IN TRO DU CTIO N
One o f th e few w rite rs w ho h av e n o te d th e p a rt of phosphorus in
podzolization is K u n d l e r [1]. The elu v ial-illu v ial d iffe re n tia tio n o f
P c o n te n t is, according to him , a v e ry good in d icato r of soil podzoliza tion. H ow ever, th e o n ly ex p lan atio n of this so rt of d istrib u tio n of phosphorus in soil profiles h e gives is th a t it closely coincides w ith th a t of sesquioxides, w ith w hich phosphoric acid form s low so lu b ility phosphates.
T he phenom enon of binding ph osphates b y sesquioxides has been for a long tim e one of th e m ost im p o rta n t problem s in soil ch em istry .
R ecent stu d ies [6, 9] h ave co n firm ed th e assum ption th a t it is of th e
n a tu re o f chem isorption.
C hem isorption, how ever, can o n ly acco un t for im m obilizing phospho ru s in soil. In stu d ies on podzolization it is o f ev e n g re a te r im p ortance to accoun t for th e causes of m obilizing phosphorus in th e u p per portion of th e profile. S tu d ies on th e com binations of phosphate ions w ith hum ic sub stan ces have to a c e rta in e x te n t co n trib u te d to th e elucid ation of th is problem .
M i s t e r s k i a nd Ł o g i m o w [5] stu d ied how reactions proceeded in system s containing hum ic acids (from com post extracts), soluble ph o sphates a n d Ca2+, F es+ a n d A l8+ ions. These a u th o rs h av e fo un d th a t th e presence of hum ic acids p rev e n ts to a large e x te n t th e p recip i tatio n o f inorganic phosphates, w hile on th e o th e r hand, th e presence of phosphates in h ib its th e process of coagulation of hum ic acid by th e above-m en tio n ed ions. A ccording to them , th e in te rac tio n o f th ese com pounds b rin g in g a b o u t a n in crease in th e ir so lu b ility is due in th e

first place to th e form atio n of hum ic acids-p ho sp hates com plexes b rid g ed by m etal ions. T he re s u lts obtained by M isterski and Loginov have been su p ported by la te r w orks by L e v e s q e a n d S c h n i t z e r
[3], L e v e s q u e [2] an d S i n h a [10]. In th e la tte r w orks w ere used
hum ic an d fulvic acids e x tra c te d from podzol hum us. It has b een found th a t a sh -fre e or low -ash hum ic an d fulvic acid p rep a ra tio n s do n o t form sta b le com pounds w ith ph o sphates. In th e presence of F e3+ or A l3+ ions, how ever, stab le com plex organom etallic p h o sp h ates a re form ed. A ccording to S i in h a .[10], such com plexes m ay form in soil as a re s u lt of rea c tions of soluble phosphates w ith F e- a n d A l-hum ic a n d fulvic acids com plexes o r of insoluble F e- an d A l-phosphates w ith hum ic a n d fu l vic acids o ccurring in soil solution. The a c tu a l role of com plex o rgano- -m etallic phosphates in phosphorus m ig ration needs f u rth e r studies.
S tudies on tran sfo rm atio n s o f phosphorus com pounds in soil chrono- sequences hav e provided in te re stin g re su lts [12]. In u n w e a th ere d bed rock the prevailing form of phosphorus is ap atite. A ccording to W a l
k e r a nd S y e r s [12], w ith th e developm ent of th e pedogenic process
the a m o u n t of calcium phosphates, co m parativ ely easily available for p lants, g rad u a lly decreases, w hile th e a m o u n t of organic phosphorus and of inorganic low -solu bility form s increases. A fter th e calcium phos p h ate supp lies have been e x h a u s te d ,. th ere is a decrease in organic p h osphorus co n tent due to th e low am o u n t o f phosphorus tak e n in by p lants. T he w hole o f inorganic phosphorus passes in to form s inaccessible to p lan ts (iron an d a lu m in iu m phosphates occluded by sesquioxides).
The p rese n t w ork re p o rts th e re su lts of studies on th e d istrib u tio n of phosphorus in profiles of ferro -h u m ic podzols an d describes th e geo chem ical conditions u n d er w hich phosphorus m ig rates in these soils. A n a tte m p t has been also m ade a t d e te rm in in g th e degree of a d v a n cem en t of tra n sfo rm atio n of phosphorus com pounds in th e p a rtic u la r genetic horizons of podzols.
M A TER IA L A N D M ETH ODS
T he p rese n t studies have been m ade o n the sam e podzol profiles th a t w ere analy zed e a rlie r for th e p articip atio n of Fe, A1 a n d Si in
podzolization i[7, 8].
T he to ta l phosphorus conten t (P t) in ra w hu m u s w as d eterm ined
a fte r m in eralizatio n in cone. H2S 04 w ith a n a d d itio n of 30% H / ) 2,
a n d in th e m in e ral p o rtion of th e p rofile a fte r m elting th e sam ples w ith
N a2C 0 3. M oreover, th e d ith io n ite e x tra c te d phosphorus fractio n (Pd) was
d e te rm in e d by M e h ra -Ja c k so n ’s m ethod. S u b ject to th is e x tra ctio n a re m ain ly com binations of phosphorus w ith sesquioxides. The q u a n tita tiv e a n a ly sis of phosphorus w as m ade b y th e colorim etric m etho d w ith m olibdenie blue.
R E SU L TS A N D D ISC U SSIO N
A m ong th e a sh c o n stitu e n ts o f podzol ra w h u m u s phosphorus occu pies a specific position. In th e successive A 0 subhorizons it does n o t becom e so stro n g ly c o n c en tra te d as Si, A1 an d Fe, o r so ra p id ly r e
duced as th e basic elem ents, p a rtic u la rly Ca [cf. 7, 8]. In th e in itial
stages of m in eralization a n d h u m ificatio n of th e p la n t litte r fall th e re is u su ally a c e rtain in crease in phosphorus con centration. This increase is p ro b ab ly due to th e fact th a t th e r a te a t w hich P is released from its organic com pounds is com parativ ely slow, w hile th e to ta l m ass of p la n t rem ain s decreases a t a quick rate. A t th e follow ing stage of o rg a nic m a tte r tra n sfo rm atio n (in A 0F o r A 0H) a decrease in phosphorus c o n te n t is observed, p ro b ab ly due to its being tak e n in by p lan ts an d possibly also p a rtia lly w ashed dow n to th e m in e ral p o rtion of th e profile.
In th e m in e ral horizons of th e podzols u n d e r stu d y th e re is a g rea t
d eal of v ariatio n in phosphorus con tent (Table 2). T he to ta l phosphorus
co n te n t (P205t) in th e bedrock am o u n ts to o n ly some h u n d re d th s of one
p e r c e n t (except in P ro file 3, w h ere it is s lin g h tly higher). The eluvial

