the 2nd millenium BC. For over half a entury a dis ussion has been going on

overthetaxonomi identi ation( hronologi alandspatial)andgeneti andethni

interpretationofthis ulturalunit.

In thedebate, the1980'sand 1990'smark a signi ant ognitive turn aused

bythegrowthofthe orpusofsour es,theuseofsystemati methodsforthestudy

ofmobilesour esandtheproliferationofregional 14

Cdatings.

The present volume of "Balti -Ponti Studies" is an attempt to register this

breakthrough and a proposal fora new ttingof the Trz inie phenomenoninto

thesynthesisofEarly BronzeAge Europe.The re ordsin lude rudimentsofnew

regional systematizations,foundationsof their hronologiesbased onradio arbon

datings and a dis ussion of theme hanisms of so io- ultural hanges whi h gave

risetotheTrz inie ulturalarea andlater ontributedtoitsdisintegration.

Along-term intentionofthisvolumegiving a multifa etedview oftheee ts

of thesaid ognitive breakthroughis to en ourage a areful s rutinyof the

Reli s of the Trz inie -Sosnytsa type from southern Belarus are usually

re-gardedas a partoftheTrz inie -Komarov-Sosnytsa ommunity. Butwhatismore

ompli ated is the problem of ar haeologi al and ultural attribution of sites in

\the eastern Trz inie " itself to whi h the most part of well-known T

rz inie -So-snytsamaterialsofthePripetsbasinareusuallyreferred.Theterritorialsubdivision

of\theeasternTrz inie " intotheSosnytsaCultureandtheEasternTrz inie

Cul-tureintogroupsorvariantsisstillan itemunderdis ussion.Firstofall,it on erns

theTrz inie -SosnytsasitesinthePripetsbasin[Berezanskaya1972;1982℄.Itisstill

diÆ ult(ifatall possible)tomakea stri t ulturalandgroupidenti ationofthe

Trz inie materials inBelarus.The auseliesnotonlyinthedegreeof

ar haeologi- alexplorationoftheregionbutinthepe uliaritiesof\Trz inie " itself.A ording

dene sharp borders between separate ultures or groups;there are rather wide

transitionalterritories between them"[D¡browski 1972:215℄.Atthesame time, if

welookatpottery,\Trz inie "itselfisaquite on retephenomenoninthesenseof

generaltaxonomyinthePripetsbasin.Inmost ases,it anbeeasily distinguished

fromotherBronzeAgeartifa ts.

Thetraitsmentionedabovearetobesupplementedwiththosewhi hare

Howeverthefeatures pointed outabove are notequally typi alof thewhole

\eastern Trz inie " region. Some of them seldom o ur; others dominate. Some

Belarus onsideringtheterritorial on entrationofthoseindi ationsofpotteryand

payingattentiontoaspe i hara ter ofthegeneti basisandsomegeographi al

pe uliarities of separate Polesie regions together with their traditional dire tions

of onta ts [Kryvaltsevi h1995:3-32℄(Fig. 1). Most of Trz inie -Sosnytsa sites are

marked along the Pripets and the lower rea hes of its right tributaries, between

the Stviga and Haryn in parti ular. As a preliminary, the Turau-Mazyr (Pripets)

group of sites may be distinguished. Almost all of the sites are situated on the

middle and upperPripets, mainly along Pripets itself andin thelower rea hes of

itstributaries (Fig. 1).These sites are similar totheKiev andRovno(Volhynian)

groups. Conta ts with Dnieper Sosnytsa sites traditional to thelower Pripets an

alsobeobserved.

Almost all the sites of the Turau-Mazyr group (TMG) are situated on sand

heightsamongthewidewatermeadowsofPolesie but,insome ases,ontheedges

ofterra es ofsmallrivers. Con entrationof5-6andmore sitesina partofariver

valley is typi al. Almostall thematerials were pi ked upontheheightsor found

in theresult of ex avationsof non-stratied sites. Usual ndsonsettlement were

shardsand inttools.Onsomesiteswe managedtogetfragmentsofseveral pots;

others, at the same time, gave us remnants of 15-60 pots. In some ases we an

provetheexisten eoflong-livedsettlementsandthoseofshortduration.

Distinguishedvarietiesofpotterywerethefollowing:

{ S-prolepotsofmiddlesize(Fig.2:6-8, 10-11);

{ bigpots(Fig.2:1);

{ jars(Fig.2:2);

{ bigjarswithrollers(Fig.2:9).

Besides, vessels with narrow bottoms, bowls and olanders might have been

produ ed. Ornaments were omposed of imprinted and uted lines, pri ks and

\rosaries". De oration of dierent kinds of pri ks and pits is one of the distin t

features of TMG erami s. The populationof thosesettlements used int

arrow--heads, knives, polished axes and si kles (Fig. 2:12-13). Cremation graves might

havebeenpresent[Kryvaltsevi h1995℄.

Againstthegeneralba kgroundofTMGreli s,thesitesofBuhlitskiHutartype

situatedbetweenthelowerrea hesoftheHarynandStvigariversareworthspe ial

attention[Kryvaltsevi h1994:113-135℄(Fig.1).Thelowerrea hesoftheHarynand

theStvigarivers wereopenedtodire t ulturalin uen esfromthesouth-westand

thesouth.Thisregionwas omparativelydenselysaturatedbyTrz inie sites.A tive

olonizationofthisterritory anbe explainedbythefe undityofsoilhere.

TheBronzeAgereli softhenorthernpartofPolesieremaineds ar elystudied

untilre ently. The exploration of thenorthern tributaries ofthe Pripetsgave me

theopportunitytodistinguishtheNorthernPolesie group(NPG)oftheT

(Fig. 3:1-7, 12-15) was found. It orresponds to the Trz inie -Sosnytsa horizon.

There wereS-prolepots(Fig.3:5)andbowls(Fig.3:7);bigjarswerewidelyused

aswell(Fig.3:1,3).The\rosary"ornamentation(Fig.3:2,4,14)predominates.As

arule,thewholeoutersurfa ein luding rimsandbottomswasde orated.

As a preliminary, it an be laimed that there were two main phases in the

water--logged meadowsorontheedgesofriverterra es. There werenotmanyndson

separatesettlements.In aseswhena olle tionwasrepresentedbya omparatively

bignumberofsherdsari hstylisti varietyofwareistra ed(e.g.Aziarnoye1).This

makes it possible to laim thathumanpresen e here was periodi al. We analso

supposethatsu hkindofsettlingiseviden eofasto k-raising hara terofthelo al

e onomy.Thispointofviewmaybe onrmedbythepalinologi alinvestigationsin

Aziarnoye1wherepollenofSilena eal,Renun ulus,Galium,SedumandPolygonum

avi ulare havebeenfound.Pollen of ereals andattendantweeds appeared inthe

transitionalperiodfromSB2toSA1(unpublishedstudiesofG.Simakova).

Probably, NPG sites were a ertain variant of \the eastern Trz inie ". The

development of NPG might have been o urring in ir umstan es dierent from

TMG.Inthenorth, preservationanddevelopmentoftheNeolithi traditionsand

of thelate Middle DnieperCulture was more signi ant than ontheTMG sites.

Besides,somepe uliaritiesofNPGsites ouldappearintheresultoftheir onta ts

notonly with southernandsouth-eastern groupsof populationbutwith northern

onesas well. Natural onditions ontributedto su hrelations | northernPolesie

regionisseparatedfromthePripetsbymarshylowlands.

