SUMMARY
Geolog.ical mapping and the publication of large and mediumscale geological. maps is an important statutory duty of the Geological Institute of Poland. The works in this field were regularized in 1957 when an instruction to the preparation of a detailed geological map of Poland in the scales 1: 50 000 and 1: 25000 was iSSUed. At present, after 18 years of its use, numerQus discussions and a great deal of experience, the instruction is being verified. The most important, postulate put forward in the article is the reference of the main elements of the new instruction to the "Instruction 1957". Taking into considerati<1n the purpose 0:( preparing the detailed geological map of Poland, the closed group of its users and. the overall tendencies in various countries, the authors postulate generalization of some strati-graphic-lithological divisions that the either of local or of minor theoretical and practical significance. In the view of the accumulation of vast amount of granulometric data, it is postulated to use them extensively for the preparation of the geological map through verification - on the basis of those data - the results of field macroscopic stu9ies. The introduction of these elements to the characteristics of Quaternary deposits will have a remarkable im-portance for preparing prognoses of the develop-ment of raw material basis, as well as for enginee-ring geology, hydrogeology, spatial plallnin~ etc.
It is also postulated that, in order to achieve better specialization of geology students, the pro-gramme of studies should be revised and instruc-tional materials such as adequate textbooks and sets of training geological maps should be made available to the students.
Efficient preparation and publication of 'large--scale geological· maps is connected with issuing supplementary regulations; on the strength of these regulations the above mentioned works would be a statutory obligation of the whole geological sur-vey, and the Geological Institute would provide methodological supervision. The study curricula, fi-nancial estimates of the field and laboratory works as well as their results verified would be accepted by a specially created interinstitutional committee.
