S e i t den Anfängen der Medizin ging das Bestreben der H eilkünstler und Ärzte dahin, in der Beschauung des Urins ein Hilfsm ittel für die Diagnose und Prognose der K rankheiten zu gewinnen. Bei den griechischen Ärzten des Altertums, als deren hervorragende V ertreter H ippokrates, geb. 460 v. Chr., und Galenos, geh. 130 v. Chr., zu gelten haben, w ar die H arn
beschauung ebenso w ichtig wie die ändern diagnostischen Hilfs
mittel jener Zeit, als da sind, Lage und Aussehen des Kranken, Atmung, Beschaffenheit des Auswurfs und andere. Es nahm bei ihnen die Harnbeschauung noch nicht jene bevorzugte Stellung gegenüber den ändern diagnostischen Hilfsm itteln ein, wie es später bei den Ärzten des M ittelalters bis ins 18. J a h r hundert der Fall war, wo das Uringlas, dessen Form sich merkwürdigerweise bis in die moderne Zeit erhalten hat, das A ttribu t des Arztes war. So finden sich viele Handschriften
m iniaturen des M ittelalters und Kupferstiche und Holzschnitte späterer Zeit, die den Arzt bei der Urinbeschauung darstellen ')■
Bei den Lateinern, die ja überhaupt wenig in der Medizin des Altertums geleistet haben, w ar die Kenntnis des Urins noch sehr gering, und infolgedessen spielte auch die Harnbeschauung keine große Rolle. Im Zeitalter des Celsus, im 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr., wurde der Urin als Heilm ittel bei verschiedenen K rank
heiten angegeben.
Die Araber haben als Übersetzer der griechischen L iteratu r wiel zur E rhaltung und V erbreitung der griechischen W issen
schaften und besonders auch der Medizin beigetragen. Doch würde es ein U nrecht sein, wenn man die Araber lediglich als Übersetzer der Griechen hinstellen wollte. Besonders zur Zeit

—der Blüte des Islams im 9., 10. und 11. Jah rh un dert gab es arabische Ärzte, die gestützt auf die Medizin der Griechen ihre Kenntnisse und Erfahrungen in eigenen Schriften niedergelegt haben. Zu diesen gehört auch Isaac Judaeus, dessen Buch vom H arne Gegenstand dieser Abhandlung ist.
Überblick über die Harnliteratur vor Isaac Judaeus.
Hippokrates spricht an verschiedenen Stellen seiner W erke über den Urin, aber eine Monographie hat er nicht darüber geschrieben. Von Ärzten der nachfolgenden Zeiten wird ihm das zum Vorwurf gemacht. So sagt noch Aktuarios, der im 13. Jahrh un dert lebte und eine Abhandlung über den Urin schrieb:
„Sapientissimus Hippocrates, cum pauca quaedam sparsim de urinis dixisset, imperfectam tractationem reliquit“ 1). Ähnlich verhält es sich auch m it Galenos. Dem Galenos wird zwar ine Schrift über den H arn zugeschrieben, und er selbst bekennt sich auch als Verfasser einer solchen in seiner Schrift „In Hippocratis de humoribus librum Commentarii2), wo er sagt:
„Age vero, quid de urinarum colore dicemus, nisi unum ego de urinis librum conscripsissem, certe multa de eis mihi essent hoc loco afferenda“. Doch haben immer Zweifel an der E chtheit einer unter Galenos Namen überlieferten H arnschrift bestanden, und auch K ü h n 2) setzt in seiner Gesamtausgabe der Galenischen W erke über die Urinabhandlung die Ü berschrift: „Galeno ad- scriptus liber de urinis“. Und in der T at h a t B ussem akerd) in seinem Aufsatz über Magnos von Emesa und dessen Buch vom Harne klar bewiesen, daß die dem Galenus zugeschriebene H arn
schrift zum größten Teil die Schrift des Magnos von Emesa ist und daß der Rest von unbekannten Verfassern herrührt. Dieser Ansicht Bussemakers schließt sich auch B loch4) an. Ebern

