4th Meeting of the Petrologic Group of the Polish Mineralogical Society, Pokrzywna, October 17-19,1997

The fourth meeting of the Petrologic Group of the Polish Mineralogical Society was held in Pokrzywna, near Gtuchoiazy, Eastern Sudetes, on October 17-19, 1997. The Petrologic Group was founded by Prof. Alfred Majerowicz in 1994, and since then the chairperson has been Jacek Puziewicz, both from the Univer- sity of Wroclaw. The yearly autumn meetings of the Group have become the best review of current petrologic research in Poland.

Each meeting is accompanied by thematic sessions on various problems.

The Pokrzywna Meeting session was devoted to the integra- tion of petrologic and tectonic research, with an aim towards the reconstruction of the evolution of metamorphic complexes. The first two talks, "Geothermobarometry in polymetamorphic rocks: examples, applications and limitations" by Ryszard Kryza, and "Introduction to the geology of the Eastern Sudetes and the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif" by Marlena Kalinska and Stanislaw Mazur, provided a general introduction to this ses-

sion. The five other presentations, as well as the field-trip, were prepared by Jacek Puziewicz and co-workers, and presented ex- amples from the border area between the Western and Eastern Sudetes in the Fore-Sudetic Block. The significant number of non-petrologists participating in the session indicated the impor- tance of the problems discussed.

The regular part of the session covered a broad range of vari- ous aspects of petrology. Many good presentations, both talks and posters, mostly by young scientists, suggested that the inter- est in basic petrologic research is not diminishing.

During the session, a special meeting of the Polish Minera- logical Society was arranged at which Professor Alfred Majero- wicz was granted the title of "Honourary Member of the Polish Mineralogical Society" by Professor Marian Banas, the President of the Society. The scientific and social sides of the meeting to- gether made it as successful as the former three.

3rd Meeting of the Czech Tectonic Studies Group (Ceska Tektonicka Skupina), Mala Upa, Czech Karkonosze Mts, April 15-19,1998

The third meeting of the Czech Tectonic Studies Group (Ceska Tektonicka Skupina) took place in Mala Upa in the Czech Karkonosze Mts on April 15-19, 1998. Mala Upa is lo- cated at Okraj Pass, just at the Czech-Polish border. This accesi- ble location allowed a large number of Czech, Slovak and Polish geologists to attend the meeting. Over twenty of the hundred participants came from Poland. Two guest lectures were given:

"High-pressure low-temperature metamorphism in the Western Sudetes: tectonic implications" by Ryszard Kryza, and "Variscan thrusting and extensional collapse in the Karkonosze-Izera Mas- sif, Western Sudetes: the tectonic, sedimentary and magmatic re- cords" by Stanssiaw Mazur. The first day of the field trip was guided by the guest speakers and Pawei Aleksandrowski, all from the University of Wroclaw. They led the participants to localities on Polish territory and presented the most important problems of the metamorphic (including blueschist facies) and structural evolution of the Eastern Karkonosze and Gory Kaczawskie Mts.

The second morning trip was guided by Frantisek Patocka and Jmdrich Hladil, both of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, and was devoted to selected geological and petrological problems of the Eastern Karkonosze Mts.

The meeting demonstrated an increasing co-operation be- tween Polish and Czech geologists, especially those working in the area of the Sudetes and other parts of the Bohemian Massif.

The lectures and posters covered a broad range of problems, but dominantly those connected to crystalline rocks. Many of the presentations concentrated on the metamorphic-petrologic as- pects of crystalline complexes. The perfect organization by Mar- tin Svojtka of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, the high-quality scientific presentations, the early-spring mountain air and the Czech beer contributed greatly to the suc- cess of the meeting.
