Szanowni Państwo!

Oddajemy w Wasze ręce wyjątkowy, bo 50 numer naszego maga- zynu Silesia Airport. Już od ośmiu lat wydajemy dla Państwa ten dwumiesięcznik. To jednak nie jedyny jubileusz. W maju tego roku świętujemy 10 rocznicę pierwszego regularnego rejsu linii lotniczej Wizz Air z Katowice Airport. Dekadę temu ów niskokosztowy prze- woźnik zaufał potencjałowi województwa śląskiego i na pyrzowi- ckim lotnisku otworzył swoją pierwszą bazę, ze swoim pierwszym samolotem, właśnie tu inaugurując działalność operacyjną. Dzi- siaj bazuje w Katowice Airport pięć Airbusów A320 i oferuje siatkę połączeń obejmującą 20 kierunków, mając jednocześnie znaczący udział w całości ruchu pasażerskiego realizowanego z Pyrzowic.

Wielkimi krokami zbliża się lato. W tym sezonie proponujemy naj- bogatszą w naszej historii siatkę połączeń wakacyjnych, liczącą aż 50 kierunków, w tym 11 nowości. Znaczna część nowej oferty obej- muje bardzo popularne kierunki greckie, którym przyglądamy się bliżej dedykując artykuł w bieżącym wydaniu naszego magazynu.

W kwietniu po raz kolejny przyjęliśmy na pyrzowickim lotni- sku pasażerskie Boeingi 747, czyli popularne Jumbo Jety – jedne z największych tego typu maszyn na świecie, o których przeczy- tacie Państwo w tym numerze Silesia Airport. Warto podkreślić, że fakt ten potwierdza nasze możliwości operacyjne w zakresie obsługi gigantycznych samolotów szerokokadłubowych. Wzrosną one jeszcze bardziej po ukończeniu inwestycji budowy nowej drogi startowej, wchodzącej w ostatnią fazę realizacji.

Welcome to this very special, 50th issue of our magazine. Sile- sia Airport has been published bimonthly for already eight years. This isn’t, however, the only event we’re celebrating.

In May this year, we’re also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first scheduled Wizz Air flight from Katowice Airport. A decade ago, this low-cost carrier recognised Silesia’s poten- tial, based its first aircraft and launched its operations at Ka- towice Airport. Today, there are 5 Wizz Air Airbus A320 aircraft based at our airport. The carrier offers a network of 20 des- tinations and holds a significant share of the total passenger traffic from Katowice. More about Wizz Air on the following pages of this issue.

Summer is looming large. This season we’re offering the larg- est network of holiday destinations in our airport’s history – 50 of them all together, including 11 new ones. A large number of these new routes are to very popular Greek holiday des- tinations. We're taking a closer look at these in this issue of Silesia Airport.

In April, Katowice Airport, once again hosted one of the largest machines in the world – the hugely popular Boeing 747 passen- ger aircraft. You can read more about Jumbo Jets in this issue of Silesia Airport. It is worth noting that our hosting aircraft such as the 747 confirms Katowice Airport’s operational ca- pabilities in handling these giant wide-bodied aircraft. These capabilities will increase even more when the construction of the new runway, which is now in its final stages, is completed.

Budowa nowych nawierzchni lotniskowych

W kwietniu br. na pyrzowickim lotnisku ruszyła budowa nowych nawierzchni, realizowana w ramach dwóch zadań. Pierwszym z nich jest budowa nowej płyty postojowej do odladzania statków powietrznych. Zlokalizowana zostanie w południowo-wschodniej części portu. Na płycie równolegle będzie można odladzać dwa sa- moloty wielkości Airbusa A320 albo Boeinga 737 lub jeden większy,

np. Boeinga 747 „Jumbo Jeta”. Całkowita powierzchnia nowych na- wierzchni lotniskowych, które powstaną w ramach tej inwestycji, wyniesie ok. 50 tys. m². Drugim zadaniem jest budowa płyty posto-

jowej dla samolotów cargo oraz drogi kołowania E0. W tym obsza- rze powstanie łącznie 35 tys. m² nowych nawierzchni lotniskowych.

