AN
INVESTIGATION INTO THELEVEL
OF EXTROVERSION, LOCUS OF CONTROLAND
GENDER ON LISTENINGAND
READING PROFICIENCYIN
SECONDLANGUAGE ACQUISITION
It
seemsthat in the
backgroundof the
present dissertation, thereis an
idea to investigate the reasonswhy
some people are more successfulin
learning a foreign language than others. Althoughthe efforl to
studyindividual
learner differencesis not
new, every contribution deserves appreciation, particularly with
regardto the fact
thatevery
study focuseson different
variablesand on different
target groups. As far as this project
is concerned,it
offers an added value by the method usedby
its author.All
gathered data and observations are regularly confrontedwith
the findingsof
other researchers that makes an overall picture even more complete andconvincing.
From this pointof
view, the submitted dissertation may be perceived asa
significant contributionto the
continued searchfbr
an increase in the efficiency of the foreign language teaching-learning process. The ambition of this project's author is to investigate whether three carefully selected variables have impact on the levels of proficiency of higher education students and how they relate
to
each other. The variables chosenfor
investigation are gender, levelof
extroversion and locusof
control (LOC). In this respect this study is unique and original, especiallywith
regard
to
LOC. Clearly stated hypotheses and research questions are subjectof
examinationthrough investigating two primary language skills, namely reading and
listening comprehension.The structure
of
thetext
correspondswith the
set objectives and the headingsof
individual subchapters respect a logical progression going from general to more specific. Thetext is
presentedwith
considerable precisionin
formulating ideas, either referredto
othersources or those of the author. Every section of the text is introduced
with
clearly formulated goals and ended with summaizingideas.Starting
from
the taxonomy used throughout thework
presentedin
ChapterI,
the readeris
introducedto
the relevant contextby
looking at the developmentsin
thefield of
second language acquisition,
and
analyzingthe
terms gender, extroversionand
locusof
control- The next
subchapters devotedto
language acquisition and theoriesof SLA
areelaborated very precisely and extensively referring to a great number of sources. This range
of
information, however, is at the expense of readability and lucidity and
it
makes an impression of a summary of a larger analyticalwork. With regard to the amount of information presented, this part ofthe text requires from the reader adequate concentration.More

dealingwith
the individual factors influencing SLA, althoughthe
scopeof the
section includesthe
areaswhich
arenot directly
relatedto
the present study' This, however, is done on pu{posewith
regard to the complex nature oJ'these interrelated influences(p.3a). The author
startswith
learners'social
backgrounds that undoubtedly may influence their foreign language outcomesin
additionto
the traditionally mentioned cross-linguisticinfluences. This
subsectionis followed by an extensive
examination of
psychological, cognitive and psychical influences. Here the
author again
documents her
admirable deep knowledge of the
research outcomes in such
areas as
motivation,
attitude,
anxiety,risklaking, self-fficacy, locus of control
and personality.various
authors are quoted, their views reconsidered and the reader thus receives a usefuloverview of the
developmentsand
trendsin the
respective areas.All the information
presented in
the given chapter indicates that the author of
this dissertation is more than well
oriented in
the subject matter and has an ability to
draw inescapable conclusions from
her
study.
Chapter 3 constitutes the core
of
the project asit
outlines the resultsof
the author,s empirical study carried out on a groupof
university studentsof
English. The chapter staftswith
theoretical assumptions followedby
research questions and hypotheses. The author.s intention isto find
outif
there is a significant differencein
performance between introverts and extrovertsin
reading and listening comprehension exercises,while
the issuesof
gender and the orientation of locus of control are the mediating variables. The main and also specific questions are the basis for the formulation of hypotheses. The
following
descriptionof
the research methodology meets the highest possible standards'Every detail of
theproject is
carefully thought-out, includingthe
selectionof project participants and
research instruments,and the
procedureused. The
selected instrumentarium and the statistical methodology aswell
as the procedure (consistingof
the quantitative and qualitative analyses) guarantee that the research results may be accepted without reservations' To make the results of the analysis even more valid, the author decided to carry out weli-structured interviewswith
15 selected project participants.The
conclusions drawnfrom the study
are somewhat surprisingas all the
three hypotheses proposed at the beginning of the project have been disapproved. They indicate thatthere are
no
differencesin
achievement between males and females (at least asfar
as the Englishphilology
students are concerned);the
performanceof individual
learnersat
the highest level is not influenced by levelof
extroversion or locusof
control; or that the people who have some teaching experiencewith
English have higher scores than those who do not have' Many other observations and findings are presented in the present work aswell
as hintsfor further
research'In this
contextthe following
questionmay be
addressedto
the dissertation author.Is it
possibleto identify
any findings that may be appliedto
other less homogeneous groups of English language learners? On the
whole,the
authorof this
dissertation has gathered and presenteda lot of
valuable information on the many aspects
of
learner differences; she developed and tested awell-elaborated
method of investigating the factors that could have influence on
the
profrciency level of the target group learners of English. An extensive and deep analytic study
of
numerous relevant sources, which preceded the proper design and application, is aproof
that the present project is an important contribution to the current state
of
affairs. The results obtained may be beneficialfor SLA
specialists andfor all
thosewho
intendto
carry out further research in the given area.Concluding comments: The doctoral dissertation of mgr Magda Trinder
is undoubtedly a well-written text documentingits
author's expertise and a very conscientious approachto
researchwork. The
objectives statedin the introduction have
been met satisfactorily andwith
a high degree of professionalism. The material presented may serve as a point of departure for fuither research and new ambitious projects.I
have no hesitation to acceptit
as a doctoral dissertation and to recommendit
for the final procedure.I
suggest to grant a distinction for the submitted work.t!
