A new podded competitor: the Memiaid integral propulsion unit has been launched by Kamewa and Cegelec, and has already secured its first orders. Following the con-tract to supply units for a semi-submersible platform, a significant breakthrough has been made in securing orders firom Royal Caribbean/Celebrity for new-generation cruise ships powered by gas turbo-electric systems. New delivery from Stocznia Gdynia: the 2102TEU container ship Classica was handed over in May to the German owner Gebriider Winter. She is the second exam-ple of this yard's 8148 type. More news from Poland appears in our special feature which begins on page 42.

Turkish shipyards are successflilly promot-ing themselves ou the international scene today, amidst a large investment pro-gramme. What is claimed to be the first-ever interac-tive self-testing marine fire alarm system has been launched by Autronica. The AutroSafe Self Verify model is said to break new ground in safety and cost. Using digital technology, each detector is tested automat-ically and daily for sensitivity and detection capability. An artist's impression of a new-design cargo ship for the Dutch owner Spliethoff. A series of these 18,900dwt vessels have been ordered from Mitsubishi and Tsuneishi in Japan. They will be chartered to carry paper for the Finnish company UPM Kymmene, hence the inclusion of two side-ports.