Na nowej płycie postojowej znajdą się dwa stanowiska dla samo- lotów kodu C (to np. Airbus A320 / Boeing 737) lub zamiennie dla jednego kodu E (np. Boeinga 747). Sfinalizowanie obu przedsięwzięć planowane jest na koniec czerwca 2015 roku. Obydwa zadania reali-

zowane są poprzez unijny Program Operacyjny Infrastruktura i Środowisko (Fundusz Spójności), w ramach projektu który nosi na- zwę „Rozbudowa infrastruktury w celu zwiększenia możliwości ope- racyjnych lotniska MPL Katowice”. Wartość dofinansowania wynosi

50% kosztów kwalifikowanych inwestycji.

Z Germanwings do Düsseldorfu

Od początku kwietnia br. rejsy na trasie Katowice–Düsseldorf uzupełniają ofertę Germanwings. Niemiecki przewoźnik od ponie-

działku do piątku, w południe, realizuje lot z województwa śląskiego do stolicy Nadrenii Północnej-Westfalii, najbardziej zaludnionego landu Niemiec.

Samolot tej linii, startując

z Pyrzowic o godzinie 12:50, dociera do portu lotniczego Düssel- dorf o 14:30. Zgodnie z rozkładem wylot z Düsseldorfu odbywa się o 10:45, a przylot do Katowice Airport o godzinie 12:15. Bilety dostępne są na germanwings.com

Germanwings to Düsseldorf

From the beginning of April this year, Germanwings is offering services on the Katowice–Düsseldorf route. The German carrier

flies from Silesia to the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, every day from Monday to Fri- day, at noon. The Germanwings aircraft, takes off from Kato- wice at 12:50 pm and arrives in Düsseldorf at 2:30 pm. According to the timetable, flights to Katowice depart from Düsseldorf at 10:45 am, arriving at Katowice Airport at 12:15 pm. Tickets are available at germanwings.com

Construction of new airport surfaces

In April, construction of new airport surfaces began at Kato- wice Airport. This project is made up of two tasks, the first be- ing the construction of a new aircraft de-icing station, which will be located in the south-eastern section of the airfield.

Two aircraft the size of the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 will be able to be de-iced simultaneously, or one larger one aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 ”Jumbo Jet.” The total area of the new airport surfaces that will be constructed as part of this task will be around 50 000 m². The second task involves the con- struction of a cargo aircraft apron and taxiway E0. This task will result in a further 35 000 m² of airport surfaces. The new apron will have two parking positions for Code C (eg. Airbus A320 or Boeing 737) or alternatively, one Code E aircraft (eg.

Boeing 747). Both projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of June, 2015 and are implemented by the EU Opera- tional Programme Infrastructure and Environment (Cohesion Fund) as part of the ”Development of infrastructure in order to increase the operational capacity Katowice International Airport” programme. Fifty percent of eligible investments will be subsidised.

Rozbudowa bagażowni w terminalu A zakończona

W połowie kwietnia br. zakończyła się rozbudowa bagażowni odlotowej terminalu pasażerskiego A. W ramach przedsięwzięcia wymieniony został na nowy cały system przesyłu bagażu ze stanowisk odprawy biletowo-

-bagażowej do bagażowni. Ponadto bagażownia została rozbudowana, a jej powierzchnia wzrosła dwukrotnie. W związku z zakończeniem tej inwestycji wszystkie odprawy biletowo-bagażowe na rejsy do krajów strefy Non-Schengen odbywać się będą ponownie w terminalu pasażerskim A.

Niecodziennie pożegnania An Extraordinary farewell

Jedną z lotniczych tradycji są saluty wodne. Organizuje się je przy wyjątkowych okazjach – inauguracji rejsów nowego przewoźnika na dane lotnisko, czy też pożegnaniach, np. pilotów odchodzących na emeryturę. W Katowice Airport taka specjalna okazja wydarzyła się we wtorek 1 kwietnia br.

Właśnie w ten dzień swój ostatni rejs w barwach linii lotniczej Wizz Air odbył przed odejściem na emeryturę kapitan Gopal Shivam. Po przylocie do Pyrzowic czekała na niego niespodzianka w postaci pożegnalnego salutu, który wykonała Lotniskowa Służba Ratowniczo-Gaśnicza.

Water salutes are a tradition in aviation, and are used to celebrate special occasions – the launch of a new route by an airline from a given airport, or farewells, such as when a pilot retires. Tuesday, 1 April, saw a special occasion such as this one take place at Katowice Airport – celebrating Captain Gopal Shivam’s final Wizz Air flight prior to retiring.

A farewell water salute by the airport’s Rescue and Firefighting Service was awaiting the captain upon landing.

