Scheeps ontwerp

3
RO-RO CARGO
RO-RO PASS. FERRIES
Extra D.B hoogte maakt
het schip duidelijk nog veel veiliger. Havenkosten gebaseerd op GT werken
dit tegen.
6
BULKCARRIER
ver-gaan. (scheuren in spant knieën - schuifspanning in huid)
- Dubbelwandige zijden, geconserveerd ais W.B.
juiste grenzen moet blijven.
Dit ontwerp krijgt een grotere Gross Tonnage

VOORSTEL BEREKENING HAVENKOSTEN
INLEIDING
moest afstaan
Na een periode "wat is laadruimte"?
- shelterdeckers "open" of "closed"? is
(Loa x B x Holte) x Coëfficiënt + alles erop.
"SAFETY OF LIFE AT SEA".
dek.
(RAHOLA)
De kritische hoek is waarbij:
- de lading gaat schuiven
- de trailers dreigen te kantelen
- het water in het gangboord loopt
- luiken onder water komen
- water via openingen binnendringt
in ruimen, bak en kampanje
N.B.
GM = 1.5 m in plaats van de goed beproefde - 75 cm (21/2').
periode. Stel B = 19.6 m dan is:
T
0.8 B
0.8 * 19.6
- 12 a 13 sec.
1.23
kapseizen

OThe container feeder
In case the shipowner remains confronted with the existing GT-measurement, related to port and
canal dues ( and in Holland the number of crew members), the owner always will try to minimise
the GT below the tonnage-step.
The GT-measurernent is enclosing the vessel with superstructure like a
'vaist
coat
and the minimising action ends with a minimum-freeboard hull, which is caracterized by
minimum reserve-buoyancy and minimum sea keeping-ability for the sea farer.
We are now comparing two designs, of same L.B.T. and same displacement.
On the right-hand side we increased the depth by one container and it became clear that
the range of stability did increase substantially and the ship turned out to be
more
seaworthy.

On these relatively small vessels, crew costs are rather dominant. 9

crew.
-
Therefore, the owner will limit his vessel up to a gross tonnage-crew-criterium
Ships built to these criteria will show vessels:
Length
Defined by length of containerbay's + engineroom + forécastle;
relatively high speed also requires a minimum length.
Breadth
A large beam is creating a large initial stability and allows for
a huge
deckload: for example 6 containers across and at least 4 tiers high.
Depth
The depth will be minimal in order not to exceed the tonnage-criterium.
The freeboard is also kept minimal according to the rules and the draft
should of course deliver the required deadweight.
Stability range.
The minimum-freeboard and wide-beam are giving a small angle of heel. where
the deck is immersing.
Beyond this angle the buoyancy, to keep the ship upright, will diminish rapidly.
However stability requirements of the Government are a asking for a minimum
stability range and a certain surface of the stability heel curve.
The wide beam-low freeboard ships can fulfill these requirements only if they are
extremely stable in the initial stage of heel (the so called metacentric height: GM
has to be rather high).
The result is a stiff vessel with jerking motions in a seaway.
Many of these low freeboard-ships can be seen rolling heavily in beam seas in
resonance with the wave period.
At BF 8 to 9 the wave period is between 9 and
1 3 seconds and the natural
rolling period of a stiff vessel is within this range.
In case of a deckload of 4 to 5 tiers of containers and a rolling period of 9 to 1 3
seconds, the rolling acceleration in in range of 0,5 to 0,6 g and forces in
lashings are higher.
Twistlocks at all 4 cornerfittings should be easily accessable and checked
regularly.
Twistlocks-only should allow for a total stackweight of 40 ton max.
In case of more weight and forecasts or bad weather, extra cross lashings are to
be applied: diagonal rods + turnbuckles.
Steelwire and normal chains are not suitable because of deformation under load.
Breaking lashings, loss of containers, listing vessel and capsize is quite possible.
Seamanship is needed where the shipdesign fails. Speed reduction,
-changing course- heave to.
Designing the vessel with more depth, with one container in hull extra, and one
container less on covers, would create a more seaworthy ship, characterized
with a wide range stability curve and moderated GM. Floating like a gulf on the
waves, see fig.
However, because of extra gross tonnage and extra crewcosts, these better
ships will not be built unless the relation GTcrew is abandoned.