scheinen N euburger1) und Ilb e rg 2) dem Galenus keine Schrift über den Harn zuzusprechen, denn keiner von beiden erw ähnt bei der Aufzählung der Galenischen W erke eine Schrift über den Urin. Demnach scheint es keinem Zweifel mehr zu unter
liegen, daß die dem Galenos zugeschriebene H arnschrift ein W erk des
Magnos von Emesa (heute Höms)
ist. Bussemaker beweist in dem oben erwähnten Aufsatz auch, daß Magnos von Emesa wahrscheinlich nicht identisch ist mit dem Magnos von Antiochia, einem Zeitgenossen des Oribasios, sondern daß er wahrscheinlich der Lehrer des Theophilos ge
wesen ist und um die Wende des 5. und 6. Jahrhunderts n. Chr.
gelebt hat. Das W erk des Magnos von Emesa ist auch dem Theophilos bekannt gewesen, denn er erw ähnt dasselbe in der Vorrede seiner eigenen H arnschrift, die als zweite und letzte Abhandlung in der Zeit vor Isaac Judaeus anzuführen wäre.
Theophilos
mit dem Beinamen Protospatharios (Führer der Lanzenträger) lebte im Anfang des 7. Jahrhunderts am Hofe des Kaisers Heraklios in Bycanz. Außer anderen weniger bekannten W erken verfaßte er eine Schrift über den Harn, die bei seinen Zeit
genossen und im M ittelalter in hohem Ansehen stand. Die Schrift ist in griechischer Sprache geschrieben; eine lateinische Übersetzung, wahrscheinlich eine der ältesten und von Con- stantinus Africanus herrührend, ist in der „A rticella“ 3), erschienen.
Der von mir gebrauchte lateinische Text ist von Ferdinand M orellus4) übersetzt. Theophilos schickt seinem W erke eine Einleitung voraus, in welcher er dem Hippokrates und dem Galenos den Vorwurf nicht ersparen kann, daß sie eine solche lückenhafte und unvollständige Lehre vom Urin hinterlassen

—hätten. E r sag t: „Hi profecto viri clari et laude digni sunt, quod primi aliquid ad vitam utile invenire studuerint, nemo tarnen illorum absolutam ac perfectam doctrinam ea de re tradidit.
Nam cum Hippocrates de urinis exponere instituisset, alias in scriptorum alia parte sparsim genera, species et differentias urinarum inseruit et dignoscendi et praenoscendi rationem ex ipsis, in partium affectibus praeter naturam futuris, tarn in sanis corporibus, quam in acutis etiam morbis, inchoatam et mancam disciplinam reliquit. Eodem etiam modo Galenus post eum in disputatione de crisibus, ubi composuisset et docuisset valde multa, indefinita et obscura reliquit, in generibus, formis et differentiis“. Nach den weiteren Äußerungen des Theopbilos zu schließen, scheint auch die H arnschrift des Magnos von Emesa seinen Beifall nicht gefunden zu haben. „Consentaneae autem, so fährt er fort, ipsis Magnus sequenti aevo, medicus quidem professione, sed re ipsa imperitus, suscepit etiam de eadem arte tractare et divisionem orsus, differentias ac species conscribere et signa' ad dignoscendum, quae ex urinis fierent au t impenderent atque usu venire possent, plerisque praetermissis, documentum etiam liquit imperfectum, u t m ulta a medicis, qui postea orti sunt requirantur, et cum solutionem repperire nequeant, aliam quaerere doctrinam coguntur, potius quam inaniter ex iis, quae didicerint, observate et coniectura assequi res et notiones obscuras ex iis ipsis quae apparent“, dann beginnt er mit der eigentlichen Abhandlung. Die Schrift ist nicht sehr umfangreich, läßt aber an K larheit und Deutlichkeit nicht viel zu wünschen übrig.
Zuerst wendet sie sich zur B etrachtung des normalen Urins und seiner Eigenschaften, um dann zur Pathologie überzugehen.
Als nächste Abhandlung über den Harn wäre dann die Schrift des
Isaac Judaeus