Thesigni an e of\Trz inie " musthavebeennotsogreat inthe entraland

northern parts of Belarus where we sporadi ally found artifa ts only with some

Trz inie -Sosnytsafeatures.Inthis ase,thereisasensetosupposethatsomeother

ultureor ulturesspreadin entralandnorthernBelarus.AsfaraswesternPolesie

is on erned,theTrz inie reli softhemiddle owoftheBugmighthavebelonged

tothePodlasie-Mazoviagroupofthewestern \Trz inie " [D¡browski1972℄.Some

featureswhi hare hara teristi ofthePodlasie-Mazoviapotteryarefoundfarther

to the east, along the Yaselda and the Bobryk rivers in parti ular. At the same

time thepotterywithtypi al\eastern Trz inie " (andNPGrst ofall)indi ations

ispresentinsome pla esofwesternPolesie(Fig. 4:1-10).

Some s holars interpreted theupperNemen \Trz inie " as an area of

oexi-sten eof\Trz inie " and\Sosnytsa"features [D¡browski1972℄.Inmyopinionwe

an ndhere some features whi h are typi al bothof theNPGandthe

Podlasie--Mazoviagroup(Fig.4:11-16).

TheearliestNPGreli smaybedatedtothepost-MiddleDnieperCulturetime.

The hronologyofdisappearing of thusfar des ribedgroupsis stillunknown

be ause it is very diÆ ult to identify L ate Bronze Age materials in all

Belarus-sian Polesie. Sometimes, they were des ribed as the sites of the L ebedovka type

BronzeAgetothenalphaseofNPGandTMGinthePripetsbasin.Inthis ase,

we must all thiskind ofsitesa prede essorof theMilahrad Cultureof theEarly

IronAge.Western Polesie and theupperNemen basinmay betheregions where

thewesternandtheeasternTrz inie ulturaltraditionsdeveloped.Inthenorthern

part of Polesie, \the eastern Trz inie " was revealed in the form of a distin tive

peripheralNPG. TMGdevelopedunderthea tivein uen e oftheSouthandthe

South-East(theKievandRovnoorVolhyniagroups).

THEORIGINS

Investigators usedto onsider that \the eastern Trz inie " was rootedin the

stratumofthelo alpre-Trz inie ulturesemphasizingtheleadingroleinitsgenesis

oftheCordedWareCultures(theMiddleDnieperCulture,theGorodok-Zdolbitsa

Culture,theStrzy»owCulture,theCorded-Ware groupsof Polesie andtheUpper

Nemen). Sometimes, s holars atta h spe ial importan e to a onsiderable part of

thelo alNeolithi (forestzone) ulturesinthispro ess.

In general, there'sa sense in agreeing thatthe Neolithi (forestzone)

ultu-resandtheepi-CordedWare Culture ir le were thebasi sour esof Trz inie in

southernBelarus.However,thisopinionrequiresamore pre isedenitionand

de-velopment.Thelatestmaterialmakesitpossibletoamplifyourviewofthegenesis

of\theeastern Trz inie ".

Aziarnoye, site 1 (NPG) has given a lot of material for the understanding

of the transformationof the late Middle Dnieper Culture phase pottery intothe

Trz inie -Sosnytsahorizonpottery.Thereare twotypesofthe erami omplexin

Aziarnoye1.

Type1(\re- lay pottery")(Fig.5).BigS-prolepotswithroundedorslanted

rims andnarrow bottomsdominate. It is also ne essary to pay attention to some

S-prolepotsandjarswiththi ken,slantedorroundedrims.ThiskindofTrz inie

feature mighthave been pre ededby thelo al MiddleDnieper Culture tradition

of so alled \ ollar pottery" [Kryvaltsevi h1988:75-88℄.The shardsof twopots of

type1weredated,a ordingtotheresultsofsootanalysisby 14

Cmethod(Table1).

of the Middle Dnieper Culture, whi h he dated as early as the 18th {15th

en-turies onv. BC. I.I. Artemenko saw in it some indi ations of \arising Sosnytsa".

The rsttype of pottery was found onother sitesof thePripets basin

[Kry-valtsevi h 1994:122-132℄, onthe Upper Dnieper, along the left tributaries of the

UpperNemen (Fig.6).Thiskindof\ ordedware" indi ations bearsalotoflo al

Neolithi features.