in-creasingly sophisticated trans-portation system, the
newly-delivered Bell Adv leads a
three-ship senes which will
raise route capacity and cargo
carrying versatility.
The commitments to the trio
of 300 teu newbuildings are
part of a wider developmental strategy. This includes a
trans-fer to a considerably larger.
multi-modal terminal within
the port of Rotterdam, further
contracts for containers, and
in-vestments in equipment to
support its block train services
through the Channel Tunnel.
The 3,500 dwt Bell Ady re-presents the latest technology
in terms of shortsea
contai-ner/feedership
design, and is
well-suited to use on the
intensively operated shortsea
lattice
formed by
the nineservices linking terminals in
beland., the UK, the northwest
Continent and Spain.
Although incorporating
re-markably wide hold access, the
new class confirms the
compa-ny's continued belief in
hatched vessels,
notwithstand-ing the operatnotwithstand-ing success of the

In fact,
the charter
agree-ments relating to the Bell Ady
type were followed last autumn
by a long-term deal covering a

The novel, Japanese-built
hatchiess carriers have
achieved significant savings in
turnroimd time and cargo
handling costs. But the decision
to opt for a new series of more conventional ships rather than
further hatchiess tonnage
re-flected the charter rateimplica-tions of the latter's higher
capital cost.
The new Bell Adv series
of-fers good performance
in aturnround context, affording
complementarity with the
no-vel, Japanese-built open-hold
vessels. Nonetheless, Bell
Lines is understood to be
giving further consideration to
the hatchiess concept. A
Dutch-developed design is under
evaluation.

vessels. Thus, it
is expected
that fleet strength is expected tobe unchanged at 13 by the end of this year, but with a growth
in absolute capacity
corre-sponding to an extra ship, and
with a further mcrease in cargo carrying versatility.
Introduction of the Bel! Ady
to North Sea and Irish
Conti-nental routes has enabled the
174 tau Rosita Maria to be
re-leased from charter employ.
Second-of-class Bell .4srrorr
will replace another chartered
unit, the 230 tau Jano., while
Bell Atlas is scheduled to
supersede the 168 tau Beil
Ranger in December.
The 378 tau near-harchiess

se-cured for three years last
aut-umn from the Waterford
shipmanagement and owning
company Euro Container

168 tau
Bell Racer to

BELL ADYShip reaffirms German skills
TI-LE latest newbuilding addi- tion to Bell Lines' fleet reaf-firms German 10WCSS and commimitmnent in the shortsea containemship field.Owned by lierniann
Sehe-pers. a member of the vibrant small-ship community in l-bren on Ems, the 3,5(X) dwt Bell Ady is the lead unit in a series of three ships entrusted to Elbe- werft
Boizenburg. The deal
was brokered by Eric Stuewe Schiffahris, the Hamburg firm.
Stuewe played a pivotal role
in an earlier, key stage iii the development nf the Bell fleet, when the five 262 teu Amazone- class vessels were phased into service. Delivered by the Sietas yard in 1988-89 to Altesland- domiciled owners, the ships en- capsulated at the time the latest thinking mn
feedership design
technology.
The Amazone type provided
the design reference point lòr the
latest
series.
Second-of-class Bell Asiron, which is ex- pected (o follow lie/I Ady into service by May, will he owned by German family
interests,
thought by industry sources to be