Expansion of the baggage hall in Terminal A completed

The expansion of the departures baggage hall in Termi- nal A was completed mid-April. This included the re- placement of the entire luggage conveyor system from check-in desks to the baggage hall. In addition, the bag- gage hall, itself, was expanded to twice its original size.

As this project reached completion, check-in for flights to Non-Schengen zone countries has been resumed in Terminal A.

Celem Wizz Aira jest łączenie ludzi, two- rzenie nowych miejsc pracy, stymulowanie wymiany handlowej oraz rozwoju turystyki pomiędzy krajami, z których oferuje połą- czenia. Ideę swojej działalności przewoź- nik znakomicie wdrożył w Pyrzowicach.

Z czasem siatka po- łączeń Wizz Aira poszerzyła się o kierunki typowo turystyczne, takie jak francuski Grenoble (w sezonie zimowym), Burgas (w sezonie letnim) czy Tel-Awiw, Kutaisi w Gruzji i Neapol (całoroczne).

Obecnie Wizz Air jest największym prze- woźnikiem w Pyrzowicach. Jego udział w całości ruchu pasażerskiego kształtuje się na poziomie 45%. Rocznie z pyrzo- wickiej siatki połączeń Wizz Aira korzysta ok. 1,2 mln podróżnych, a jego

Dzisiaj Wizz Air to lider przewozów w Eu- ropie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Dysponuje młodą flotą Airbusów A320, liczącą już 48 maszyn. W sumie ze swoich 19 baz oferuje 300 kierunków łącząc 96 miejsc w 35 kra- jach. Linia zatrudnia ok. 1700 wykwalifi- kowanych osób.

Wizz Air od początku działalności funkcjonuje w modelu niskokosz- towym oferując swoim pasażerom loty po Europie w atrakcyjnych cenach, a jednocześnie dbając o wysoką jakość świadczonych usług. Linia wielokrotnie udo- skonalała swój system rezer- wacyjny (zapewniający rezer- wację biletów w optymalnych cenach) celem dostarczenia jego użytkownikom korzyst- nych rozwiązań i przejrzyste- go systemu opłat. Przewoźnik inwestuje też w rozwój aplika- cji mobilnych na systemy iOS oraz Android, które umożliwia- ją zakup biletów, sprawdzenie statusu danego rejsu, czy też odprawę online. Z każdym rokiem Wizz Air zwiększa swoją obec- ność w krajach Europy Środkowej i Centralnej wprowadzając do floty nowe samoloty, otwierając kolejne bazy oraz powiększając siatkę połą- czeń, przy tym nieustannie utrzymując wysokie standardy usług świadczonych w niskich cenach.

Ten years ago, the aviation industry in Po- land underwent a true revolution. Acces- sion to the European Union meant that the open skies principle began to apply here, allowing foreign low-cost carriers entry onto the local market. The first to decide to make the most if this was Wizz Air. Reg- istered in Hungary, Wizz Air was a new- comer to Europe’s skies. As its first base, Wizz Air’s management chose Katowice Airport. It is at our airport that the carrier based its first Airbus A320 in the charac- teristic pink and purple livery and this is where the popular ”Landryna” (sweet – eng) performed its first scheduled flight, on 19 May, 2004, to London Luton.

Wizz Air’s aim is to connect people, cre- ate new jobs, stimulate trade and develop

tourism between the countries to which offers con-

nections. This

idea, the carrier implemented in Pyrzo- wice with great success. Thanks to Wizz Air, Europe opened up to residents of southern Poland. The airline continues to grow steadily at Katowice Airport. Since 2004, the base at our airport has grown to include four air- craft in autumn/winter and five in the spring- summer season. Cur- rently, the carrier of- fers 20 routes to 13 countries from Kato- wice Airport. At the beginning of its op- erations, Wizz Air’s network from Kato- wice Airport mainly foused on the regions of Europe boasting large clusters of Pol- ish people and countries that had opened up their labor markets to Polish citi- zens following its entry into

the European Union. Over time, Wizz Air’s network ex-

panded to include typically tourist destinations, such as

the Grenoble (in winter), Bur- gas (in summer) or Tel-Aviv,

Kutaisi in Georgia and Na- ples (year-round).

Currently, Wizz Air is the largest airline operat-

ing at Katowice Air- port. Its share in to- tal passenger traffic

is at a level of 45%.

