Preface

The THERMIE Programme promoting energy technology is a major European Commu-nity tool for bringing to the market innovative technologies which directly contribute to more efficient operations in the field of energy. In the oil and gas sector, THERMIE contributes fo the achievement of the European Community's most important objectives, which are the security of supply, the competitiveness of the industry, and the favourable impact on safety and the environment.

The 4th EC hydrocarbons symposium, on Oil and Gas Technology in a Wider Europe, was held in Berlin in November 1992 within the framework of the associated measures toassist the dissemination of innovative technologies. It was attended by over300 people, representing 24 countries of the world, including a large attendance from the former Soviet Union.

In addition to the 53 presentations given in nine different technical sessions, the Round Table Panel Discussion was a key event as participants from the former Eastern Bloc countries actively contributed to a useful exchange of views on thepriorities and interests of their countries, and were given the opportunity to present their knowledge and needs in hydrocarbons-related technologies, thus opening up ways for strengthened co-operation at a pan-European level.

These proceedings contain all the presentations and speeches, as well as the comments and conclusions of this most important Commission of the European Communities THERMIE Programme event.
