AIMS AND SCOPE

The Journal of Engineering for tlie Maritime Environment provides a forum for engineers from a variety of disciplines with a common interest in the design, production, and operaUon of engineering artefacts for the maritime environment. The unique attributes ofthe Journal are:

• It straddles the traditional boundaries of naval architecture, marine engineering, ofJ'shore ocean engineering, coastal engineering and port engineering.

• Advances in new techniques involving cross-disciplinary issues will be encouraged.

• Focus will be on tlie technology and underpinning sciences that enable better exploitation of the maritime environment. The Journal addresses the engineering artefact as a system in itself and as a component or facilitator of a larger goal, e.g. the cargo transport chain, the fisheries chain or the oil and mineral wealth exploration chain. It focuses on scientific and mathematical principles underpinning the design, fabrication, operation and disposal of engineering artefacts relevant in a maritime context. Papers will deal with the interpretation, understanding and modelling of physical and other phenomena involved in the interaction of solid objects writh a Huid environment. Individual articles should reflect the interdisciplinary nature and approach of the Journal.

Topics include:

• Engineering sciences: structural response; powering, propulsion, and load response; systein dyiiamics, simulation, and control; materials' structure and fluid structure interaction; martronics

• Technologies: information technology; computation technology; production technology; design methodology

• Societal issues: safety engineering; human factors and ergonomics; environmental engineering; engineering economics; management science

• Mathematical discipUnes: variational calcidus and numerical modelling; operational research; statistics; solid surface modelling.
