PREFACE

T h e S ilesian U niversity o f Technology, b e in g o n e o f th e b ig g e st te c h n ic a l u n iv e rsitie s in P o lan d a n d th e first fo u n d ­ ed in Silesia has su ccessfu lly b e e n p u rs u in g its m issio n o f e d u c a tio n , re s e a rc h a n d d e v e lo p m e n t.

L O C A T IO N

The final decision to transfer the university seat from Katowice to Gliwice was a n n o u n ce d in March 1946, only to confirm the already existing state o f affairs.

The to w n o f Gliwice h ad several advantages including building an d h o u sin g resources co n ­ cen trated in a relatively small area, w hich w o uld enable the accom m odation o f teaching and adm inistrative units, as well as th e organisation o f the university cam pus. Such a so lu tio n was co nsisten t w ith the vision o f creating a technical university w ith its ow n cam pus and facilities, w hich w ou ld have a m ajor im pact o n th e ch aracter o f the w hole tow n.

Another, even m ore im p o rtan t advantage o f locating a technical university in Gliwice was the availability o f th e form er academ ics o f th e Technical University in Lvov, w ho had b een evacu­

ated here after World War II.

In 1998 th e R egional C o n ta c t P o in t w as c re a te d at th e Silesian U niversity o f Technology. T he aim o f RCP's activity w as to p r o m o te th e p a rtic ip a tio n o f Polish re s e a rc h team s in 5 FP. Now, RCP p ro v id e s S ilesian re s e a rc h e rs w ith in fo rm a tio n o n th e o p p o r tu n itie s o f a p p lic a tio n fo r EU fu n d s fo r scien tific research .

In 2002 th e m ain activity o f RCP w as to d isse m in a te in fo rm a tio n o n th e la te s t calls in 5 FP (calls o n jo in in g th e ex istin g p ro je c ts a n d o n esta b lish in g C e n tre s o f E x cellen ce), a n d to p re p a re th e re s e a rc h e rs fo r th e p a rtic ip a tio n in 6 FP a n d E u ro p e a n R esearch Area.

Research activity at the Institute o f Automatic C ontrol refers to a broadly u n d ersto od auto­

matic control, robotics, system analysis and signal processing. The results gained in the following areas should be m entioned: control theory in die incom plete inform ation condi­

tions, adaptation and prediction control as w ell as expert systems in this field, broadly u n d ersto o d superficial intelligence including mainly intelligent control systems and visual

systems with applications in robotics, com ­ p u te r integrated p ro d u ctio n systems, real time simulations, current m easurem ent p ro b ­ lems in view o f systems analysis and control in biom edical and biotechnological systems.

Research activity o f the Institute o f Electronics refers to the analysis, synthesis and design o f electronic and telecom m unication circuits and systems, special m icroelectronic tech­

nologies, digital signal processing, applica­

tions o f signal processors, program m able con­

trollers and microwave technique. The staff also works o n the synthesis and automatic recognition o f Polish speech m ethods, analy­

sis o f biom edical pictures, non- destructive testing m ethods, new sensor design and easi­

ly-tested electronic systems.

The Institute o f C om puter Science carries o u t research o n all the m ain areas o f com puter science, including elaboration o f software, data basses and data w arehouses design, m icrocom puter science systems and the th eo ­ ry o f digital robots, design o f com puter sci­

ence equipm ent, com puter networks, com ­ m unication reports and safety in com puter science. The Institute organises the annual conference o n co m p u ter networks.