Annually, 1.2 million passengers use Wizz Air’s network from Pyrzowice, and its Airbus A320 aircraft perform almost 8 000 operations (take offs and landings) at Ka- towice Airport. Today Wizz Air is a leader in terms of transport in Cen- tral and Eastern Europe, boasting a young fleet of 48 Airbus A320 aircraft. Overall, from its 19 bases, the airline offers 300 routes connecting 96 destinations in 35 countries. The

airline also employs a qualified staff of ap- proximately 1 700.

From the very outset, Wizz Air has oper- ated using a low-cost model, offering its passengers flights to Europe at afford- able prices, while ensuring a high qual- ity of services. The airline has repeatedly fine-tuned its reservation system, ensur- ing ticket bookingas at optimal prices, in order to provide its passengers with great solutions and a transparent pricing sys- tem. The carrier is also investing in the development of mobile applications for iOS and Android systems that allow passen- gers to purchase tickets, check the status of a particular flight or check in online.

With every year, Wizz Air is increasing its presence in Central and Eastern Europe by adding new aircraft to its fleet, open- ing additonal bases and expanding its network of connections, while constantly maintaining high standards of services at low prices. fot. Artur Nyk, Piotr Komander

Greek destinations have for years been at the forefront of plac- es where holidaymakers flock to from Katowice Airport. This choice is not at all surprising, as the country offers excellent weather during the holiday season. From May to September, the average air temperature doesn’t fall below 24°C, it boasts 10 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature ranges from about 19°C in May up to 25°C in the summer months. Greece is also a country of amazing cuisine, good hotel infrastructure and beautiful scenery. The fact that Greece is considered to be the cradle of European civilisation is particularly good news for those who enjoy package tours.

This year, the offer from travel agents and tour operators of holidays in Greece, departing from Katowice Airport includes 14 destinations – with 6 new ones. The popular resort areas from previous seasons like Chalkidiki, Chania and Heraklion on Crete, and 5 other islands – Kefalonia, Corfu, Kos, Rhodes and Zakyn- thos, are all available again this year. To find out more about the fourth new Greek charter destination from Katowice Airport, we need to jump to the eastern coast, to the Thermaikos Gulf on the Aegean Sea, to the extensive many-kilometre-long stretches of beaches called THE OLYMPIC RIVIERA. Here, we are guaranteed memorable, exotic holidays with stunning landscapes of the surrounding mountains, includ- ing the most important, Mt Olympus. As with so many places in Greece, we can combine lazing on the beach with tourist ex- cursions. There are several places that you need to visit in the vicinity of the Riviera. First of all, there’s Olympus Mountain Na- tional Park, the archaeological ruins in the ancient city of Dion, the complex of historic monasteries in Meteora which seem to be almost suspended in the clouds, and Ano Skotina – a village 750 m above sea level, with stone houses dating back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It’s also worth dropping into nearby Thessaloniki, the magical Byzantine city that never sleeps. If you want spend your time actively, this is where you can windsurf - but its also a great place to go diving. If you’re more into rock climbing, there are all manner of climbing routes to choose from – from simple to extremely difficult terrains.

The fifth new Greek destination is SOUTH PELOPONNESE. As the name suggests – it’s located in the southern part of Greece, where the Ionian and Aegean Seas meet. The peninsula is con- sidered the most scenically diverse region in the entire country, owing to the olive and orange groves, adjacent to high moun- tains cut by gorges and beautiful beaches. It also has the larg- est number of famous monuments in Greece, in the one area.

Po Paryżu poruszać się możemy tramwa- jami (trzy linie), autobusami (po mieście jeżdżą numery dwucyfrowe, na przedmieś- ciach trzycyfrowe), połączonym z liniami metra szybkim pociągiem miejskim RER (na przedmieściach) i metrem, które ma kilka- naście linii oznaczonych różnymi kolorami.

Metro nie kursuje przez całą dobę (jedynie od 5:30 do 1:20), ale i tak je polecamy, jest niezbędne zwłaszcza przy intensywnym zwiedzaniu.

