Natural radioactivity in the thermal waters of the Polish Carpathians
In the last two decades there has been a rapid growth of the utilization thermal waters in Poland. Across the country five geothermal heating plants were founded, at the same time the interest in the utilization thermal waters for recreational purposes increased. Seven thermal spas were built, five of them were located in the Podhale. In accordance with the polish law, mines and spas are obligated to assess the risk of exposure to radiation for employees and people from the general population. The risk is caused by natural radiation. Despite this fact, the natural radioactivity in the thermal waters of Polish Carpathian wasn't investigated. This work is the first attempt to describe this problem in a complex way.
The work presents the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in the Polish Carpathians thermal waters. The analyses of the chemical comnosition of investigated wtares and in situ measurements of temperature, pH and redox potential allowed to find the relationships between the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides and chemical and physical properties of the thermal waters.
For all investigated waters, radiological doses for employees and clients of thermal spas were estimated. Generally the estimated doses show that there is no risk from using thermal waters for recreational purposes.
In thermal waters from Podhale basin, the activity concentrations of radium isotopes (226, 228Ra) increase with the distance from Tatra Mountain. In order to explain this fact the semi-empirical model, which describes factors controlling content of radium isotopes in the thermal waters, was built.