The third newbtmilding in the
Boizenburg programme is due to be commissioned in Dccciii- ber as the Bell
has a
British owning background via, Vogt & Maguire, the London company, which owns the 18- year-old Bell Ranger.
Bell Ady has considerable
significance
for
the
smaller-ship specialists within Meek- lenburg-Vorpommern's
re-emergent shipbuilding indusiry.
She is the first example of
Elbewerft's EWB300 design formulated at Boizenburg. The type offers all the attributes of Bell's Amazone class but with a higher payload, greater box- carrying flexibility, and a half- knot gain in speed.
Elbewerft is well known for
a range of fishing vessel types, as well as for inland cargo ves- sels and
passengerships de-signed for the Russian
waterway system. lt broke into the shortsea market with the 3,850
dwt
Bremer
Uranus,
delivered in February 1993 to Briese Schiffahrts of Emden.
New impetus was given to
its drive into the feeder contai- nership
sector
through
the
purchase of the yard by the Pe- tram Group of Bremerhaven and Brake. As a result of its commercial
reorientation,
vessels of the EWB300 type and a larger 400 teu version occupy berth capacity through this year and early next year.
Despite constraints imposed
by a location on the River Elbe 60 km east of Hamburg, the yard is contemplating building vessels up
to 600 teLi.
Air-draught considerations necessi- tate completion of sea-going tonnage nearer the
sea. The
Bell Adv project entailed fluìai
work in Bremerhaven by the Petram Group, whose interests include MWB Motorenwerke Bremerhaven,
the
building,
ship conversion, repair and en- ineering firm.
ie cargo carrying
cxiii
ity to which Bell attaches such importance has been takèn to a new level in the Bell Ad)'. She incorporates
the
small
free-board, high hatch coamings and
TE
poop-mounted super-structure that characterise today's optimised, shortsea feeder carrier.
Her box transporting
versa-lihity arises to a large extent from the considerable propor- tional weighting given to deck stowage. Of the total 300 teu potential intake, 228 teu stow positions are weatherdeck slots. The homogeneous load factor at a 14-tonne rating is 190 teu.
With a remarkable 76% of
the design's total box rating ac- counted for by "above decks" slots, the vessel's gross mea- surement is less than that of the preceding Amazone, despite a 38
teu higher capacity and marginally greater all-up deimchwei 'ht. e orwar mate measures
12.6 x 10.6 m, but the number 2 hatchway extends for 38.10 ni and accounts for 13.2 m of the 16.2 mn hull breadth. The larger opening is closed by six folding covers,
four stowing
for'd and two aft. Boxes can also be stowed on number 2's
Edited by DAVID TINSLEY,
hatchcovers, and on the deck space over the engine room, to a level of four tiers.
The nature of the number 2
hatchcover, in pamtictmlar, com- bined with the long, wide-hold area below, make the
vessel
suitable
for
the transport of
24.5 ft, 30 ft, 45 ft and 49 ft units as well as 9 ft 6 in-high boxes, standard 20 ft
contai-ners, 40 ft reefer units and the Europallet-diniensioned 40
ft boxes. The latter category, pioneered in 1987 by the company's 2.5 ni pallet-wide
425 box, has become a key part
of Bell's
operations,
to
the
extent that standard 40 ft units have been wholly replaced by the newer designs.
The cargo carrying
confi-guration of the latest class of vessel also reflects the trade's increasing receptivity to the 30 ft top loading bulk unit intro- dtmced by the carrier.
'Flic
hatch
arrangements
should promote turnround effi- ciency and obviate the need for container restowing. These at- tributes promise to make the Bell
Ady class inure compatible with the near-hatchless Bell Pioneer type than other,
conventionally-hatched Lmnits in the Bell fleet.
The
specification
for
the
new breed called for a laden speed of about 14.5 knots in fair sea conditions, compared with
the
13.5
to
14
knots
achieved by the Type 122s.
The earlier series
contribu-ted to improvements in freight transit times on Bell's various services. More important, the design's sustainable speed
mn
bad weather was higher than older, smaller capacity vessels. In the saine way, the faster speed of the Bell Ady is scemi as ami
attribute mainly in the context of better ensuring
service dependability than as a way to cut sea transit times. The power and speed reserve will better allow schedules to be made up if weather or other factors cause delays.
In the case of the first of the
EWB300 class
from
Boizen-burg, the propulsive power in- stallation
is
an eight-cylinder
M453C engine manufactured in the Federal Repuhic by Deutz MWM. The medium-speed unit is
rated at 2,940 kW at 6(X) rev/main, driving a variable pitch propeller through re-duction gearing.
Equivalent-bore, but different designs of prime
mover have been specified for the subsequent
vessels chartered by Bell Lines.
While Bell Astron will
re-ceive MAN B&W's 32/40 de- sign, the most recent additiumi to MAN B&W's family of four- stroke engines, i/t'il Atlas is to be fitted with an eight-cylinder M32 unit from Deutz MWM.
Unveiled about
12 months
ago, the more powerful M32 is seen as the long termo replace- ment for the M453C type.
