nand auffand. Die erste Aufführung fand am 21. März 1839 unter der Leitung Mendelssohns im Leipziger Gewandhaus statt.

The C major Symphony, the last and biggest among Schubert’s symphonic works, was created in March, 1828. The »Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde« of Vienna, to whom Schubert submitted it for performance, rejected the symphony as being »too big and difficult« ; it remained unknown to the world until more than ten years after the master’s death, when Robert Schu
mann, during a visit to Vienna, discovered the manuscript which was then in the possession of Schubert’s brother, Ferdinand. The first performance took place, on March 21, 1839, at the Leipsic Gewandhaus, under Mendels- s o h n’s direction.
