T h i s v o l u m e c o n t a i n s t h e p a p e r s p r e s e n t e d a t t h e f i f t h V T T - M a r i n e T e c h n o l o g y Symposium, w h i c h was h e l d on 12 and 13 J a n u a r y 1988 i n H a n a s a a r i , E s p o o . T h e s y m p o s i u m c o v e r e d c u r r e n t r e s e a r c h w o r k on s h i p s t r u c t u r e s a s w e l l a s i n h y d r o d y n a m i c s .
The f i r s t day was d e v o t e d p a r t l y t o r e s e a r c h on a c o u s t i c and v i b r a t o r y p r o p e r t i e s o f s h i p s t r u c t u r e s . T h e m a i n e m p h a s i s , h o w e v e r , was l a i d upon s t r u c t u r a l p r o b l e m s c o n n e c t e d t o i c e n a v i g a t i o n . A c o n s i d e r a b l e p a r t o f t h e o n g o i n g w o r k i n t h i s a r e a h a s b e e n s u p p o r t e d by t h e T e c h n o l o g y D e v e l o p m e n t C e n t e r T E K E S , w h i c h i s h e r e b y g r a t e f u l l y a c k n o w l e d g e d .