horizons a re even poorer th a n th e bedrock, w hereas in th e illu v ia l horizons th e phosphorus co n cen tratio n is several tim es th a t in the b ed
rock. The m ax im um P^05t co n ten t in a ll th e profiles in question occurs
in subhorizon B h a n d am o u n ts to 0.17-0.25%. The phosphorus fractio n su b ject to e x tra ctio n in d ith io n ite to g eth er w ith th e sesquioxides (P/Dsj) also shows eluvio-illu vial d iffe re n tia tio n — Fig. 1.
T he q uestion arises w h e th e r th e p hosphorus m ig ratio n from horizons A 0 a n d A e to horizon В goes on in th e form of free p ho sphate ions or in com binations w ith o th e r co n stitu en ts of th e soil solution. Soluble o rg an o -m etal-p h o sp h ate com plexes m ay form alre ad y in ra w hum us, w here a ll th e n ecessary com ponents a re present. F ulvic acids form ing in th e course of decom position of p la n t rem ains m ay, in th e presence of Fe a n d A1 ions, re a c t w ith th e lib e ra te d phosp hate ions. Also in th e eluvial horizons a d e q u ate conditions exist for th e form ation

of th e com plexes in question. In d ire ct evidence of th e com m on m ig ra tion of fulvic acids, sesquioxides a n d p h o sphates is provided b y th eir comm on accu m u lation dn th e illu v ial horizon. Since th e m axim u m phos p h o rus co n ten t occurs in subhorizon B h to g eth er w ith free Fe m axim um , it m ay be in fe rre d th a t in binding ph osphates F e is m ore im p o rta n t th a n Al.
T he v ary in g v a lu e of th e ratio Pd/Pt in th e p rofile (Table 2) d e se r ves som e a tte n tio n . It determ in es th e p ercen tag e of th e phosphorus fractio n bound w ith R20 3 in to ta l phosphorus, a n d in d ire ctly perm its to e stim ate th e p ercen tag e of o th e r form s of phosphorus. P h osp hates com bined w ith R 20 3 co n stitu te th e m ajo r p a rt of soil phosphorus in illu v ial horizons, p a rtic u la rly in subhorizon Bh, w h ere th e Pd/Pt ratio