J a h r 830 n. Chr. in Ägypten, wo er auch zuerst als Augenarzt praktizierte. Später wanderte er aus nach M auretanien und ließ sich in el Ceirowan nieder, wo er den U nterricht des Isaak ben Amram genoß. Als dann Abu, Muhammed Obeidallah el Mahdi die Regierung der Aglabiten gestürzt und sich der Regierung Afrikas bemächtigt hatte, tra t Isaac als A rzt in seine Dienste.
E r soll über 100 Ja h re alt geworden und im J a h re 932 n. Chr.
gestorben seih. Seine wichtigsten W erke sin d 1):

7. W ird ihm auch das V iaticum 2) zugeschrieben aber mit Unrecht.
Außerdem werden dem Isaac Judaeus noch einige kleinere Schriften zugeschrieben, die aber wenig Bedeutung haben. Die Schriften des Isaak sind in arabischer Sprache geschrieben und standen im M ittelalter in hohem Ansehen. Sie sind fast alle in die lateinische und hebräische Sprache übersetzt worden.
Das H auptverdienst an der Übersetzung der Schriften Isaaks in die lateinische Sprache hat Constantinus Africanus, der Ende des 11. Jahrhunderts lebte. E r w ar Arzt, machte weite Reisen in den Orient und eignete sich eine vorzügliche Kenntnis der orientalischen Sprachen an. Kurze Zeit w ar er auch als Lehrer

—an der Ärzteschule in Salerno tätig. Später tra t er als Mönch in das Kloster Monte Cassino ein, wo er sich hauptsächlich der Ü bersetzungstätigkeit widmete und unter anderen auch fast sämtliche W erke des Isaak ins Lateinische übertrug.

Auf der Bibi. nat. zu Paris befindet sich eine größere An
zahl Handschriften des Liber de Urinis Isaac Judaei.
Die Einleitung, welche dem W erke des Isaak über den Harn
vorangeht, ist von Constantinus Africanus geschrieben und lautet
in deutscher Übersetzung wie folgt: „Unter den lateinischen
Büchern habe ich keinen Autor gefunden, der eine sichere und
authentische Kenntnis vom Urin gegeben hätte. Deshalb habe
ich mich an die arabische Sprache gewandt, in der ich ein Buch
gefunden habe, das in dieser Hinsicht bewundernswert ist und
welches ich, Constantinus von Afrika, Mönch zu Monte Cassino,
ins Lateinische zu übertragen beschlossen habe, um durch die
A rbeit einen Geisteslohn zu erwerben und denjenigen den Weg
zu verbreitern, die in die Kenntnis des Urins eingeführt werden
sollen. Dieses Buch stellt eine Sammlung und einen Auszug der
alten A utoren1) dar; durch dieses Buch sind die Türen zur Kenntnis des Urins geöffnet und auch der Einteilungen und Zeichen desselben. Verfaßt aber hat dasselbe des Salomon Adoptiv
sohn Isaak in arabischer Sprache und hat es in 10 Kapitel ein
geteilt.“
Dann beginnt die eigentliche Abhandlung des Isaak. In dem vorliegenden Abdruck der H arnschrift des Isaak ist der lateinische Text der „Opera omnia Isaaci“ zugrunde gelegt unter Auflösung der m ittelalterlichen Abkürzungen und unter Anwen
dung der jetz t üblichen lateinischen Orthographie. Zum Vergleich und zur Prüfung des Textes wurde die sorgfältig um 1300 ge
schriebene Leipziger Handschrift Nr. 1154 herangezogen, und es zeigte sich, daß der Text aus den „Opera omnia“ fast w ortgetreu m it dieser Leipziger H andschrift übereinstimmt. Nur am Schluß der Abhandlung bringt die Leipziger Handschrift 1154 noch einen kurzen Abschnitt, der in den „Opera omnia“ nicht mehr enthalten ist. Ferner stellte sich beim Vergleich der H arnschrift aus den „Opera omnia“ m it der Leipziger H andschrift 1154 heraus, daß in der Leipziger Handschrift zwei Quaternionen, und zwar B latt 218—225 und B la tt 226—233, beim Einbinden m it
einander verwechselt sind. Zur sicheren Feststellung dieses Ver- f sehens wurde auch noch die E rfu rter Handschrift Cod. Ampi,
fol. 286 m it herangezogen, die den Irrtum bestätigte.