Dzień pierwszy

Wszystkie najważniejsze atrakcje tury- styczne Paryża znajdują się w jego sercu, czyli rozkładają się po obu brzegach Sek- wany, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Île de la Cité i to od niej warto rozpocząć wędrówkę. Podłużna niczym statek wyspa była areną pierwszego osadnictwa na tym terenie. Najpierw zamieszkiwało ją plemię Paryzjów, potem Rzymianie, w końcu sta- ła się stolicą Merowingów. Tutaj właśnie, pomiędzy dwoma odnogami rzeki, znajdują się absolutne hity miasta, takie jak katedra Notre-Dame z zachwycającym wnętrzem i zjawiskową fasadą, powstałe w XIII wieku, ale przebudowywane Conciergerie, urze- kająca czystym gotykiem dwukondygna- cyjna Sainte-Chapelle czy ostatnie już au- tentycznie średniowieczne uliczki Paryża.

Co chwilę po Sekwanie mkną turystyczne łodzie-restauracje. Wiele z nich przepływa pod słynnym Nowym Mostem (Pont Neuf)

lub Kładką Artystów (Passerelle des Arts), z której rozciąga się najpiękniejszy widok na tę część miasta.

Korzystnie jest rozpocząć zwiedzanie od wyspy Cité, ponieważ dzięki temu, sma- kując Paryż na śniadanie, możemy podjąć decyzję dokąd się udamy. Wybór ogromny, ale pójdźmy południowym brzegiem przez Dzielnicę Łacińską, dużo bardziej zabudo- waną, zbitą, z większą liczbą wąskich uli- czek niż część północna. Odbijając od niej na zachód naszym celem może być (jeśli lubimy architekturę) gotycki kościółek Saint-Germain-des-Prés, długo znajdujący się poza granicami miasta. Znacznie leni- wiej odbędziemy spacer wzdłuż Sekwany z przystankami pod Instytutem Francuskim i Muzeum d'Orsay – chyba najsłynniejszym w Paryżu, oprócz oczywiście Luwru, zloka- lizowanym po drugiej stronie brzegu. Sto- imy przed nim patrząc z niedowierzaniem, że w przeszłości był to główny dworzec kolejowy. Geografia miasta nakazuje wręcz spojrzeć na zachód, gdzie majaczy szpiku- lec wieży Eiffla. Zanim zobaczymy ją z bli- ska, warto pójść przed Szpital Inwalidów.

To najbardziej spektakularna paryska ko- puła. Jarzy się złotym blaskiem miejsca, na którym kiedyś zbudowano największy

kompleks szpitalny Paryża. Dziś turyści przybywają tu głównie by wspominać mi- litarną potęgę Francji (Muzeum Armii) oraz do grobowca najsłynniejszego Francuza (miejsce pochówku Napoleona). Stąd pod wieżę już rzut kamieniem.

Wieża Eiffla, naszym zdaniem, dużo więk- sze wrażenie robi z daleka. Stojąc obok ciężko objąć ją wzrokiem, a co dopiero zmieścić na zdjęciu. Gdy jest szczyt sezonu i środek dnia, pomiędzy czterema stalo- wymi nogami piętrzą się kolejki do wejścia lub wjazdu na szczyt. Jeśli nad miastem nie ma smogu i jest dobra pogoda warto się wykosztować, by zobaczyć cudowną pa- noramę Paryża. Według nas najpiękniejszy widok na wieżę rozpościera się z drugiej strony rzeki, przy Pałacu Chaillot, z gór- nej części Ogrodów Trocadero. Tam znowu możemy skorzystać z metra i wybrać na koniec dnia albo futurystyczną, świetnie prezentującą się dzielnicę La Defénse (na zachód), albo udać się w kierunku Luwru.

W jednym i drugim przypadku miniemy po drodze Łuk Triumfalny. Nie będziemy mie- li żadnych problemów, aby wdrapać się na jego dach – platformę widokową. Stąd również zrobimy atrakcyjne, panoramicz- ne zdjęcia Paryża, zwłaszcza po zmierz-

chu. Potem proponujemy długi, wieczorny spacer wzdłuż Pól Elizejskich, aż do Placu de la Concorde, a następnie przez Ogrody Tuileries, póki nie są zamknięte, pod Luwr.

Nigdzie nocne zdjęcia Paryża nie wycho- dzą tak wspaniale, jak przed charaktery- styczną, szklaną piramidą wybudowaną na dziedzińcu muzeum. Wrócimy tu na zwie- dzanie jutro.

