Eine vortreffliche Summa der w ichtigsten sozialen Ideen und E in richtungen, die im A lte n Testam ent begegnen! N ach kurzer, allgem einer Grundlegung, welche die beiden wesentlichen Bedingungen für die soziale Ordnung, nämlich den festen W ohn sitz und den gesellschaftlichen Zu
sammenschluss zur E in heit des Volkslebens charakterisirt (S. 5 — 7), w ird Israels E igenart nach beiden Momenten, nam entlich deren religiöse B e

hältnis zu den alttestam entlichen Gesetzen: die Erfüllung dieser is t die in Christo vollkom m en offenbar gewordene Gottes- und Menschenliebe und die A r t des von Christo gegründeten Gottesreichs, zw ei Momente, die das A lte und Neue Testam ent auch in sozialer H insicht nicht m inder verbinden als trennen (2 8 — 31). Das Büchlein kann als vorzüglicher W egw eiser in dem W irrw a rr unserer Z e it, welche politisch-soziale und biblisch-theologische Fragen auseinanderzuhalten im m er m ehr zu ver

D as Gute an E pik tet’s Encheiridion möchten w ir nicht als ein „g u t Stück Christenthum “ — dem allerdings der H erzpunkt fehle — bezeichnen; es handelt sich um ein anderes Prinzip, w ie doch auch aus H ilty ’s Anm erkung zu I, S. 43 ff.

Durch die einzelnen christlichen A n klänge namentlich bei Seneca w ird an diesem Verhältniss nichts ge ändert, am wenigsten für E piktet.
