1 Warm-up
Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 5 minutes
Teacher says: My name’s (Barbara). He/She turns to a student at the first desk and pointing at him says: His name’s (Peter). Then teacher asks the student to do the same, i.e. say: My name’s (Peter). Her name’s (Kate) – pointing to the next student. The same is repeated around the classroom, until the last student finishes with pointing to the teacher.
2 Main stage
2.1. Introduction of the target language –presentation Interaction forms: whole class
Duration: 15 minutes
Teacher tells students that they will see a presentation where someone describes his/her family. The first part of the presentation (slides 1–6) is played once through. Then, the
2
presentation (slides 1–6 again) is shown for the second time, and now students are asked to repeat the whole sentences.
Now, teacher should show the second part of the presentation (with key words only, slides 7–12), this time pausing at each slide. Students should use the information on the slides to produce full sentences. This should be drilled around the class.
2.2. Target language practice – communication exercise Interaction forms: pairwork
Duration: 10 minutes
Students work in pairs. Each pair is given a set of worksheets (Family Tree), A for one student and B for the other. Students are told to imagine that they are introducing their family members to each other. Each of them has information about different people. In turns, they have to give the information they have on their worksheet, in full sentences, e.g. This is my grandfather. His name is Philip. He’s 70. He’s a doctor. The other student has to write the information down on his/her worksheet.
Teacher monitors, helps students and takes notice of any errors to address at the end of the activity. If students are having difficulties in carrying out the task, teacher can write model sentences on the board.
Answers (complete tree, left to right):
Philip (70, doctor), Betty (63, teacher), Peter (64, retired), Emma (64, retired);
John (44, engineer), Natalie (43, dentist);
Me (13, student), Daniel (9, student), Ann (20, university student)
2.3. Target language practice – personalization Interaction forms: small groups
Duration: 10 minutes
Before the lesson teacher should ask students to bring in family photographs. Now, students will talk about people in the photos, introducing them, e.g. This is my mother. Her name’s Sylwia. She’s 43. She’s a nurse.
Teacher monitors and helps.
3 Closing stage
Interaction forms: whole class
3
Duration: 5 minutes
Teacher concludes the lesson by eliciting a few descriptions of family members (from stronger students) in open class.
For homework, students are asked to briefly describe their immediate family.
