Termites are the high-rise builders of the bug world, with nests that can stretch several meters towards the sky. Thousands of the insects work together to construct an interconnected network of chambers and tunnels from excavated soil for a colony to live in.
Now researchers have developed a model that shows how termites, aware only of their immediate vicinity, can build such large-scale, functional structures without a blueprint. The authors suggest the same model could be used to control and direct an army of efficient robotic builders without central supervision.

Helicobacter
The ulcer-causing H. pylori is one of the few organisms that can survive in the highly acidic environment of the stomach. It does so by secreting chemicals that neutralize the acid in the region around it. Recently, researchers discovered that this chemical buffer zone also helps the organism swim through the gel-like mucus covering the
stomach lining. When neutralized, the mucus becomes less viscous as well as less elastic.
Jak pływają bakterie?
Bacteria propulsion can be understood as the interplay of elastic forces in the flagellum and viscous resistance from the fluid. Studies of bacteria motion have often assumed a simplified model in which only short-range viscous forces are included. However, recent experiments have shown that long-range hydrodynamic interactions occur between flows produced by different parts of a flagellum.

Jak pływają bakterie?
To develop a more accurate model, Khalid Jawed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, and his colleagues performed experiments on 20-centimeter-long rods molded out of rubber into different helical shapes
to mimic flagella. They then rotated the rods in a viscous fluid (glycerin) at various speeds.
Jak pływają bakterie?
The researchers’ model—which accounted for long-range hydrodynamics—
showed that the propulsive force increases with rotation speed but drops off suddenly once buckling occurs.

Kinetyzyna – atomowy piechur
Kinesin’s main role is in transporting large proteins and vesicles along thin polymers, called microtubules, that form a “road network” within a cell. The motor molecule has two leg-like appendages that “walk” along the road. The “feet” of the kinesin legs can bind and unbind from microtubule sites that repeat every 8 nanometers.

Kinetyzyna – atomowy piechur
Mechanism of kinesin-1 stepping [24]. The motor spends most of the time in the ATP-waiting state, 1. Binding of ATP to the MT-bound motor domain changes its conformation, enhancing the orientational freedom of the neck linker. The 1→2 reaction is reversible. As long as the MT-bound motor domain is in the ATP-bound state, the tethered domain can reach the subsequent binding site on the MT and release ADP. This movement, realized by diffusion, is constrained by viscosity and tension arising in the neck linker. When ATP is hydrolyzed, the MT-bound domain detaches from the MT, becoming the tethered one (3→1).

Some fish, including rays, skates and sharks, can sense electric fields as small as 5 nV/cm, which allows them to detect muscle contractions and other physiological activity in potential prey. They sense the fields using arrays of electrosensory organs in their skin called ampullae of Lorenzi (AoL). An individual AoL comprises a canal that is filled with a jelly-like substance that comes into contact with the external environment via a pore in the creature's skin. The inner end of the canal terminates in a sac (or "alveolus") containing cells that transmit electrical signals from the jelly to the fish's nervous system.
Czy komety przyniosły życie na Ziemię?
The amino acid glycine has been discovered in the comet 67P/Churyumov–
Gerasimenko, suggesting that the ingredients for early life may have been delivered to Earth by comets, rather than being created on our planet. More intriguingly, it also suggests similar comets could also have delivered life elsewhere in the universe – an encouraging sign for those looking for life on other planets

Ultrasonografia
The frequencies used for medical imaging are generally in the range of 1 to
18 MHz. Higher frequencies have a correspondingly smaller wavelength, and can be used to make sonograms with smaller details. However, the attenuation of the sound wave is increased at higher frequencies, so in order to have better
penetration of deeper tissues, a lower frequency (3–5 MHz) is used.

Rezonans magnetyczny
Nadzwyczajna czułość MRI do obrazowania tkanek miękkich, czyli zawierających dużo wody, wynika ze szczegolnych własności magnetycznych jądra atomu wodoru (czyli protonu).

Diagnostyka (i terapia) fotodynamiczna:
