INTRODUCTION
I hereby w e l c o m e y o u t o t h e 24"^ e d i t i o n of t h e HISWA International Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction. The HISWA Symposium has started in 1969 and t h e oldest symposium in t h e area o f yacht design and research and is recognised as o n e of t h e w o r l d ' s m o s t appreciated symposiums in this f i e l d . It is b i
-annually organised by HISWA Association, Delft University of Technology and RAI A m s t e r d a m organizer of METS, t h e M a r i n e Equipment Trade Show held annually in A m s t e r d a m .
This symposium is also my first as Chairman of t h e Organizing C o m m i t t e e . Compared t o t h e p r o g r a m m e s of t h e previous HISWA Symposia w e have increased t h e n u m b e r of papers t o be presented f r o m an average of 15 t o 23. To be able t o do this w i t h i n t h e same t i m e f r a m e o f one and a half day t h e t i m e f o r each speaker t o present his paper has been s h o r t e n e d t o 20 m i n u t e s f o r presenting his paper. Time f o r questions and
discussions is m a d e available in t h e p r o g r a m m e only at t h e end o f each session. This way w e can o f f e r a m o r e efficient, diverse a n d , t h e r e f o r e , hopefully a m o r e attractive p r o g r a m m e f o r o u r participants. So w e h o p e t h a t this new concept w i l l also m e e t your expectations.
There is a lot happening in t h e yachting w o r l d at this m o m e n t w i t h respect t o t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n of n e w
materials, design tools and innovative and alternative solutions f o r b e t t e r sailing and seakeeping p e r f o r m a n c e and energy r e d u c t i o n . New yacht designs f o r exploring t h e arctic w a t e r s is another t r e n d at this m o m e n t also covered by some o f t h e papers at this s y m p o s i u m .
U n f o r t u n a t e l y , since t h e last HISWA symposium held in N o v e m b e r 2014, also a n u m b e r of w e l l - k n o w n yacht designers past away. In this context I w o u l d like t o c o m m e m o r a t e in particular Professor Fabio Fossati f r o m Milan Polytechnic University in Italy, w h o was a regular speaker at o u r symposia. His d e p a r t u r e in December 2015, at t h e age o f 53 is a big loss f o r t h e sailing and scientific c o m m u n i t y . His latest book " A e r o
-Hydrodynamics and t h e Performance of Sailing Yachts: The Science behind Sailboats and t h e i r Design" t h a t came o u t in 2010 has already become a w o r l d w i d e reference t e x t book f o r sailing yacht t h e o r y in use by many designers and students.
Also this t i m e w e w e r e again very successful in attracting students t o this s y m p o s i u m . This interesting and challenging yachting industry needs creative, innovative and enthusiastic people t h a t are able and w i l l i n g t o make t h e yachting industry m o r e attractive, high p e r f o r m a n c e b u t also affordable industry. In t h e c o m i n g years a lot of very experienced and well k n o w n designers and researchers in t h e field o f yacht design and c o n s t r u c t i o n w i l l leave t h e "business" or have already left. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , some earlier t h a n expected.
Finally, o n behalf o f t h e Organizing C o m m i t t e e , I w o u l d like t o express m y g r a t i t u d e t o o u r sponsors, D a m e n Shipyards, M a r i t i m e Research Institute Netherlands, Feadship and t h e A x e - b o w f o u n d a t i o n , w i t h o u t w h o m this s y m p o s i u m w o u l d n o t be possible at an affordable price. To conclude, I hope this was an ideal
o p p o r t u n i t y , especially f o r t h e students, t o m e e t t h e elder, m o r e experienced, g e n e r a t i o n .
