A new design from Denmarli. Section tfirough tfie hold of Burmeister & Wain Shipyard's new BCT70 design, seen here in its oil/bulk/ore (OBO) version. A double-skin configurahon provides smooth Interior surfaces, and the overall design is the first to which the new Det norske Veritas HC/EA class notation applies: 'Any hold or combination of holds may be filled with cargo of a density exceeding the homogeneous stowage rate by not less than 50% at full draught Further, any hold may be empty at full draught'. Additional details of this interesting design, as well as other technical advances from Denmark, can be found in our special feature which begins on page E8.

The most recent ship conversion com-pleted by the Italian specialist, Marlotti of Genoa, was that of the 25,550grt cruise liner, Costa IVIarina. The liner was built up from the hull of the 20-year-old Swed-ish container ship. A x e l J o h n s o n (14,900dwt), in an unusual conversion which makes substantial use of glass in windows, overhead domes and skylights. Further details can be found in Tony New-man's annual cruise liner report on page E30.

Tlie St Helena is a combination of cargo carrier and dass 7 passenger vessel — she has extensive accommodation and public rooms for up to 132 passengers, as well as comprehensive cargo facilities. Completed by A&P Appledore (Aberdeen) to replace the first St Helena on the UK/South Atlantic service, this vessel provides the islanders of St Helena with their only transportation link with the outside world. Further details can be found in John Lingwood's feature on page E67.

Central theme of Silja S e r e n a d e is this 140m long, 8m wide teak-laid promenade which is home to many of the ferry's restaurants, cafes and shops — as can be seen, a large number of the cabins on four deck levels look out on to this space. Comprehensive fire protection for this design has been worked out, which is similar to USCG proposals for atriums. Full details of this vessel, together with other developments from Finland, can be found in our special feature which begins on page E72.

Novel features for Burmeister & Wain's newest standard bulk carrier, the BCT70. This view from the bridge ofthe lead ship S o l i d a r n o s c (delivered last month to the Polish Steamship Co) reveals the inclu-sion of a trunk deck and MacGregor-Navire side-rolling hatch covers without coamings. A special article on this latest in a line of successful Panamax designs from the Copenhagen builder begins on page El75.

Aerial view of the 6,000grt, 99.8m iength passenger vessel Sirinnau recently de-livered by Meyer Werft of Papenburg, Germany to the Directorate General of Sea Communication, Jakarta, Indonesia. This newbuilding is the second in a series of three vessels and at the same time the ninth passenger ship from Meyer for the Republic of Indonesia. All these passenger ships are employed on the Indonesian inter-island service. Fur-ther details of oFur-ther ship designs from Germany can be found in our special fea-ture which begins on page El90.

Sealinl< Stena Line's new feriy, Stena C h a l l e n g e r (18,625dwtl, wiiich has been purpose-built to serve the company's Dover-Calais and Dunkerque routes on a schedule of three round trips per day, marks the first stage in this operator's multi-million pound expansion plan on its Channel routes. The 154m length vessel, which was built at the Fosen shipyard in Norway, has capacity for almost 100 freight units and 500 passengers per sailing, and a service speed of 17.5 knots is ensured by its two Wartsila-Sulzer 8ZA40S engines, which each produce 5,280kW at 510rev/min. Further informa-tion on this ferry can be found in our special article which begins on page E329.

First of a pair of 164m length luxury liners currently being built by the private Span-ish yard. Union Naval de Levante of Valencia, for Stockholm-based EffJohn International. This vessel is pictured in the yard's floating dock where, due to berth and crane restnctions, some of the superstructure steelwork was being fit-ted. Each of the liners will carry 918 pas-sengers and 284 crew and will be the largest ships built to date at Valencia. l\/lore information on these vessels as well as other developments at Spanish yards can be found in our feature which begins on page E336.

Pictured above is Hansa B r e m e n , one of four Hansa class reefer vessels recently completed by Bremer Vulkan. All four are operated by Leonhardt & Blumberg for Cool Carriers and were designed to a de-tailed specification wiiich called for a higher speed than most recent newbuildings as well as a four-hold ar-rangement with as near to equal cargo capacity as possible. Further details of these vessels, together with other refrig-erated ship designs, can be found in our special feature which begins on page E395.

The gas tanker LNG B o n n y has emerged from a major refit at the Yokohama Yard of Mitsubishi to enter service with Pertamina of Indonesia and Malaysia LNG. The 133,000m^ vessel if one of a pair of GAZ Transport membrane-type vessels built by Kockums in 1981 and 1984 (LNG Finima) and since in lay-up in Germany. Eventually, the vessel will inau-gurate a new LNG trade from Nigeria to Europe and USA under the management of Shell Tankers (UK). More information on gas tanker developments can be found in our special feature which begins on page E400.

Ttie upper vehicle deck on P&O's n e w freight/passenger ferry European Seaway, which, together with the main vehicle deck, is designed in such a way as to enable the fastest and easiest loading/discharge. Both decks are therefore completely flat with three lanes passing to starboard ofthe engine casing and four to port. The vehicle lanes are at least 3. Im wide as opposed to the width of2.85m-3.0m normally found on ro-ro vessels and this extra space facilitates parking. Further details of European S e a w a y can be found in our special article which begins on page E515.

Seen here is D r a g o n Branl, one of three 7,800dwt container ships ordered by Neptune Orient Lines from Singapore Shipbuilding & Engineering. The design can carry 450TEU and is classed with the American Bureau of Shipping for unmanned machinery operation. Shipbuilding yards in Singapore are currently enjoying a mini-boom in new construction work, especially for larger classes of vessels. Some ofthe more notable ones are examined on pages E529 andE531 of this issue.

An integral part of ttie total waste treat-ment system aboard the cruise liner N o r d i c E m p r e s s are these two incinera-tors supplied by Deerberg-Systems. The configuration, which is the largest ever installation on cruise ships and ferries, is designed for handling both burnable and non-burnable waste. One of the main ad-vantages of this system is that food and wet waste are treated at source, without needing to be transported throughout the whole ship to a food waste chute. More information on waste disposal installa-tions from Deerberg-Systems and other companies can be found in our special feature which begins on page E470.

Seen here is G r o u s e A r r o w , the newest advance in all-weather forest products transport and the first of a trio of vessels delivered by Mitsui's Tamano yard for K G Jebsen's Gearbulk services. Although fully enclosed, the ship is classed as a bulk carrier and has no hatch covers. All cargo is loaded and discharged via two shell doors fitted with side curtains, through which telescopic cranes extend to transfer loads. These ships form part of our special report on shipbuilding in Japan which begins on page E445.
