1 Warm-up

Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 4 minutes

Teacher asks students to brainstorm for any water animals they know. Where do they live?

Teacher elicits different water habitats, e.g. lake, river, stream. Did students see any animals in these reservoirs (e.g. while on holiday)?

2 Main stage

2.1. Introduction of the target language – film (lexical input) Interaction forms: whole class

Duration: 8 minutes

Teacher tells students that they will watch a short film about water animals. He/She plays the video, pausing occasionally to explain more difficult words, e.g. trout, manta, feed,

invertebrates, etc. The target vocabulary should be put on the board.

2.2. Introduction of the target language – film (true/false) Interaction forms: individual, whole class

Duration: 10 minutes

Teacher distributes a true/false task (below). He/She asks students to read the sentences given and see if they can answer any of them.

The film is played a second time. Students work individually to complete the task. Then the answers are checked with the whole class.

Decide if the following sentences are true or false, and tick the appropriate column.

True False 1. Trout is a tropical animal.

2. Mantas feed on small fish.

3. Catfish live all over the world, even in Antarctica.

4. There are about 500 species of sharks.

5. Some sharks live in rivers.

6. Dolphins and mantas are mammals.

7. Trouts, sharks and dolphins are carnivorous.

8. Blue whale is the biggest water animal, but dinosaurs were bigger.

Answers: 1 false (lives in cold streams), 2 false (on zooplankton), 3 false (except Antarctica), 4 true, 5 true, 6 false (dolphins and whales are), 7 true, 8 false (it is the biggest ever)

2.3. Consolidation of the target language – worksheet Interaction forms: individual, whole class

Duration: 10 minutes

Teacher distributes worksheets to all students (see below). He/She explains that there are two options in each sentence and students will have to decide which one is correct.

Students work individually, then the answers are elicited in open class.

Duration: 10 minutes

Students do the quiz: they have to match the pictures with the words – the names of water animals. The words tested are: trout, manta ray, catfish, shark, dolphin, whale, squid, seal.

3 Closing stage

Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 3 minutes

Teacher concludes the lesson by eliciting from students the names of the water animals they met in the lesson. Where do they live? How do they feed?

Additional information

Teacher advises students that the www.scholaris.pl website offers a computer application in the form of a multimedia dictionary presenting correct pronunciation together with

translations of words and phrases learned during the lesson.
