Divine Mercy Sunday
St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr
Stanisŀaw Szczepanowski was the only son of noble par- ents in Poland. He was born in 1030 in southern Poland.
Early in life he decided to become a priest. He was very well educated and eventually became the bishop of Kra- ków. At that time the King of Poland was Bolesŀaw II who was known as the cruel. Bishop Stanislaus spoke out against the king’s corrupt and immoral behavior. The re- sult was the king first tried to destroy his good reputation through slander. When this did not work he ordered his guards to do away with the bishop. When that did not work the king himself took a sword and murdered the bishop himself while he was saying Mass. This martyrdom took place in 1079 on either April 11th or May 8th. Both days are observed as his feast day.
