SUMMARIES OF ARTICLES

Nature Protection in the Programmes of Elementary and Secondary Schools. — Gy ian Radomski.

In ' co n ju n c tio n w ith the X X Congress o f the State C ouncil fo r the P ro te c tio n of N a tu re in Poland, the a u th o r discusses the p ro b le m of educating and b rin g in g up the yo u n g g e neration w it h a p ro p e r a ttitu d e to w a rd s n a tu re p ro te ctio n .

T h e a u th o r points out th a t in th e secondary-school program m es the problem s connected w ith n a tu re p ro te c tio n have been h ith e rto d ealt w it h inadequately. These problem s o u ght to be d ealt w ith in the in s tru c tio n objectives w h ic h the school is charged w ith , as w e ll as in the developm ent of p ro g ra m m e m a te ria l, and in the m e th o d ic a l notes.

T h e n a tu re -p ro te c tio n idea is tre a te d m ost w id e ly , of course, in the b io lo g y p ro g ra m m e ; it also gets some in c id e n ta l con sid era tio n in the geography p ro g ra m m e . E d u ca tio n in the sphere of n a tu re p ro te c tio n should, in the a u th o r’s o p in io n , be based on apperceptive and em otional grounds, and on p ra c tic a l activities. A lm o st a ll subjects ta u g h t in school can constitute a b a ckg ro u n d fo r th e e m o tio n a l fa c to r; the apperceptive side w ill be su pported m a in ly by b io lo g y, but, w ith th e teacher’s g o o d -w ill, its aim s can be fu rth e re d b y o th e r subjects, even b y m a th e ­ m atics and fo re ig n -la n g u a g e studies.

H o w e ve r, p ro p e r tre a tm e n t of th e n a tu re -p ro te c tio n p ro b le m w ith in th e s c h o o l-p ro g ra m m e demands, as a f ir s t step, a p p ro p ria te tr a in in g of the teachers.

These tendencies have e x e rte d th e ir in fluence on the fa s h io n in g of the e lem entary-school p ro g ra m m e in w h ic h the greatest stress has been p u t on n a tu re -s tu d y subjects.

T h e a u th o r discusses in tu r n th e p ro g ra m m e s of th e fo u rth to the e ig th fo rm fro m the p o in t of v ie w of the place a llo tte d in them to topics connected w it h th e question o f n a tu re p ro te c tio n . In spite o f ce rta in shortcom ings, i t m ust be p o in te d o u t th a t n a tu re p ro te c tio n has never been tre a te d so fu lly in any p re vio u s e lem entary-school p ro ­ gram m e.

T h e re a l problem , h o w e ver, a ccording to the a u th o r, lies else­

w h e re : nam ely in th e shortage o f an adequate n u m b e r of p ro p e rly tra in e d teachers, to w h o m n a tu re p ro te c tio n and education of the young generation in a fu ll consciousness o f th is idea w o u ld become the fo re m o s t duty.

W ith o u t the fu lfilm e n t of the above postulate, a ll recom m enda­

tio n s in th e p ro g ra m m e w ill be of no avail.

In such a w a y the cinema should in the fir s t instance awaken a lo n g in g fo r p rim itiv e n a tu re ; then i t should encourage the spectator to get to k n o w it, should arouse an a ffe ctio n fo r it, and a respect fo r th e law s w h ic h govern it; and in the end the cinema shoul b rin g about an u n d e rsta n d in g of w h a t n a tu re means to man, and w h y it m ust be protected.