Dzień drugi

Musimy sobie jasno powiedzieć, że mając do dyspozycji dwa dni w Paryżu i chcąc przy tym wstąpić do Luwru, należy pójść na pewne kompromisy (podobnie jest w przypadku zwiedzania Muzeum Brytyj- skiego w trakcie 48 godzin pobytu w Lon- dynie). Żeby nie żałować, trzeba w Luw- rze spędzić przynajmniej pół dnia. Ale co zrobić, by zobaczyć w mieście coś jeszcze?

Mamy na to sposób: spróbujmy bardzo wcześnie wstać i udać się do jednej z tzw.

romantycznych dzielnic Paryża, związa- nych z artystyczną bohemą oraz wielo- ma znanymi w świecie nazwiskami. Są to Montparnasse, Montmartre i Marais. Chyba najlepiej zdecydować się na dwugodzinny spacer po słynnym Montmartre, bowiem ze wzgórza z białą bryłą Bazyliki Sacré-

-Coeur będziemy podziwiać fantastyczny świt nad Paryżem. Mamy godzinę siódmą rano, więc zanim oddalimy się w stronę Lu- wru, możemy przysiąść na kawę i bagietkę lub grzanki z konfiturami.

Marais z kolei to dzielnica dla miłujących spokój. Łatwo do niej dotrzeć kierując się na wschód z okolic Centrum Pompidou (z zewnątrz robiącym ogromne wrażenie)

i zatracić się w miejscu, gdzie życie, nawet w sezonie, toczy się powolnym rytmem.

Tutaj rekomendujemy odwiedzić Muzeum Miejskie. A tym, którzy lubią pospać i szu- kają wytchnienia... w sobotnie i niedzielne poranki proponujemy udać się do jednej z obrzeżnych dzielnic Paryża. Tam, na tra- dycyjnym targu połączonym z jarmarkiem, spróbujemy ekologicznych, lokalnych produktów i będziemy mogli przebierać w dziesiątkach rodzajów serów. Tak jest np.

w Montrouge, niedaleko Montparnasse.

Wróćmy do Luwru. Główne wejście do mu- zeum prowadzi przez wspomnianą, szklaną piramidę, pod którą rozpoczynamy zwie- dzanie. Kolekcje Luwru zgromadzone są w siedmiu działach. Mając pół dnia można zobaczyć przynajmniej najważniejsze dzie- ła, jak choćby Nike z Samotraki, Mona Lisę pędzla Leonardo da Vinci, Kodeks Hammu- rabiego i Wenus z Milo, dlatego pamiętajcie o zdobyciu mapki kompleksu.

A potem? Skoro piszemy o pomyśle na Paryż w 2 dni, zapewne trzeba skierować się na jedno z trzech lotnisk stolicy Fran- cji, przy czym podróż na odległe Beauvais zajmie nam ponad godzinę autobusem. Bon voyage!

YOU CAN’T TAKE IT ALL IN WITH A SINGLE SWEEP OF THE EYES OR A SHORT STROLL. BUT IT’S NOT SO BIG AT ALL. IN FACT, FEWER PEOPLE LIVE WITHIN ITS ADMINISTRATIVE BOUNDA- RIES THAN IN THE SILESIAN AGGLOMERATION. THE ORBIT- AL HIGHWAY DEFINES AN AREA WITH A POPULATION OF

2 MILLION PEOPLE. IF YOU PLAN WELL, YOU CAN DO THE

‘MUST-SEES’ OF THE FRENCH CAPITAL IN TWO DAYS.

To get around Paris, you can use trams (three lines), buses (double-digit numbers within the city, and triple-digit numbers in the suburbs), as well as the RER (in the suburbs), and the metro which has several

lines designated with different colours.

The metro doesn’t run around the clock (there’s a break from 1:20 am – 5:30 am), but it’s the best way to get around par- ticularly if you’re doing an intensive tour of the city.

Day 1

All the major tourist attractions in the French capital are in its centre, which stra- ddles the River Seine and Île de la Cité is where our journey begins. Shaped like a ship, this long island is the scene of the ci- ty’s first settlement. The area was first inhabited by the Parisii tribe, then the Romans, and later on became the capi- tal of the Merovingian Dynasty. With the river straddling it, Île de la Cité is where you’ll find the absolute highlights of the city – the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, with its stunning interior and phenomenal exte- rior dating back to the thirteenth century, or the rebuilt Conciergerie, the charming two-storey Gothic Sainte- Chapelle or the medieval streets of Paris. Every few min- utes you’ll see tourist restaurant-boats

whisking up and down the Seine. Many pass under the famous Pont Neuf (New Bridge) or the Passerelle des Arts (Artists’

Footbridge) which offers the best view of this part of the city.