reaches values ran g in g from 0.52 to 0.95. Below subhorizon B hs th is fraction g ra d u a lly decreases, a n d in th e bedrock its p ercen tag e is negligible (P^/Pt in horizon С ran g es from 0.03 to 0.13). Since horizons Bs/C a n d С essentially lack organic phosphorus com pounds, th e low values of Pd/Pt a re evidence of a clear predom inance in these horizons of the calcium p ho sp h ate fraction. In th e eluvial horizon, on the o th e r hand, w here, co nsidering th e fairly ra p id decom position of a p a tite [7,
11], no considerable p ercentag e of calcium p ho sphates is to be expected,
th e low Pd/Pt v alu es point to a h igh er co n ten t of organic phosphorus com pounds.
T he p ictu re of p rofile d iffe re n tia tio n of th e p rin cip al phosphorus fraction s in podzols o b tain ed in th e p rese n t stu d y is essentially in a g re em ent w ith the d a ta re p o rte d by M a с L e a n an d cow orkers [4] except for th e illu v ia l horizon, w h ere th ey found a low er c o n te n t of the phos p h a te fractio n com bined w ith Fe and A1 and a h ig h er one of th e or ganic phosphorus fraction. The differences a re due to u neq u al ex tra c tio n capacities of the rea g e n ts used a n d to the d ifficulty in d r a w ing a precise b o rd erlin e b etw een organic a n d inorganic phosphorus in soil. M oreover, M acL ean’s and co w o rkers’ d ata suggest th a t th e F e- arnd A l-ph o sp hate com binations accu m u lated in horizon В become to a larg e e x te n t occluded by am orphous Fe oxides.
W hen com paring th e q u a lita tiv e a n d q u a n tita tiv e d iffe re n tia tio n of phosphorus com pounds in podzol profiles w ith th e gen eral schem e of tran sfo rm atio n s of these com pounds in soil elab o rated by W a l k e r a nd S y e r s [12], it is seen th a t th e fo rm e r corresponds fa irly w ell w ith th e la tte r. The podzol bedrock, in w hich th e m ost im p o rta n t fra c tion of phosphorus is calcium ph o sphates corresponds to th e in itial stage of tran sfo rm atio n s of phosphorus com pounds in W alker an d S y e rs’ schem e. The illu v ial horizon, on th e o th er hand, in w hich along side w ith organic form s of phosphorus occur n e a rly exclusively com
binations of phosphorus w ith K203 occluded to a larg e e x te n t by Fe
oxides, corresponds to th e fin al s ta g e ‘of phosp horus com pounds tra n s form ations in soil.
C O N C LU SIO N S
1. T he tran sfo rm atio n s a n d th e m ig ratio n of phosphorus com pounds
co n stitu te im p o rta n t elem ents of podzolization.
2. The p rim a ry form of phosphorus in podzols is in the first place
calcium phosphates (apatite). The h igh a c id ity of th e u p p er p o rtio n of th e podzol p rofile causes a co m p arativ ely rap id (com pared w ith o th e r soils) decom position of these phosphates.
3. Biological accu m u latio n in horizon A 0 involves a n accum ulatio n of organic phosphorus com pound. M ineralization of these com pounds is
associated w ith secondary tak in g in of phosphorus by p lan ts a n d w ith p a rtia l w ashing it dow n th e profile.
4. In th e illu v ia l horizon of podzols a considerable accu m u latio n of
phosphorus is observed, an d its m ax im u m co n te n t occurs in subhorizon Bh. T he m ost lik ely form of phosphorus m ig ratio n from horizons A 0
an d A e to horizon В is o rg an o -m etal-p h o sp h ate com plexes com posed o f
fulvic acids, Fe a n d A1 ions a n d pho sp h ate ions.

В озм ож н ость образов ан и я таких со еди н ен и й в почве д о казан а многими авторами [2, 5, 10]. В п о д зо л а х растворимы е F e - и А1- г у мусовы е ком плексн ы е соединен ия с ф о сф а т а м и м огут образов аться у ж е в сыром перегное, где н а х о д я т ся все им ею щ ие сущ еств ен н ое зн а ч ен и е компоненты . В ы п аден и е в осадок эт и х с л о ж н ы х ком плексов в гор и зон те В протек ает вероятно согласно подобном у м еханизм у, как тот которы й влечет за собой утрату р а ств о римости в соеди н ен и я х гум усовы х к и слот с полуторны м и окислами. З а сл у ж и в а ет внимания изм ен яю щ аяся в п р о ф и л е величина соотнош ения Pd*Pt (табл. 2). Ф осф ат ы связанн ы е с R 20 3 составляю т найболы пую часть почвенного ф о сф о р а в иллю ви альны х гор и зон тах (в B h соотн ош ен и е P d :P t достигает .величины 0,52-0,95). Н и ж е под горизонта B hs н азв ан н ая ф р ак ц и я играет все м еньш ую роль и в м атеринской породе уч асти е ее совсем н ич тож но.
