t e d t h e y o u n g t h e o r e t i c a l p h y s i c i s t , J . M . B u r g e r s , a t t h e age o f 23, t o t h i s p o s i t i o n w i t h i n t h e d e p a r t m e n t o f M e c h a n i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g , N a v a l a r c h i t e c t u r e a n d E l e c t r i c a l E n g i n e e r i n g . T h e consequences o f t h i s a p p o i n t m e n t were t o be f a r - r e a c h i n g .
J . M . B u r g e r s w e n t o n t o become one o f t h e l e a d i n g figures i n t h e field o f fluid mechanics: a g i a n t o n whose shoulders t h e D u t c h fluid mechanics c o m m u n i t y s t i l l stands. I t is t h e r e f o r e scarcely s u r p r i s i n g t h a t t h e r e c e n t l y established D u t c h research school o n fluid mechanics s h o u l d bear t h e name " J . M . B u r g e r s C e n t r e " .
T h e w o r k o f J . M . B u r g e r s has been i n f l u e n t i a l i n m a n y areas o f fluid me-chanics a n d his papers are s t i l l firequently q u o t e d , u s u a l l y i n t h e c o n t e x t o f an e q u a t i o n o r result t o w h i c h his n a m e became a t t a c h e d .
U p t o 1955 w h e n he l e f t f o r t h e U S A t o b u i l d a n e w s c i e n t i f i c career, J . M . B u r g e r s p u b l i s h e d most o f his scientific w o r k i n t h e Proceedings a n d Transac-t i o n s o f Transac-t h e R o y a l N e Transac-t h e r l a n d s A c a d e m y o f Sciences, o f w h i c h he was a dis-t i n g u i s h e d m e m b e r . Sadly, dis-these p u b l i c a dis-t i o n s are d i f f i c u l dis-t dis-t o o b dis-t a i n dis-t h r o u g h t h e u s u a l l i b r a r y channels, a n d as a r e s u l t t h e w o r k o f J . M . B u r g e r s has been f r e q u e n t l y m i s q u o t e d or, worse s t i l l , reference t o i t o m i t t e d .
A g a i n s t t h i s b a c k g r o u n d a n d t o celebrate t h e centenary o f his b i r t h , the e d i t o r s decided t o select a n d reissue those o f his papers considered t o c o n t a i n his m o s t i m p o r t a n t w o r k u p t o 1955. I t is h o p e d t h a t i n t h i s w a y his w o r k , a n d i n p a r t i c u l a r t h e papers w i t h the results t h a t s t i l l bear his n a m e , w i l l be-come accessible t o a w i d e r audience.
