SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE VPP AND DELFT SERIES

Attached are results from the predicted performance of the nine Deif t Series hulls in a variety of sailing conditions. Page 3 and 4 descrfe he nine hulls. The subsequent pages give the condensed results from the velocity prediction program (VP?) for a fleet of 405 boats. This fleet is derived from the nine hull

shapes with different waterline lengths, sail areas and stabilities.

For each of the nine hulls, the table on page 3 shows the principal dimensions, and the body plans are shown on page 4. Note that the dimensional quantities

are for the waterline length of 10 meters (32.81 feet); these must be scaled up or down for the waterline lenths (20,30,40,50,60 feet) for theVPP results which follow. The last seven lines of the table on page 3 are nondimensional ratios which apply irrespective of waterline length.

The test fleet is comprised of these nine hull shapes, and five waterlfne lengths, in conjunction with three values of sail area and three values of te stability, to give a total of (9 X 5 x 3 x 3) = 405 boats. Bas.e sail area, (SO) for each hull is defined in terms of disDiacement by the formula

SO = 1.1 X (DISP)

with displacement in pounds. The three different values of sail area for each hull are S/SO = 0.80, 1.00, and 1.20 . The stability is defined in terms of

.the vertical height of the center of gravity (VCC), with the base value at 2% of Lt'L below the load waterline (CG=-2) ; the two variations are at 5% below (CG=-5),and 1% above (CG=l), the waterline. The sail area S is the gedetric

area of the mainsail and foretriangle, i.e. 1/2(1 XJ + P XE) in terms of the IOR parameters. DISP is the actual displacement in sailing conditions.

For the fleet as defined above, fifteen different sailing conditjons are defined by true wind speeds of 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 knots, and three heading angles (beat, reach, run). The fleet performance In each condition is tabulated on pages 5-19, with the sailing condition defined at the töpof the page. The

characteristics of each boat in the fleet are defined for each model numberN\ (l-9) by the conibinaticns of sail area, VCC, and waterline lengths as shown in the first three columns. Nine columns of boat speeds in knots correspond to hull shapes defined by the model numbers at the top of each column. For a beat,

the velocity shown is the speed made good to windward at the optimum heading angle for each boat. For a reach, the true wind angle is fixed at 1100 , and the

boat speed is shown in knots. For a run, the velocity shown is the speed made good downwind, with the optimum heading angle for tacking downwind.

For example, the first entry on page 5 Is for a beat in 8 knots true wind speed, length = 20 feet, base sail area and stability, and shows a predicted speed made good to windward of 3.566 knots.

The cop1ete results from the VP? are exemplified on page 20, which shows the output for the 20-foot base boat under all sailing conditions. This table is explained in Report 75-17, with the exception of "FLAT " , a new parameter introduced to permit optimum reduction of sail lift coefficient by flatteiiing. Note that the first seventeen rows are at fixed true wind angles (BTW) with 180° a dead run. The last two lines are for true wind angles yielding the optimum speed made good to windward and leeward respectively.
