Man'98, the first Symposium and Workshop on Forces Acling on a Mantuuvring Vessel, was
organised by the Bassin d'essais des Carènes, in Val de Reuil France. Il will be rcnicnibcrcd as the first
international conference held at the Bassin since it moved to Val de Reuil.
This conference, the symposium part, was created in order lo provide a dedicated forum for the
presentaüon and discussion of recent numerical and experimental work on ilie esiimaiion of hydrodynamic
forces and their integration in manoeuvring models. The need for such a conference was felt because of the
wealth of on-going developmems in numerical, as well as experimental methods, which have been made to a
large extent, to address the requirements of the IMO regulations for (he manceuvrabiliiy of ships.
The need for this conference, the workshop part, came out of the 22nd ITTC Manoeuvring
Committee's task to promote the generation of reference, benchmark data in the field of manoeuvrability
This effort, based on the Esso Osaka hull form, was initiated after the Committee received a very
encouraging response to a survey of jwtential research groups interested in participating in this study. On
this basis, a CAD definition of the hull form and a number of conditions were ideniified for which the forces
on the Esso Osaka had to be determined. This meeting was an opportunity for researchers to present the
results of on-going benchmark work. It is hoped that further work on this matter will be performed and
presented in ftiture conferences. The importance of benchmark data will be further emphasised in the report
ofthe 22nd ITTC Manoeuvring Committee.
Accordingly, the conference and the proceedings are organised in four parts :
Numerical Techniques
Experimental Techniques
Esso Osaka
Forces and Simulations (1&2)
This book has been produced directly from the manuscripts of the authors. It also contains, following
each manuscnpt, the discussions from the participants to the authors, as well as the replies from the authors
It is available firom the Bassin d'essais des carènes. The opinions expressed herein arc those ofthe authors
and do not necessarily coincide with those ofthe editor.
The editor and the organizers wish to thank all the authors for preparing their manuscripts and sharing
with the ship manoeuvring communi ty the results of their work.
