JANUARY/FEBRUARY 1979

The photograph below s h o w s a marine engineering curiosity which makes a diverting introduction to our annual Machinery Review. The engine, in a French wine tanker recently broken-up at Gothenburg, is a twin crankshaft Pielsticl< machine comprising fourteen of the originally-intended twenty-one cylinders of an experimental three-crankshaft engine. This engine, fabricated in 1952 but never a s s e m b l e d a s s u c h , was one of the fruits of Dipl. Ing. P i e l s t i c k ' s thwarted ambition to build a s e r i e s of multi-crankshaft engines providing almost any required power from appropriate combinations of identically-sized cylinders.

Our colleague, Mr Graeme Maclennan, editor of Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, who drew our attention to this 'two-thirds' engine, has forwarded a report that the other third — constituting an in-line seven-cylinder engine — is u s e d a s a demonstration machine at the Merchant Marine training school at Le Havre in F r a n c e .

Thp small town of Mariefred, where our editorial offices

are located, is beside a great lake. Nearby runs a trunk

road.

The lake, linked by canals to the s e a , was once the

principal bearer of heavy commercial traffic to and from

places on its shores. Now this traffic goes, to a large

extent, by road. We s e e what this means.

Happily there are strong signs of resurging interest in

waterborne transport and an increasing appreciation of

its commercial and envirortfnental benefits. We

welcome this trend and that is why we are participating

in the Inland Waterways Exhibition and Conference to

be held at Strasbourg in June.

In a difficult world situation, the renewal and

expansion of inland waterways offers one of the

brightest hopes for the small ship and workboat world.

Strasbourg should therefore .fill a most important

function. We look forward to learning a lot there.

Far from both Marieired and Strasbourg, another servant of water transport is the new C a n a d i a n icebreaker Pierre Radisson. D e s i g n e r William H. G e r m a n of Montreal reports thai s h e has perlormed 'to the delighted s a t i s f a c t i o n ol her owners'.

Every now and then, we prepare an editorial programme

for the coming twelve months or s o -— mainly to give

shape and direction to the efforts of regular

corres-pondents, but also in the belief that others will be

inspired to let us know what they are doing in the fields

mentioned. Sometimes the reaction can overshadow

our own efforts and displace the editorial e m p h a s i s in

an unintended direction.

This i s s u e is a c a s e in ppipt. Starting off with the idea

of looking at methods and equipment for ship and boat

builders, to aid quality and productivity, we found

ourselves with a quite disproportionate amount of

information from one sector: reinforced plastic. Given

the great interest which this presumably reflects (and

news from both France and the U.S., for example,

s u g g e s t s that the grp revolution in workboats is just

beginning in earnest), the obvious answer w a s to devote

a good deal of the magazine to building in grp.

Fitting integral fuel tanks in an 85 ft. grp hull at H a l m a t i c ' s H a m p s h i r e (UK) yard. While still regarded a s a big v e s s e l in this material, s u c h a project no longer attracts undue attention — e v i d e n c e of the a d v a n c e s made in grp building during the past few y e a r s .

The mv Vesterêlen, above, is one of the attractive but rapidly ageing v e s s e l s on the Norwegian C o a s t a l E x p r e s s Route — a famous service which is currently the s u b j e c t of heated d i s c u s s i o n .

The 'developing' countries have b e c o m e conditioned to take advice on shipping problems from Western European experts. The recipients of this advice might question (though quietly, if they want aid) the credentials of the advisers. How has E u r o p e solved her 'inter-island' shipping problems? Do the major developments of the past two d e c a d e s reflect vigorous belief in waterborne carriage? Or total s u b m i s s i o n to the conditions set by road transport?

Two recent deliveries of significance in the patrol/security

sector grace this month's page one. Above, a fine study

shows the first Osprey c l a s s ship from Frederil<shavn

Shipyard during speed trials. The yard already has another

order for this type, from Burma, with options taken on a

further two. Below, Havendienst 10, the first of the

Hovermarine S E S workcraft for the Port of Rotterdam,

is s e e n during a demonstration trip off Southampton.

Both these craft will be the subject of reports in the next

'Leader lady' this month is Neptun Gothia, s e c o n d of the

Brostrom-owned Neptune Marine Service Company's two

supertugs built by Ulstein H a t l ^ i n Norway — here s e e n

in colours which s h e may never bear again. Both Gotttia

and her sister Suecia are now on charter to France for

service on the Brittany coast, where they hopefully will

keep disabled Amoco Cadiz's at a safer distance in future.

