E I

A) The other museum I visited in California near San Francisco was the prison Alcatraz. You just go there by boat and find yourself in the prison where Al Capone and other criminals were kept. “Alcatraz” means

“pelican” because in the past only these birds lived on this island.

B) But the food in my hotel was very good. I could taste the cuisine from all over the world. I was staying in the expensive Hilton Hotel paid by my agent. When I was playing tennis I met the Polish actor who starred in this film.

C) The first problem I had was connected with the journey to the USA. It was very difficult to get a ticket and travel agents kept telling me “We are full”. Finally I get a ticket on a flight to Paris, then I had to change in New York and after 15 hours I landed in Los Angeles.

D)Tourism in California is a kind of industry. It has a great impact on people’s lives. Tourists are valued and liked but on the other hand they leave a lot of litter everywhere. The restaurants and streets are crowded and you have to stay in big traffic jams. If you want to relax, go and visit the Grand Canyon nearby.

E) The second problem I had was in fact my ambition to talk to as many American people as possible. For a foreigner speaking only Polish and German and a little English it was not easy at all. By absolute chance, I landed in LA when the movie about the Russian empire was made and there were a lot of actors speaking the Russian language.

F) I decided to go to the USA because I’m working on articles about the American culture. I have already been to several states in this country but somehow have not made it to California, the most famous of them all.

G) There was a press briefing sponsored by the Russian Embassy, so I agreed to give a little talk and help. In this way I met some Americans of the Russian origin who live in LA and they invited me to their homes. It was shocking to find that they don’t eat at home only they eat out in fast food restaurants.

H) I then moved for a few days to the main holiday resort, Santa Monica, which is basically one enormous white beach. But I didn’t like it. There were too many people and I couldn’t swim because of huge waves ideal only surfers.

I) In connections with collections and museums I visited the small town using in filming movies. It has wooden houses, a bank, saloons, a wide street and is filled with things you find in westerns.

J) There are not many Polish people in Los Angeles but this Polish actor introduced me to the guide who works for the Hollywood studios and I had the chance to watch movies scenes and the museum with gadgets, costumes and cars.

C) How long does it take to get ready for World Book Day?

D) What kind of books do you like most?

E) What has been your favourite costume?

F) Have you decided on next year’s costume?

G) Why do you dress up as characters from books?

World Book Day

To celebrate annual World Book Day, we’ve interviewed Amy Jones, a veteran of dressing up, who loves getting into character!

87) …… My school has always celebrated World Book Day so I haven’t missed a single year! I’ve always loved reading and dressing up, so I’ve done it all through primary and secondary school.

88) …… Oh, I’ve made so many – it’s hard to choose! When the first Harry Potter best-seller came out, I was Hermione Granger. Last year, I was Katniss Everdeen form The Hunger Games. I’ve also been Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Guinevere from King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

89) …... It takes a week or so to make the costume. My mum used to prepare it, but she hasn’t made my costumes since I’ve been at secondary school. On World Book Day my friends come round and we help each other get ready – this takes about an hour.

90) ……. Unfortunately, I’ve done my last World Book Day at school, as I’m going to college next year! But I’ve decided that I’m going to get involved in ‘cosplay’ (‘costume play’) – there are special conventions where people present themselves as characters from comics, fantasy stories or science fiction films. At the moment, I’m working on my Catwoman costume, but I haven’t finished it yet.

91) …... Oh, probably because it’s like losing yourself in a good book – you can escape from reality, just for a little while!