It’s best to start your tour on the Île de la Cité, because here, savouring Paris for breakfast, you can decide and plan where we to go. The choice is enormous, but let’s walk along the southern bank, through the Latin Quarter, which is a lot more densely built-up, compact, with more narrow streets than the northern section.

If you turn to the West, you can visit (if architecture’s your thing) the Gothic Saint- Germain-des-Prés church, which for a long time was actually outside the city limits. A much more peaceful and lazy walk would be along the river bank with stops at the French Institute and the Musée d' Orsay – probably the most famous museum in Paris, apart from, of course, the Louvre, located on the other side of the Seine. It’s amazing that the building of the Musée d' Orsay was actually the city’s main railway station, in the past. The way that they city

lies, it almost forces you to look west to where the Eiffel Tower looms high above the city. Before you see it up close, it’s worth taking a look at the Invalides hos- pital on the way. This building houses the most spectacular dome in Paris. It gives off a stunning golden glow and showcases the largest hospital complex in Paris. To- day, tourists come here to pay tribute to France’s military power (Army Museum) and the tomb of the most famous French- man (Napoleon’s burial place). From here, the Eiffel Tower’s just a stone's throw away.

The Eiffel Tower, in our opinion, is much more impressive when viewed from a dis-

tance. When you’re standing right under it, it’s difficult to even take it in with your eyes, let alone your camera’s viewfinder.

In the middle of the day, during peak sea- son, there are gigantic queues between the tower’s four steel legs to get to the top (lift or stairs). It’s worth splurging to view the stunning panorama of the city from the top – provided the weather is fine and there’s no smog. Actually, we think the best view of the tower is actually from

the other side of the river, from the top of the Trocadero Gardens at Chaillot Palace.

From there, again we can take the metro and at the end of the day either visit La Défense (west), or in the direction of the Louvre. In either case, we’ll pass the Arc de Triomphe along the way. Here you’ll have no trouble climbing up to the rooftop viewing-platform. You’re definitely going to get stunning photos of the city’s pano- rama, particularly after dusk. Photos tak- en, we suggest now a long evening stroll down the Champs Elysees, to the Place de la Concorde, and then through the Tuiler- ies Gardens, until they close, and through to the Louvre. Nowhere in Paris will you get better night photos than in front of the

glass pyramid in the museum’s courtyard.

Day 2

We need to make it clear if that you only have two days in Paris and you want to vis- it the Louvre, then you’re going to have to compromise (the same as wanting to tour the British Museum if you’ve only got 48 hours in London). So you don’t leave with

any major regrets, you need to spend here at least half a day. But what can you do to still see more of the city? There is a way:

you need to try and get up very early and get yourself to one of Paris’ so-called ro- mantic districts – those associated with ar- tistic bohemia and many world-renowned names – Montparnasse, Montmartre and Le Marais. It’s probably best to opt for a two-hour walk in the famous Montmartre, because you’ll get an amazing view of the sunrise and watch Paris waking up from the steps of the Sacré-Coeur that sits at its peak. It’s seven o'clock in the morning, so let’s make our way towards the Louvre where we can sit down and enjoy a coffee and a baguette or jam on toast.

Le Marais, in turn, is a district for those loving peace and serenity.

It's easy to get to it heading east from around the Centre Pompidou (the outside of this building really makes a lasting impression) and lose yourself in an area where life, even in the midst of high sea- son, moves at its own leisurely pace. Here we can recommend vis- iting the City Museum. For those who like to sleep in ... on Saturday and Sunday mornings we suggest you go to one of Paris’ outer dis- tricts. There, you can enjoy the traditional markets and try local organic products and feast your eyes and tastebuds on the dozens of cheeses available. There’s one, for example, in Montrouge, near Montparnasse.

Let's go back to the Louvre. The main entrance to the museum is through the glass pyramid we saw at the end of our first day in Paris. The Louvre’s collections are held in seven sections. With half a day to roam, you can see at least the most important works, such as Nike of Samothrace, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Code of Hammurabi and the Venus de Milo, so remember to get a map of the com- plex before you start.

And then what next? Well, if we’re only in Paris for 2 days, it’s probably time to head to one of the city’s three airports. The bus trip to Beauvais will take us over an hour.