Whether the French keep the vessels after the charter, or

build new ones, it s e e m s to many observers unlikely the

S w e d i s h sisters will return to their high-cost original

flag u n l e s s a major change in the market o c c u r s .

While more conventional anchorhandling/supply types

have apparently had a reasonable summer, the market

for the really big units refuses to firm-up — and this

autumn s e e s the addition of United Towing's Hong Kong

built supertug and the extremely powerful pair of tugs

from Japan for (presumably) Hong Kong flag operation.

The article on small-shipbuilding activities in Germany

which had tentatively been scheduled for this month has

unfortunately not materialised. Apologies to disappointed

readers, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Maybe one

day we'll get all our contributors wired-in to a super

computer and this sort of thing will be a v e r t e d . . . won't it?

R e s c u e d from the ignominy of a houseboat e x i s t e n c e by

the efforts of British S e a S c o u t s and a leading role in a

film, MTB 102 now looks worthy of her title a s forerunner

of several generations of naval patrol, torpedo and

gun-boats. S h e w a s built in 1937 by what then w a s Vosper &

Co., a s a private venture. She makes a good frontispiece

for an i s s u e which contains articles on modern patrol

v e s s e l s , with a look at nuclear power.

The air c u s h i o n vehicle also figures prominently in

this i s s u e . It has clearly now reached full emancipation

as a working boat. It is therefore interesting to recall

that 25th July this year marked the 20th Anniversary of

Sir Christopher C o c k e r e l ' s c r o s s i n g of the English

Channel in his prototype SRN.1 hovercraft. The day in

1959 had been c h o s e n a s being the 50th Anniversary of

Louis Bleriot's famed first flight a c r o s s the C h a n n e l .

Below: the E l s i n o r e (Denmarif) pilots point out that none of them were on board w h e n the c o x s w a i n put the Comet on Ihe b e a c h at 20 knots in thick fog, one night in J u l y .

The safety of ferries is a rather worn subject of d i s c u s

-sion and an editor faced with a fresh contribution which

fo a large extent goes over familiar ground in this area

is tempted to put it to one side, for fear of being a c c u s e d

of 'flogging a dead horse'. However, while the 'horse' in

this c a s e may be feeling the strain of hard usage by

widely assorted riders, it is certainly not dead, thank

goodness. The grounding of the Winston Churchill off

Gothenburg, which fortunately did not cost any l o s s of

life, w a s a highly salutary reminder that the scenario for

potential disaster is but thinly disguised in every routine

situation regardless of what the s t a t i s t i c s suggest.

However, no matter how worthy the subject, column

s p a c e in S&BI is too valuable to spend on repetition,

u n l e s s it illuminates fresh a s p e c t s of the subject. S o

when our correspondent Dag Pike suggested an article

on ferry safety, well before the Winston Churchill incident

gave the matter fresh urgency, the idea s e e m e d worth

while only providing the d i s c u s s i o n could be broadened.

The draft of the article wa§ therefore circulated to a wide

range of interested people to s e e what their thoughts

might be at the present day. The response w a s 100 per

cent and proves that at least one of Dag's tentative

assertions — that there is too much complacency — has

at any rate only very limited foundation.

In an issue where we review the '70s and look to the '80s

we have tried to deal with real achievements and real

hopes. It would have been easy to have looked up the

'odd ball' developments, the gimmicks and design

oddities of the '70s: to have had a good laugh and

p a s s e d on, but we c h o s e the thorny way of selection, so

wrote or commissioned articles w h i c h present

examples of hard work, sound design and high

commercial acumen. There would be many more.

When reviewing new v e s s e l s which will carry cargo

into the '80s, the one recurring word is 'flexibility'. Are

we perhaps heading into an era where cargo ships are

'all things to all men'? There is much evidence that

specifiers and naval arctiitects, with owners'

supervisors and managers, are creating a breed of small

v e s s e l with remarkable adaptability . . . ro-ro, general

cargo, containers, even barges . . . all on the s a m e ship.

It's almost a return to the 'general purpose' idea (which

is s u p p o s e d to do nothing well), but, we s u s p e c t , the

belief has been overtaken by time. Adaptability,

flexibility, is possible and profitable, with the general

use of hydraulic power to provide the vital ' m u s c l e ' of

these ships.

One phenomena of the '70s, the 'wine and dine' ship

b u s i n e s s , s e e m s set for more growth, s o we could not

resist using the picture below. It's a serious proposition

— a circular plan-form, two d e c k s , 154 diners, kitchens

and bars, all powered by two Schottel rudderpropellers

and named U S O 2000. It turns-on-the-spot of c o u r s e and

the model appeared at Europort. Designer is Edgar Opitz

of Hamburg. A . B .
