m a r t eD a w n Frazer, the first low wash catamaran for the Sydney Harbour/Parramatta River'
route.
Peering intently info the scratched sur-face of the crystal ball, it is possible to discern a few signs of improvement in the fast ferry market.- The past couple of years have been a worrying time for many builders. There has been a steady market for replacement and new ton-nage in the conventional catamarans up to 40m or so but the sheer number of potential manufacturers worldwide has meant intense competition f o r each or-der and slim pickings for several build-ers. This has not stopped Austal Ships in Australia filling their yard for several years with catamarans in the 40 metre bracket for river service in the PRC, the orders being placed via H o n g Kong i n -termediaries.
L o w wash catamarans have been a f o -cus of attention and craft put into ser-vice i n the U K and Australia, most re-cently the commuter catamarans built for the Sydney Harbour/Parramatta route. Although there are many rivers and restricted waterways with the po-tential f o r a fast craft service, these routes also tend to be lined with people keeping a beady eye on wash and very ready to complain. I n the f u t u r e , there-fore, there seems to be plenty of poten-tial f o r low wash fast craft and further technical progress can be expected in this direction. .
Medium size surface effect ships con-tinue to be promoted heavily and a number of examples sold, f o r instance the first two of the UT904 design f r o m Ulstein, one of which went to Korea the other to a route between Italy and Greece. However, the recently an-nounced closure of the E i k e f j o r d yard in Norway which produced these com-posite vessels, and the failure of a num-ber o f manufacturers pushing concept vessels in the 25m to 40m size bracket to win f i r m orders has thrown rather a shadow on this sector.

Likewise, S W A T H vessels have not made the breakthrough that was hoped for, although a number i n service have proved satisfactory f o r their purpose, for example the Navatek design in Hawaii (although this is not a particu-larly fast craft), or the F B M Patria in Madeira. The S W A T H is, however, by no means dead and provided construc-tion costs can be kept within bounds, a deep draught is not a major disadvan-tage and speed requirments are not too high, the concept has much to offer i n terms of seakeeping, and seakeeping is,
