Sir Robert f l i l l joined the Royal Navy as an engineer officer in 1955 and retired in 1993 wiüa the rank of Vice Admiral. He gained a London University (External) BSc engineer-ing degree at the Royal Naval Engineerengineer-ing College, Manadon.
His earlier career was spent on nuclear submarines and at the Ministry of Defence working on submarine machinery design. After a period on the staff at Mandon he served as Marine Engineer Officer in a frigate and was later appointed Nuclear Power Manager at the Naval Base, Chatham. He then became Captain of the Royal Navy's New Entry Training Establishment and RN Supply School. He was later appointed Chief Staff Officer (Engineering) to the Commander in Chief Fleet, then Deputy Controller of the Navy and Chief Naval Engineer Officer. On retirement he held the post of Director General Submarines.
