D

ear Parishioners and Friends,

The first reading neglects to include that this is the prophet Jonah’s second commission from the Lord. In the preceding chapters, Jonah ignored God’s request to preach to the pagan city of Nineveh in Assyria. When today’s reading begins, Jonah is now on his way to the city of his enemies. His preaching is successful. The peo- ple of Nineveh – the king and commoner – repent and believe in God, who sees their sincerity and does not send divine wrath upon them. The tale of Jonah the reluctant prophet is a post-exilic story meant to remind the Jews that God’s judgment and mercy extend beyond the narrow bounds of Israel to include even a nation as wicked as Assyria.

In chapter seven of Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, he addresses the community’s concerns about marriage in light of the second coming of Jesus, or parousia. After offering practical advice, he then notes that time is run- ning out. The very institutions about which the Corinthi- ans are so concerned will soon be obsolete. When Jesus Christ returns, the reign of God will come to fullness, and the present reality will be wholly changed.

As today’s Gospel opens, John’s arrest signals the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. He came to Galilee to pro- claim the gospel of God. “The reign of God is at hand.

Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The Gospel has two components: urgency of the end-times and a response on the part of the listeners. As Mark’s Gospel continues, the reader will recognize that the reign of God is made mani- fest in the person and deeds of Jesus. This Gospel of God that Jesus preaches requires a response. Those who hear are to repent (metanoeo)and believe (pisteuo). Like the people of Nineveh in the first reading, one must change his or her way of thinking and behaving. Metanoia means literally a change of mind. But change is not enough; one must also believe in the good news of God. The call of the disciples becomes a narrative example of the appropriate response to the Gospel. Simon and Andrew and then James and John literally drop what they are doing, leaving behind their livelihood and their families in response to Jesus’ summons.

God bless,

Fr. Andrew

K

ochani Parafianie,

Zatem pierwsza rzecz – to odnalezienie swojego!

egzemplarza.

Niektórzy lubią duże litery, inni więcej komentarzy w nocie marginalnej, czy w przypisach, a jeszcze inni korzystają z wersji obcojęzycznych bądź elektronicznych.

Hbr4,12), i daje natchnienie do życia tu i teraz.

Biblia?

Szczesc Boze,

Ks. Tomasz Pietrzak, SChr

BLESSING OF THROATS In honor of the FEAST OF ST. BLAISE, (on February 3rd), our parish will participate in the beautiful tradition of having our throats blessed at all weekend Masses on February 6th & 7th. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no blessing of individual throats. A general blessing will be administered at each of the Masses. It was St. Blaise, a physician and bishop, who asked God to cure a child who was choking to death on a fish bone and the child's life was saved.

Thus, St. Blaise is the patron saint of healthy throats.

PRAYER: Saint Blaise, pray for us that we may not suf- fer from illnesses of the throat and pray that all who are

suffering be healed by God's love. PRAY FOR THE SICK

Please remember to pray for the sick of our parish; especially those in a hospital or nursing home. Pray for the sick & also their caregivers.

We invite you for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Saint John Paul II Chapel, Monday-Friday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Confessions will be heard during Adoration. Holy Mass begins at 6:30 p.m. During Eucharistic Ado- ration, we “watch and wait”, we remain “silent” in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 28TH 6:30-7:30 P.M.
