Thermodynamics of the Atmosphere 2020-2021
Tutorial 6
Thermodynamic diagrams
Plot the following isolines:
• temperature, T
• pressure, p
• potential temperature θ = T (p0/p)Rd/cp
• mixing ratio r = es(T )/(p − es(T ))
• equivalent potential temperature θe = θ exp (Lv(T )rs/cpT )
in coordinates corresponding to the Stuve, Skew-T or Tephigram diagrams presented in Lecture 10.
A parcel of air has following properties {T, p, qv} = {10oC, 850hP a, 4g/kg}.
Estimate the following properties using a diagram:
• dew point temperature
• wet bulb temperature
• potential temperature
• temperature and pressure at the Lifting Condensation Level
• equivalent potential temperature
• saturated equivalent potental temperature.
Calculate all above parameters using appropriate formulae.
