SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE

At a time when so many stage shows are based on films, it is odd that it has taken so long for Shakespeare in Love to arrive on the stage. The Oscar-laden movie, with its wonderfully witty script, was terrific, but in Lee Hall’s delightful theatrical adaptation the piece seems to have found its true home. You can feel the audience getting behind the piece from the start, and by the end this inventive and touching comedy seems like a joyous celebration of the possibilities of theatre itself. It’s got the lot – a stirring love story, a prodigious succession of terrific jokes – and it sends up the theatre something rotten while simultaneously delighting in it.

Before taking my seat, I worried that the director and the designer might be too serious for the task in hand. Their Cheek by Jowl company, which specialises in serious classics, often in foreign languages, is much admired but not exactly famous for the number of laughs it generates. But they too seem to have fallen under the spell of the piece in which the young Shakespeare, suffering from a bad case of writer’s block, finds the inspiration to write Romeo and Juliet when he falls in love with Viola De Lesseps, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, little realising that she is leading a secret life of her own by disguising herself as a boy actor in his own acting company.

There is a huge cast, including a splendid Irish wolfhound called Spot, who has a significant part to play in the proceedings, and a band of musicians performing a delightful Renaissance- inflected score by Paddy Cunneen. There is a real sense of ensemble and shared enjoyment about the acting company. Tom Bateman is a handsome, virile Shakespeare. Whether dressed as a boy or a girl, Lucy Briggs-Owen proves an enchanting delight as Viola. Paul Chahidi is a comic joy as the theatre owner, while David Ganly offers a wicked impersonation of Brian Blessed as his boomingly theatrical rival Burbage.

In a nutshell, this is the best British comedy since One Man, Two Guvnors and deserves equal success.

LOST IN LEGO: BRICKING IT

A new exhibition with sculptures, made not from clay or marble but the humble Lego brick, is coming to London. The Art of the Brick consists of more than 80 sculptures by Nathan Sawaya, constructed from millions of the little plastic blocks. At this point, the question arises as to whether you can make art from Lego. There seems to be widespread media agreement that it is possible. 1. _____ Is that so? Certainly these Lego statues aspire to the kinds of existential anguish you might see in serious art. There is a figure pulling open its own chest – to reveal bricks pouring out from within. 2. _____ Serious stuff! In fact, some of the sculptor Antony Gormley’s work also looks like Lego – his giant figure squatting on a London hotel resembles a superscale Lego man. So maybe Lego modelling and contemporary art are coming together?

Personally I don’t buy it. 3. _____ Indeed a couple of weeks ago I was at Legoland Windsor.

The rides are great, but so is the zone of the park called Miniland. Here are miniature recreations of the countries of Europe, from Dutch canal houses to Belgian bars and the Gherkin. 4. _____ I don’t think that idea even occurs to the visiting crowds. Why should it?

Lego is Lego. It is enormous fun. What is the point of encumbering this joyous objects with that heavy word “art”?

The real magic of Lego – as the brilliant Lego Movie shows – is created by the children who play with it. When a child makes something out of Lego, would it be sane to insist it was a work of art that belonged in the Tate?

Adapted from: http://www.theguardian.com A. Sawaya’s work is praised for its artistic portrayal of joyful emotion.

B. And another one holding up a Lego mask as if meditating on the enigma of identity.

C. Cool stuff – but would you call it “art”?

D. Reports uncritically call it “art”, made by an “artist”.

E. Indeed, getting lost in Lego is part of the appeal.

F. I do, on the other hand, purchase a lot of Lego.