I.I.Artemenkowasrightwhenheassertedthatthepresen eofmanyNeolithi

elements wasone ofthespe ial features ofthelate phaseoftheMiddle Dnieper

Culture. In his view, it means that arrived \ orded ware" population assimilated

the lo al Neolithi inhabitans. In pre-Trz inie time or in the late phase of the

MiddleDnieperCulture,ana tiveintera tionbetweenthe ulturesofthesurvived

Neolithi andtheMiddleDnieper ouldtakepla e.

AsforAziarnoye1,theanalysisofthepotterybringsustothe on lusionthat

the Trz inie -Sosnytsa period su eeded the Middle Dnieper Culture. Instead of

re lay pottery, te hnologyof erami s with mineral breakage appeared. Spe i

potterywithmineralbreakageisdenedastype2.Thiskindofwareistypi alofthe

Trz inie -Sosnytsahorizon (NPG).The earliest part ofthese ond typeof pottery

bears a lot of features of type 1. In sear h of all-embra ing analogies we should

pay attention to settlement Isakovka (Ukraine) where the Middle Dnieper

Cul-ture omponentshavebeenpreserved well[Berezanskaya,Okhrimenko,Piasetskyi

1987:52-53℄(Fig. 6:17-26).

Con erningtheproto-Trz inie period,Belarusianar haeologistsusually

distin-guish two spe i groupsof theCorded Ware ir le: of Polesie and of theupper

Nemen.Inmyopinion,however, thesegroupsarenotsomu h \CordedWare

ho-rizon"itselfbut a phenomenonformedbythree main omponents| theCorded

Ware Culture,theGlobularAmphoraCultureandtheNemenCulture.

Withregard tothe\ ordedware" omponent,Ishouldlike tonotethatthere

are some features geneti ally onne ted with the Middle Dnieper Culture in the

Nemenbasin(possiblyonlyinitssouth-easternpart),westernPolesie(forexample,

parts of western Polesie. But at the same time, a lot of \southern" (Volhynian)

features areobservedhere(forexample, theStrzy»ówCulture).

Thus\Trz inie " ouldhavebeenpre ededbyastageof ompli atedrelations

betweenthethreemain ulturaltraditions|CordedWare,GlobularAmphoraand

Nemen. Itisstill diÆ ulttoreveal thenatureanddynami s of thoserelations, or

thesigni an eofea hofthetheir omponents.Intheresultoftheseintera tions,

thelo al\Trz inie ", withitsdistin tivenature,appeared.

In theneighboring part of Poland, simultaneously,su h intera tionsbetween

dierent ultural traditions resulted in so alled Linin group and, nally, in

ap-pearing of Podlasie-Mazovia \Trz inie " whi h ontinued in the western part of

Belarus (areaofthelate Nemen Culture).

Here,onemore onditionisalsoworthpayingattention.The intmining

om-plexofKrasnayeSialonearVaukavyskontheRosriveriswidelyknown.A ording

to M. Cherniavski, therstminers of Krasnaye Sialo were the representatives of

theGlobularAmphoraCulture.However,themostintensive intmininghere was

laun hed in theBronze Age [Cherniavski, Kudrashou,Lipni kaya 1996:85-86).In

her publi ation, N. Gurina gives radio arbon dates of some mines. Almostall of

them fallonthe periodfrom 1640to 1240 onv.BC [Gurina1976:127℄.Itisalso

knownthatatthattime, intwasa tivelyextra tedandpro essedinVolhynia.This

may be eviden e of onservation ofold\ int"traditions, whi hwere sostrongin

thoseareas earlier.

So,themain on lusionsarethefollowing.\Trz inie "ofthePripetsbasinarose

mainlyonthebasisoflo al ulturesandgroupsdevelopedherebefore.Coexisten e

ofanumberoftraditionshereintheproto-Trz inie periodisquitepossible.L o al

\Trz inie " mightbeapro essofintegrationofdierent ultural omponents.
